I've been looking for a parametric EQ, and the Rane PE-17 was suggested
to me by a friend. I've read that they are somewhat unreliable,
especially the bypass switches. To anyone that owns this EQ, would you
recommend it?

Thanks,

I just bought one for only $90! All the others I've seen go for $400-500.

What do you expect at this kind of price point? You're not getting a
GML or a Sontec for that kind of money.

If the switches get flaky, squirt a little Cramolin into them and clean
them up. Same for the 1/4 phone jacks.

I have a number of the earlier PE15 and SE15 Rane parametric equalizers in
active use in various applications. Some or all were built more than a
decade ago. All seem to be completely functional. I think I may have
replaced a 7815 regulator chip in one of them a few years back, and that has
been it.

I've purchased a fair amount of Rane equipment on eBay. I've put some of it
through thorough bench testing. I have found that unless it was obviously
abused or modified, it worked as if it were new.

Switches, like all components, may have production lots that are defective.
IME Rane very actively supports their products.

In the current context Rane equipment is most definitely *not* the
lowest-priced equipment around. It is at least in the upper-middle price
range. Comments like "what do you expect for the price" seem to be very
strange.

Just because we now have companies selling bletcherous crap that is an
order of magnitude worse than the Rane gear doesn't make the Rane stuff
any better.

It's fine for with it is... it's decent entry-level PA gear. Use it and
enjoy but don't expect it to work, last, or feel like high end studio gear.

On balance there is a fair amount of high end studio gear that can't hold a
candle, performance wise, to what we currently think is pretty humble stuff.

I agree that Rane is not high end studio gear.

Calling Rane equipment "entry-level PA gear" suggests a lack of experience
with products branded with well-known names like Bogen and Ramsa. ;-)

I figure that if it doesn't work out for me, I could make a couple
hundred dollars selling it on ebay. I'm at the beginning stages of
buying equipment for my home studio. You atleast have to agree that I
got a great deal.
