I got an adapter labeled "DVI Analog to VGA adapter".
It also says "DVI-Analog M to VGA HD15F.

Anyway, it is missing two of the four pins around the
wide tongue that normally, as I understand it, comprise
the analog signal. Of course it does not work. I was
just curious as to what purpose for which this item
was manufactured.

Hmmm... VGA is an HD15*E* (though perhaps the F is intended
not to indicate the body size but, rather, the gender of
the connector?)

The pins surrounding the "tongue" are normally R G B
analog video components and HSync (VSync is on one of
the "little pins" in the large group of pins nearby).

So, presumably, the two pins that you have adjacent
to the tongue (ground) are HSync and one of the color
components. Together with VSync (elsewhere), this gives
you a monochrome display (I'd wager green being the
"color" still present -- some devices sync on green).

Of course, this assumes those pins weren't *broken* off...

(The DVI connector pinout has to be available online,
somewhere. Have a look to see which signals are actually
missing)
