TDK - Music CDR Media

Did TDK change their specs on Music CDR media?

I have a stand-alone CD recorder with a few years on it. As long as I
have the correct media it's incredibly reliable. The Philips CDR880
only works with "music" recordable media. Now I can't find media for
it.

TDK Music CDRs (white) were great until Spring/Summer 2004. Retail
stores started carrying spindles with a newer TDK packaging. I think
the discs inside are slightly different too. The newer "music cdr"
disks simply don't work in the CDR8800.

Help? Are there other brands that anyone knows about?

You wanna look for the "for
digital audio recorders." on the label. I've used TDK's, Memorex and
Durabrand with very very few "coasters" in my RCA standalone.

The REASON you have to use these in your standalone CD burner is:
When the electronics companies started to make these things, The RIAA
decided they were going to lose money because people would "pirate"
cd's.
So... they somehow convinced the industry to put a code on the cdr's
that
you use in the standalone unit. Your standalone looks for the code
when it
"mounts" or "boots" or whatever when it gets ready to record the disc.
No
code, no recordee. The ones with the code have a "tax" associated with
them
that goes to the record companies somehow.

Or that's what I was told by a dude that sells cdr's in the thousands.

By the way, I remember years ago something about a "tax" of the same
sort on
blank tape (cassettes and video) for the same reason.

I think they use to be Taiyo Yuden CDs.....now they are a cheaper brand.If
they say made in Japan they are probably Taiyo Yudens.

TDK don't make CD-Rs. those that do make CVD-Rs make what the mass market
demands. From time to time older spec stuff falls off the end of the
product life-cycle, and TDK's (etc) product is no longer the same as it was.
It may come from a completely different manufacturer.

It's deceptive marketing, only two letters make the difference. TG.

The manufacturer number ends with 12, 20, or 30 depending how many
disks are in the pack. If there is a TG, or G tacked on to the end of
the part number than the TDK music disks probably won't work in older
music burners.

Spindle changes:
Spindle changed from grey to black.
Cover changed from hard plastic to soft.
The spindle spacer went from foam to plastic.

The newer cds don't have the OPC code. This code is mentioned in the
TDK faq, dated 4/20/2004. Just 4 months ago. The Philips cdr8800
says "OPC Fail". This BURNS me up. No pun intended.
