Anybody see the "Hobbit" movie? The title was bloviated, can't remember it
exactly. I watched about 20 minutes. Why, oh why, does Ian McKellen debase
himself with this garbage?

I have to admit, it's been ages since I read the book. I was probably around
12. My memory is of a more coherent story than the disjointed flummery of the
movie. Of course, at the time, I was only reading at a level of, say,
Scottie-plus-2-years.

To my adult sensibility, the movie made about as much sense as a Krazy Krooger
audio post. The dialog was difficult to follow because of the muttering and
the exaggerated reginoal (British) accents. The exposition was labored and the
comedy fell flat.

I'll bet Scottie thought it was wondrous and magickal.

Some of the weird bits, like the dwarves' song early on, were in the
book but I'd forgotten about them. There were no bunny-sleds, however,
and the goblin mines didn't remind me of Super Mario Brothers nor the
rock giants of Rock'em Sock'em Robots.

On the plus side, the Bilbo/Gollum scene was as good as could be hoped.
The Barry Humphries vocal appearance was a surprise.

Sounds like you watched the whole thing.

Who'd he play -- Gollum's mama?

Yep. The "hifi" version with 48 frames per second and 3D.

Oops. Better check that frame rate or Trots will reappear to taunt me.
