Hi,

I have the edirol r-09 stereo digital recorder, the input is a
stereo mini plug.. I use a cord direct to a guitar that has a mono
1/4 jack on one end and a stereo mini plug on the other end. When I
change the pickup selector to bridge pickup, no signal is transmitted
to the edirol. If I use an amp it works fine. Do I have the right
cord?

Also, is there a way to use a y cord with a stereo mini input and
get one instrument on the right channel and another instrument on the
left of the edirol? I figure I would ask before buying one.

Thanks,

itchy

The technically correct answer would depend on knowledge of
exactly how the guitar output connector is wired, and how your
cable are wired. You didn't identify either one, and it isn't clear
whether we could determine the wiring even if we knew the
identity of the mystery pieces of your puzzle.

Since we can't base an answer on technical facts, the next best
solution might be to take your kit to some shop that sells cables
and try them until you find some combination that works for you.

Look up "Audio Insert cables" on google and look for some wiring
schemas...I think you may want a balanced TRS 1/4" to two either two
rca or two 1/8 inch mono (s'not clear). in either case it would be the
same wiring schema as for an insert cable.

Your guitar may be wired in stereo. If it is, then the output of one
of your pickups is probably being sent to ground via the ring
connection to the mono (only tip and sleeve) 1/4" jack. Try using a
cord that has a stereo (tip, ring, and sleeve) plug on the 1/4" side
as well. If you want both guitar pickups to come thru on the same
channel, you may have to add a proper stereo-to-mono adapter on the
1/4" side, too.

This all depends on how the stereo mini is wired.
If the tip of the guitar plug is wired to the tip of the mini plug and
the sleeve of the guitar plug is wired to the Sleeve of the mini plug,
you will be able to record on the left channel.

If the tip and ring of the mini plug are wired together and the guitar
plug tip is wired to tip/ring and the sleeves are connected, you will
get the same signal from the guitar on both channels.

If you want to record two devices at the same time, you will need a
mini plug wired so that the tip of the mini is wired to the tip on the
plug for one instrument and the ring of the mini is wired to the tip
of the cable to the other instrument. the sleeves are common.
