Cleaning out my storage locker, I came upon this MXL V67G which I
bought in 2001 in NYC.
I used the mic for several years and then put it away for a move out
west.
It's been in it's box, inside a plastic bag with desiccant ever
since.
When I plugged it in, it made all kinds of noise.
The capsule looks fine, not dirty or collapsed.
I recorded a .wav file and sent it to MXL.
They agree the mic has a problem but won't do anything with it because
it's long out of warranty.
I hate to throw it out.
I remember some years ago that Scott Dorsey ( Hi Scott!) had a mod for
MXL mics which involved a new pc board and better parts.
Scott, I know you're still around here and have seen partial articles
on this mod on the 'net.
Do you still have the pc boards and component list available?
I'd appreciate if you can help me out with this.

Sometimes the ground connection between the body and the grill gets
loose and will cause noise. Before modifying it, I'd remove the shell
and check for an oxidized connection somewhere. Scott's mod, while
great, is not a good idea for this mic.

It sounds as if you have a basic problem to solve with this mic before
you consider modifications.

Is it hissy, or is it rumbly? Excess noise on condenser mikes is usually
caused by something being contaminated or dirty. Could be something on the
PC board, could be something on or in the capsule.

I still have the boards available but before you do anything disconnect the
capsule from the PC board and see what happens. If the noise goes away, the
problem is the capsule and you can try cleaning the outside of the capsule.
If the noise does not go away, you can try hitting the PC board with flux
remover and if THAT doesn't work you can try replacing the board with my
retrofit.

The retrofit board really cleans up the top end and the bottom end and
makes for cleaner sound, but it won't do anything if you have mold growing
inside the capsule.

There are several solutions we can offer you. I apologize if the
person you spoke to did not relay them to you.
Just contact me through our office, I am on extension 172.
Even after a mics warranty has expired we offer support on our
products.

And after 24 hours on phantom power? - or a weeek even?

Peter: I left it plugged in and on for over a week and it just got
more noisy.
It's a combination of sounds.
It still passes audio, does not fail the "breath test" and was working
fine before it was put away.
There is no visible capsule contamination and it appears undamaged.
I'll contact MXL as suggested.

I'll check with MXL again to see if there's a reasonable solution on
their side.
The email contact suggested they could send me a new one for $60 plus
shipping.
I'd rather have mine repaired if possible.

OK thanks, I was wondering because of the quite likely way remote
possibility that the desiccant in a perhaps not totally sealed package had
gathered humidity rather than prevented it.

Thanks Harvey!

It was on your recommendation that I purchased this mic in the first
place.
I was very happy with it and as I said, I used it almost daily until
my move west.
A lot of stuff went into storage, this mc was one of them.
I'll check the mic as you recommended and also will contact MXL again
as suggested, this time by phone.

You may have a cap that has gone bad. At this price point they aren't
really worth putting
much effort into fixing, esp if MXL will help you with a discount on a
replacement.

I'll be talking to the MXL guy after Turkey Day and Black Friday is
over in the US.
Seems a pity to trash something that I paid $200 for, which was street
when they first hit the market early this century.
I know they sell for less than a hundred now.
If MXL can't come up with something reasonable, I'll either do Scott's
mod or sell it, letting prospective buyers know that something is
wrong.

Have you tried it with other phantom power sources?

I had some noise problems with MXL mics and found that they were noisy with
some phantom power sources, and not noisy with others. All of the sources
were within spec, and MXL did address the situation in warranty.

Yes, I've now tried it with three different professional preamps with
phantom and the noise problem remains consistent.
I'll be calling MXL about it Monday.
