an obsession with truth (or the facts, at least)
As friendly professor Peter Schickele once said... "Truth is truth. You can't have opinions about truth." I'm accused of having obsessions no one else cares about. (I'm willing to confess to an excessive fondness for gerbils.) But I do care about the truth, and make no apologies for it. Part of the reason for this obsession is that, as an under-employed technical... more »

an apology
My remark that "no one in this group knows what they're talking about" (and its implications) was uncalled-for. I sincerely apologize. "'We already know the answers -- we just haven't asked the right questions." -- Edwin Land

I've got $25 that says no one in this group knows what they're talking about.
A few years back, Newnes published a terrible book, "Electronics Explained -- The New Systems Approach to Learning Electronics". I reviewed it for Amazon, grudgingly giving it two stars (when it deserved zero), simply because someone knowing nothing whatever about electronics might get a few useful things from... more »

Do Studio Monitors Need to be Broken In?
I guess this is another debate that can go on forever...

$1,323 worth of snake oil?
... ... ... Oh. My. God. It's a weird jumble of bits of real science glued together in strange ways, something like "My dog barked, and the acoustic interaction with the engine computer in my car two blocks away caused a misfire on cylinder 3." Mabye, but most likely not, unless the dog is REALLY LOUD and there's a serious... more »

Is an Electrometer required to properly measure Polarization Voltage?
Some people are saying any multimeter is too high a load for the typical DC to DC converters you see in the Schoeps type mic circuits.

$1,323 worth of snake oil?
Has anyone ever heard of this thing? I'm pretty sure its primary function is to separate buyers from their money, but opinions are welcome: [link] "The Blackbody is unlike any other filter or conditioner. All power filters and conditioners address noise found on wires, but there’s another type of noise altogether. Until now, this inconspicuous type of noise has been largely unacknowledged. It is caused by constant electromagnetic interaction between gear and immediately surrounding objects: stands, racks, nearby signal wiring, enclosures, and other objects containing circuitry or not. This type of radiated noise is not confined to wires. The Blackbody works by absorbing these reflections, effectively solving the problem. Being the only conditioner of its kind, it offers a level of performance previously unattainable."... more »

Ribbon Mic Suggestions?
Greetings all, I have some money left in my production budget this year and thought about adding a new mic or two to our collection. Currently, we don't have any ribbon mics...and I've often thought it would be a nice addition, if I can find one we can afford. Is there anything out there between say $500---$1,000 that might be worth considering? Potential uses would likely include trumpet, trombone, etc. (I had a trombone player in our studio a while back & he let me use his personal ribbon mic....and while it sounded fabulous, it also costs around $3,500....not likely something we can afford at this time!)... more »
