Apology (?) to Ken Drescher

My original interest in Ken's ad for the Tannoy System 10 Speakers was
piqued by the mention of "STEREOPHILE CLASS B" in the subject. I did recall
a mention of one of the Tannoy models in an earlier issue of STEREOPHILE (I
have been a reader since the first issue and a subscriber for over 25 years)
and thought at the time that they may be worth considering except for their
relatively high price. When I saw that the link to the recomendation in
Ken's ad was for the version II but there was no mention of a version II in
Ken's ad, I thought that Ken may have merely neglected to include the
version II designation or that there was in fact only one version ( I
dismissed the possibility that the link was furnished only to give more
detail about the speakers as he seemed to be relying on the Stereophile
recommendation to enhance the desireability of the speakers and the link
only led to the recommendation - not a description). I did try to find the
actual review in one of my back issues of Stereophile and did see that the
DMT II's were included in the recommended components issue of October '97
but the actual review was from Stereophile's sister magazine "Stereophile
Guide to Home Theater" so I couldn't read the full review to see if there
was a mention of the earlier version. As my experience with Stereopile
suggests that version upgrades require a new evaluation of a reviewed and
recommended component, I felt that it was appropriate to investigate this
discrepancy.

I don't know whether Ken received the above reply. I then did a google
search to satisfy my own curiosity and found a link which clearly indicates
that there were two distinct "versions" of the speaker. I emailed Ken again

The description of the Tannoys still contained the suspicious links so I
posted the following reply which appears to be the one that upset Ken and a
few other group members:

If you will notice, I made no malicious statements in any of my emails or
posts. The above post merely attempts to clarify the descrepancy between
the speakers for sale and the links which, to me, is significant. The last
sentence of my preceding reply:

may be interpreted as a "slam" but based on an excerpt from Ken's reply:
"Both the review and the Recommended list clearly indicate the System 10 II
which is like the System
10. I can't even find a distinction between the two systems on the Tannoy

I have to conclude that because Ken feels that the DMT 10 is "LIKE" the DMT
10 II and he can't find a distinction on the Tannoy web page, he believes
that any reviews or descriptions of the later version apply to the earlier
version in which case he is confirming the fact that he "does not see a
problem".
As for the actual difference between the two models, I am not stating that
there is a significant difference. I am only suggesting "caution" in
putting much weight in the reviews and recommendation. My experience with
Stereophile is that they do not group all versions of a particular model
under one review because they assume (and usually find) that a significant
design change is involved when a new version is introduced. Yes, it is
possible that a new version may be introduced simply to allow the marketing
people to claim "new and improved", but it is also possible (and more
likely) that the performance of the newer version was improved through
redesign of the driver, the crossover and/or the cabinet. Until it is
verified that the new version is identical in performance to the old
version, it would not be appropriate, in my opinion, to apply a
recommendation for the newer version to the older version.
I do apologize to Ken for any misunderstandings caused by my inability to
receive private emails. I am still not aware of the reson for Ken's emails
bouncing. I did install a new router recently which I thought was
transparent to my email but perhaps not - I will look into it. Perhaps if
Ken's emails to me were not bounced, this issue might have been resolved
without my postings to the group.
I also apologize to the group. Apparently many of you don't see the review
and recommendation descrepancy as a problem and inerpreted my intervention
as an assault on Ken. That was not my intention.
Please note that I made NO personal attacks on ANYONE nor did I "slam"
anyone and I have NO interest in getting into a pissing match with ANYONE.

Great post ! Ken has shown himself to be a good and honest dealer, not the
person BM says he is. Personally, I think you were right to point the
original difference out, but there also seemed to be some miscommunication
(technical) that resulted in the escalation.
Nice way to diffuse it, and in this case, it seems both sides are "right."

McCarty had an early scheme for Internet radio. He claims to have sold
musical performance properties and/or a business plan to Black Entertainment
Television for $9.2M. Subsequently, he left Los Angeles. One unsubstantiated
rumor is that he left to avoid prosecution for a sex crime, presumably by
paying off the victim or family. Once in Australia, he made the acquaintance
of the brother of P.M. John Howard, who introduced him to contacts at ABN
Amro, an investment banking firm. They created a business plan for some kind
of a sound studio, still represented by the website
http://www.coralseastudios.com. After approximately a year, ABN withdrew
from partnership, but left the studio project still solvent. Some time
later, it went bankrupt or nearly so, owing $270,000 to it's employees. At
this point, Australia's entitlement law kicked in, paying the employees
monies owed them, with the exception of codirectors McCarty and Jeff Wexler.
It would appear that McCarty's enterprises failed because he has some kind
of mental imbalance, which exhibits signs of both schizophrenia and
obsessive-compulsive disorder. The impersonations which he makes of me are
a fraction of the numerous identities which he has used in the past, and
continues to use, on occasion, in the present. McCarty may actually believe
he is the person who he impersonates. Many of the identities are of
elaborate construction, taking some six months or more to take shape.
McCarty seems to have a magical belief that use of false identities provides
a shield.
Since his business failure, McCarty has tried to obtain new financing. These
methods characteristically rely on false identities and false business
fronts. His domain registrations are in the names of nonexistent people, and
his websites advertise nonexistent associations and companies, frequently by
theft of trademark. For example, my name, Robert Morein, was used as a
fictitious endorsement on his website http://www.coraseastudios.com. Since
he was caught some three months ago claiming to be a producer for a
syndicated jazz music program, his name has not appeared publicly on any of
his business enterprises.
McCarty is currently attempting to revive his Internet radio scheme,
WorldJAZZ, under the name http://www.worldjazz.com. This webpage currently
consists completely of false associations and endorsements. There is no
"Jersey Jazz Bass Festival", and "Peter Thliveroski" is a modification of
"Peter Thliveros", a sports bass fisherman!
McCarty has certain bizarre beliefs regarding the pricing of used audio
equipment appearing on rec.audio.marketplace. He refers constantly to a book
known as the "Orion Bluebook", which reports surveys of audio dealers for
prices they paid for used equipment, and prices at which sold. Anyone who
advertises on rec.audio.marketplace with prices in excess of the "wholesale
average condition" price is subject to attack by McCarty, who does so with
the vigor of the Red Brigades. Tactics he has employed against victims are
the filing of false crime reports with local police departments alleging
that the seller deals in stolen goods and alleged zoning violations.
Anyone can become a McCarty victim by disagreeing with him in a public
forum. In the past, consequences have been virus attacks, email bomb
attacks, defamatory postings, and chronic impersonation. All this is
contradictory to McCarty's apparent goal of obtaining finance for his
business projects. An intelligent scammer works quietly, while McCarty may
be the best known scammer of all time.
McCarty is 49 years old, and appears to be ill, requiring intermittent
hospital care. He apparently lacks mobility. It is possible that this
contributes to his mental imbalance.

I agree we might have avoided all this if I had received your emails (I didn't)
and you could have received my responses (they all bounced back).
I appreciate your comments below and feel you did have good intentions that
escalated out of control due to miscommunications.
I say we get back to what this group is all about - buying and selling
