A friend of mine recently got a hold of a "ghost box". I can't really
figure out what it does. It seems to be a modified AM radio. Instead of
moving through the bands by tuning by hand, this has a small motor that does
it automatically. This is digital, so while the radio is tuned rapidly it
sounds like a woodpecker or machine gun, not the constant signal of the
analog radios as the dial was changed. It is claimed that at certain spots
as the digital radio is tuned, there will be words spoken supposedly from
spirits. My friend claims he's picked up short messages and has actual
recordings that seem to indicate it, but I am still skeptical. What's going
on, could this thing be real or not? Could people be imagining what they
want to hear?

It's nonsense. See "Caverat's" opinion on this forum:

I routinely hear voices, and I don't need any fancy radio. The voices come
and go, in concert with my Haldol dosage.

Troll. Nobody could be that naturally stupid.

I dunno. For my last camping trip I picked up a nice little digitally-tuned
portable FM radio at the nearby RS store. I surfed the web when I had a
question about it, and mostly found step-by-step instructions about how to
turn it into a "ghost box". Like vinyl, there seem to be a lot of newbies
into ghost boxes.

There's a market for that. You take the output and it sounds just like
some of those Stockhausen pieces....

Mr. McCarty is a diagnosed schizophrenic, who has been under the care of
the Australian mental health system. In his posts, he frequently writes
about his own life in the guise of a forgery. He appears to have detailed
knowledge of the medications used to treat him, Risperdal and Halperidol.
These are dangerous, second line drugs used when first line drugs, such as
lithium, have failed. These drugs are also indicated for manic depressive
disorder with suicidal tendencies

Mr. McCarty's slide towards mental illness may have begun in childhood,
when, in a tragic accident, he lost the use of his sex organs.

Mr. McCarty blames me for his troubles with the law in Australia; hence the
forgeries. I say to Mr. McCarty, each man is in charge of his own life. If
you do the crime, be prepared to do the time.

Of course they could. Look how many people in the USA (for instance)
literally believe the bible !
