I had a pair of the M177's when they first came out.
I was attracted to them because the self noise was spec'd
really low for the price. When I got them home I found them
to be entirely lacking in the top end. When I compensated
with treble boost, it made the noise as audible as some $100
Marshals that I had. I had tried the CAD's because I was
unhappy with the noise coming from the Marshals. The CAD's
sat on a shelf for a few years and I put them on ebay and
got a fair price for them.
I've since invested more money in my mics, and have forgotten
what what noise problems are (home recording space notwithstanding!).
As an aside, I've purchased three things from ZZounds, and
I'm convinced that they are a clearing house for returns from
other vendors. I bought a battery powered guitar amp from
them and the lead-acid battery wouldn't hold a charge. I ended
up just buying another battery. The next was a drum machine
with a liquid crystal display. The contrast on the display
was poor. The background was too close in color to the content.
There was no adjustment for this on the unit. They have a
good return policy, but you pay to ship back. I think they
just have a merry-go-round of slightly defective items that
eventually stick in some customer's possession due to ignorance
or laziness.
I've been buying from Sweetwater. I order a set of guitar
strings and my sales rep gives me a call to make sure it's
what I wanted before they ship.
