Well the TV Guide in this weeks issue gave their own list of great
comedy scenes on tv
well i thought i would give mine.

5) Cheers - Snipe hunt - when Frasier was
sent on a snipe hunt by Sam, Norm and the
gang. Hint - snipes are not real. They didn't
show it but i could picture Frasier bending
over with the cloth bag saying "snipe, snipe
snipe".

4) MTM - the death and funeral of the clown.
I completely agree that this scene as sad as
it was was also a very funny episode and
completely out of character for Mary Richards
but at the same time very believable.

3) 3's Company - the wart episode - this was
an episode that probably could not be made
today but was a perfect case of listening to
part of the conversation. Crissy, Jack and
Janet were in their bathroom and Crissy had
a wart she wanted removed. Well Mr Roper
was in his bathroom and caught the snippet
about wanting to get rid of it and he jumped
to the conclusion of pregnancy and abortion
of course he convinced Mrs Roper and even
dragged her to the bathroom to listen. This
was such a 70s type of humor that today would
be politically incorrect but really had a poignant
humor to it.

2) Alice - a show i loved but i think i might have
been the only one. It was the episode that Vera
believed George Burns was God. There was an
incredible innocent naivete that Vera had and
thats what lead her to believe Burns was really
God. Watching that episode was very funny but
also incredibly poignant.

1) Fawlty Towers - Basil the Rat. This is just
straight slapstick. When Manuel adopted a
Russian Guinea Pig basically a rat and it got
loose in the kitchen and finally ended up in
the health inspector's bisquit box. The rat
btw was called Basil the same name as Mr Fawlty.

If I had to pick the five funniest scenes of all time, I think
they would all be from the Simpsons.
Now before you flame me, keep in mind I have seen every
episode of MASH, the Odd Couple, Honeymooners, and I Love Lucy. I have
also seen most of Cheers, Seinfeld, Mary Tyler Moore, Newhart, and
Happy Days.
And I STILL think the Simpsons is by far the greatest ever.

Actually, according to the last bird book I consulted, a snipe is a brown bird
with a long thin bill. They even had a picture; it looked kind of like a
kiwi.

A few I would throw up for consideration (unranked, but now unforgotten):

Bosom Buddies -- Kip & Henry produce a cable-access TV show to impress a
sponsor, but everything -- EVRYTHING -- goes wrong, including the crew
eating the food for Ruth's cooking segment and Amy kidnapping Penny Marshall
so she can have airtime to do an insipid Mexcian dance.

Newhart -- A strike hits channel 8 as Dick hosts an all-night telethon, and
is stuck with insipid guests like Larry, Darryl and Darryl. Sleep
deprivation causes him to lose his mind temporarily, and the sight of stuffy
Dick cracking up at his own lame jokes is memorable.

Night Court - the gang has to plow through 200 cases in one night. Done
twice IIRC, the first one is nominated here.

The Odd Couple - Felix and Oscar on 'Password', with guests shots by Betty
White and Allen Ludden. Brilliant writing thoughout.

Cheers - "Cheers, the Motion Picture" - the gang makes ahome movie about
life in Boston for Woody's parents; Diane turns into the overblown "Manchild
in Beantown."

Seinfeld - "The Betrayal" - the backwards episode. Stuff good.

And more I just cannot recall right now.

What the hell are you talking about? Snipes are real birds.

Do you think you were the only one who liked the show because a) the
show was on in prime time for so long or b) because it was successfully
sydicated for so long?

As you know, Chris, I've said it a million times in the alt.tv.game-shows,
but this is the first time I'll say this here. Frank Buxton has done
practically everything in show business, from chronicling the history of
old-timey radio to hosting a couple of game shows (and there was also some
cartoon about a bat), but I think he's gotten more attention and accolades
for writing this single "Odd Couple" episode than anything else he's ever
done. When the Great Comedy Episodes are tallied, this one somehow almost
always nears the top echelon.

In no particular order.....

Family Ties - Alex is worried that his relationship with Ellen is in
dangersince he can't relate to her artist friends. So he decides to try out for
the college's dance company, and his dance is "an interpretation of the Stock
Market crash of 1929".

M*A*S*H* "Adam's Ribs" - Any scene from this episode would suffice, but I'll
go with the classic one where Hawkeye throws a fit in the mess hall about the
repetition of food choices every day - "I've eaten a river of liver and an
ocean of fish!". Wonderful detail in t his scene: Radar is on Hawkeye's side
and chanting along with the rest of the 4077th, but the little lad is eating
his food at the same time.

Cheers - Carla beating the crap out of some guy who was trashing the Boston
Bruins. Good follow up scene later on when an actual Boston Bruin escorts the
man out of the bar.

Mad About You - The Alan Brady episode. Another one where every scene coudl be
considered classic. My favorite is the scene in the restaraunt and the
breathless dialogue between Paul and Alan in the "who's chair? - your chair!"
routine.

The Cosby Show - The pilot episode when Cliff demonstrates to Theo the
drawbacks of being "regular people" using monopoly money.

Other non-specific favorites:

Anytime Corey Parker opened his mouth on Flying Blind (the guy would seemingly
speak from commercial break to commercial break without taking a breath).

Any exchange between Michael Boatman and Alan Ruck on Spin City.

Every scene in every episode of SportsNight to date.

That was the pilot?? I don't think so, but I agree it's one of my all
time favorites. Shows where parents make a solid point without scolding
or lecturing are winners with me, since that was/is my own father's sole
method *sigh*.

I'm trying to think of others of this ilk, but am coming up blank. Let's
think of some more?
