*** 15TH ANNUAL RATTY AWARDS ***

This is the final ballot for the 2008-2009 Ratty Awards for the
rec.arts.tv newsgroup, as compiled by Robert Licuria.

There were 32 voters in the nominations round this year, up from 28
last year.

Lost once again led all series in nominations this year, with 11.
However, NBC led all networks in nominations with a total of 31
nominations spread among 10 shows.

Welcome to the party ... or should that be "Welcome to the
Dollhouse"?: The most nominated new series was Dollhouse, with 7
nominations including Best Series on Television. Other new series
making strong showings included True Blood with 6 nominations and
Fringe with 5 nominations.

We'll miss you: The most nominated series to end its run in the
2007-08 season was Battlestar Galactica, with 7 nominations.

On the cusp: Among the shows that came close to nominations without
receiving any this year were Scrubs and Greek. While Dexter and ER
received one nomination each, they each came close to receiving more.

Genre switch: Last year, Pushing Daisies competed in the SF
categories, but this year it is competing in the Comedy categories
because it received more votes for Best Comedy Series than Best SF
Series this year.

Network switch: Friday Night Lights, which was listed as an NBC series
in previous years, switched in the 2008-09 season to airing on
DirecTV's 101 Network first, and then having its episodes broadcast on
NBC later. Therefore, the 101 Network gets credit as the originating
network in the Rattys, which makes it the first direct broadcast
satellite channel to receive a Ratty nomination.

On the other hand, Deal or No Deal aired both on NBC and in
syndication during the 2008-09 season, but with different episodes for
each. Therefore, both NBC and syndication receive credit for the
show's Ratty nominations this year, although those nominations happen
to be in the "Worst" categories.

The following are the rules for this second stage of voting:

* CAMPAIGNING IS ALLOWED. You may encourage people to vote in the
Rattys on other web sites, blogs, mailing lists, etc., or on other
television-related newsgroups, if you do so with good netiquette. In
fact, I am planning to campaign myself. However, please don't post the
ballot anywhere else, except with permission of one of the Ratty
Awards administrators. Just tell people they can find the ballot at
the rec.arts.tv newsgroup (you can provide a URL as a link).

* In the final results posting, I will post the percentages received
by all nominees if and only if we receive ballots from more than 100
voters.

* Anyone reading this posting is eligible to vote, whether or not you
voted in the first round.

* In each category, delete the four nominees you don't want to vote
for, leaving your one single vote in each category.

* You don't have to vote in every category, but please try to vote in
as many categories as you can. If you are skipping a category, please
delete all of the nominees in that category.

* Please try to keep spacing between each category to a minimum. All
we should see is the category title, next line your vote, a space, and
then the next category. This will help keep your ballot short.

* The deadline to submit votes is Thursday, July 23, 2009, at 10:00
p.m. (U.S. Pacific time).

* Please send your ballot to robert...@hotmail.com (if that e-mail
address has been obscured, that's robertlicuria AT hotmail DOT com).
You can also post your votes to the newsgroup if you want, but all
ballots must be e-mailed to me to be counted.

* Thanks to everyone who voted. Now it's time to pick your winners.

There's only like 4 things outside of the sci-fi I've even seen.

So, my votes are officially up for sale, since I have no other criteria
to go by.

I'm not even going to vote. This is why I gave up even nominating anything a
couple years ago. It wasn't worth the time or effort. I watch lots of stuff
but apparently not much of what the nominators watch. :)

Interesting. A new twist on the importance of cable/satellite channels
such as USA and HBO.

Tough choice here for me between Chloe Sevigny and Jeanne
Tripplehorn, but Sevigny had the more intense role this

If I were to vote[1] I'd vote about 60% like David.

1. But I won't, because that's how they get you.

Oh, c'mon, Brian! Some of the regulars here already finked out
by not participating in the nominating round. We need the whole

Especially given that all Dollhouse deserves isa 'Biggest crap in a
basket series destroying finale outside of Trek' award; I won't even be
watching it when it comes back.

This is much larger than ratv. Trust me that you risk life and limb,

"Twilight" is insultingly horrible. "True Blood" has become one of my
favorite shows. It's loaded with the sort of interesting, likable
characters I could watch do anything, it's funny, strange, has a good
mystery, is impossible to predict at any time what will happen next,
evokes a wonderful gothic atmosphere. The show's a real treasure.

Mostly reruns of "As Time Goes By." :-) And "Kingdom" is a comedy/drama.
I've also seen a sweet Canadian series called "Mixed Blessings," which
co-stars Gary Basaraba. But my TV watching is almost entirely dramas,
sci-fi, and news/public affairs.

Indeed. I'll be happy if either of them wins. I'm hoping for some

Definitely not aimed at tweens! Much more adult and intense. I really
like how Alan Ball makes characters who are different but believable.

*** 15TH ANNUAL RATTY AWARDS ***

This is the final ballot for the 2008-2009 Ratty Awards for the

rec.arts.tv newsgroup, as compiled by Robert Licuria. For the
nomination tallies by show and by network, see the original post in
this thread: http://tr.im/ruUW

The following are the rules for this second stage of voting:

* CAMPAIGNING IS ALLOWED. You may encourage people to vote in the
Rattys on other web sites, blogs, mailing lists, etc., or on other
television-related newsgroups, if you do so with good netiquette. In
fact, I am planning to campaign myself. However, please don't post the
ballot anywhere else, except with permission of one of the Ratty
Awards administrators. Just tell people they can find the ballot at

Right, I was just including it under the cable part of your
"cable/satellite channels" comment.

My mistake! I like Alan Ball too, I would have given this a try if I
had remembered he was at the helm. Time for me to catch up. I also
skimmed through Rob Jenson's thread about this series.

Yup, The Late Late Show. I like him because his monologues were
different from the other late night show hosts, and I remember
thinking he seemed unfairly left out of the RATTYs (and other awards)
ever since he's been on a few years and no longer considered a newbie.

Just an FYI for anyone looking for an easy reference of who the guests
are on the various late night shows:

actually, I probably won't). However, please don't post the ballot

anywhere else, except with permission of one of the Ratty Awards

Saw an episode of that yesterday. Liked her in this a lot, but I

I'd have gone with "The Mentalist" or "Castle," if they'd been available

30 Rock (NBC) - never saw it.
Breaking Bad (AMC) - never saw it.
Dollhouse (Fox) - No way!
How I Met Your Mother (CBS) - The only one I saw, but wouldn't consider
it the best series on television.
Lost (ABC) - never saw it.

I'd have picked among the following if any of them had made the final
five:
The Big Bang Theory
NCIS
The Mentalist
Criminal Minds
Castle
Supernatural
and
Bones.

I'm still not sure which of those I would have picked as BEST. Probably
among The Big Bang Theory, The Mentalist or Criminal Minds. Picking one
is *tough* .

>> WORST SERIES ON TELEVISION
>> Celebrity Apprentice (NBC)

Tough decision? There were soooo many deserving contenders. I was torn
between:

American Idol (Fox)
Celebrity Apprentice (NBC)
Deal or No Deal (NBC/Syndicated)

....and had never seen:

Do Not Disturb (Fox)
Living Lohan (E!)

....but went with American Idol, the cancer that *will* *not* *die* .

"Howie Do It" would 've been another strong contender for worst.

I haven't watched HIMYM this season, so it was right out.

I nominated Castle for several things, but it didn't make the ballot. I
don't watch The Mentalist (watched a preview and it didn't call to me)
and we know where I am with True Blood.

It's still way better than Apprentice or Lohan. Haven't seen Do Not
Disturb (or even heard of it), and Deal or No Deal seems at best mundane.

I know where Rob is. Not sure where you are. Did you watch the whole
first season yet? Any of the second season? Looks like you nominated
Lizzy Caplan 3rd (1 pt.)for BEST DRAMA GUEST ACTRESS, and that was it.

That was on in a Bar & Grill (on multiple screens) where I was eating,
and I COULDN'T avoid it. Tried my best to block it out. :-P Watching
paint dry, grass grow, concrete set, etc., would be way more
interesting.

I'm still on the original pilot that I hated and the second ep that I
don't even remember if I made it all the way through. At this point I
have to start from scratch and I'm frankly not looking forward to it.
Lizzy was nominated on the basis of nude shots linked to here. :)

It's ironic that I caught two of these in reruns this summer.
But I think I like BBT more than any comedy since "Scrubs", so - BBT.

> BEST COMEDY LEAD ACTOR

> Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper - The Big Bang Theory (CBS)

A no-brainer.

> BEST COMEDY LEAD ACTRESS

This is under protest, as I think there were better choices.

She's the heart & soul of this show, from what I've seen.

> BEST COMEDY GUEST ACTOR
> BEST COMEDY GUEST ACTRESS

I'm NO VOTE'ing both of these - I saw none of the former, and I think
there were better options among the latter (starting with Sara Gilbert).

> BEST COMEDY EPISODE

> Better Off Ted, "Racial Sensitivity" (written by Michael Glouberman,
> directed by Paul Lazarus) (ABC)

> How I Met Your Mother, "The Naked Man" (written by Joe Kelly, directed

I can't believe these two made it, as they were no where near among the
best episodes. So I'll grudgingly go with:

> The Big Bang Theory, "The Maternal Capacitance" (story by Chuck Lorre
> & Bill Prady, teleplay by Richard Rosenstock & Steven Molaro, directed
> by Mark Cendrowski) (CBS)

> BEST DRAMA SERIES
> Big Love (HBO)
> Breaking Bad (AMC)
> Friday Night Lights (101 Network)

> The Shield (FX)

Oh, good Lord! I'm NO VOTE'ing this in a *hard* way. What crappy
choices! ("Mad Men" was a pale shadow of itself in season #2... :( )

> BEST DRAMA LEAD ACTOR

> Jon Hamm as Don Draper - Mad Men (AMC)
>

> BEST DRAMA LEAD ACTRESS

> Rose Byrne as Ellen Parsons - Damages (FX)

This is almost a protest vote - Byrne had much more to do in season #1
than in season #2, but I'm watching the show primarily *for Byrne*.

> BEST DRAMA SUPPORTING ACTOR

> John Slattery as Roger Sterling - Mad Men (AMC)
>

> BEST DRAMA SUPPORTING ACTRESS

NO VOTE.

> BEST DRAMA GUEST ACTOR

> Patrick Fischler as Jimmy Barrett - Mad Men, recurring (AMC)

He did a great job in this.

> BEST DRAMA GUEST ACTRESS

> Michelle Trachtenberg as Georgina Sparks - Gossip Girl, recurring (CW)

Oh, what the Hell - she had almost nothing to do this year (as opposed
to season #1), but she was the only lift I got out of season #2, so...

> BEST DRAMA EPISODE

> Mad Men, "A Night to Remember" (written by Robin Veith & Matthew

Limited choices...

> BEST SF SERIES
> Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi)
> Doctor Who (Sci Fi)
> Dollhouse (Fox)
> Fringe (Fox)
> Lost (ABC)

It's another no-brainer - "Lost".

>

> BEST SF LEAD ACTRESS
> Evangeline Lilly as Kate Austen - Lost (ABC)
>

> BEST SF SUPPORTING ACTOR

> Terry O'Quinn as John Locke - Lost (ABC)

Oh, this *sucks*! I'll do what I always do - pull the lever for O'Quinn
- but this race has never been as tight as it was this year!

This is actually a tough category (but I guess it always is) - I'll go
with Mader, but it's a tight run.

Crap, it's a close race between the latter two. I'm actually going to go
against type, and go with "Doctor Who"!!

You should be. Unlike Dollhouse it gets steadily better all the way to
the end. That's why I said:

> BEST DRAMA EPISODE
SHOULD HAVE BEEN :
"For Warrick" (CSI)
or
"You'll Be the Death of Me" (True Blood)

"You'll Be the Death of Me" is Season 1 Episode 12 (of 12).

I know. I provided the links. ;-) Lizzy is in Episodes 7 thru 12, but
you should watch Episodes 1 through 12 in order. Trust me on this

My final ballot:

BEST COMEDY SERIES

How I Met Your Mother (CBS)

* This one was actually hard for me. I had it down to HIMYM and TBBT.
TBBT certainly had Parsons, Baranski and Maternal Capacitance on its
side, but I almost voted for Naked Man in the Episode category and I
think they're about equal in terms of writing, with TBBT having a lot
more zingers, but HIMYM having waaaay better plot and characterization
in the writing. So my considerations came down to this: HIMYM has
the edge in writing overall even though TBBT had one better episode
*and* I think that HIMYM having two supporting actors get my vote
weighs far more heavily than TBBT getting a lead actor vote and a
guest actor vote. (Aside on the math about that: I value lead at
something like, and intuitively rather than in absolute terms, a 4,
supporting at 3 and guest at one-half point relative to each other. So
HIMYM got a 6 in acting and TBBT got a 4.5)

BEST COMEDY LEAD ACTOR

Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper - The Big Bang Theory (CBS)

* Umm, duh.

BEST COMEDY LEAD ACTRESS

Anna Friel as Charlotte "Chuck" Charles - Pushing Daisies (ABC)

And I made up my mind long before her topless photos from the Vanity
Fair UK edition leaked to the press. Of all the characters on the
show, she had the most tongue-twisting dialogue (often exposition,
too) and yet still made it look easy to create a funny, heartwarming
character. The level of difficulty in her performance was *far*
beyond that of the nominee who IMO had the next-best,
next-most-difficult performance, Tina Fey.

BEST COMEDY SUPPORTING ACTOR

Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson - How I Met Your Mother (CBS)

* Once a character is written as broadly as Barney was in earlier
seasons, it's really hard to then go and give the character more
grounded storylines in later seasons (most characters on MASH). More
difficult still is for the actor to also ground his performances and
also be able to turn on a dime to go back to the big, broad storylines
that he's known for -- no character or actor on MASH was able to go
back to big and broad performances once Frank Burns left, thereby
transforming the show fully into a dramedy -- and more difficult again
to be able to go back and forth between the big, broad stuff and the
ground performances (most of the cast of Frasier). IMO, any Emmy
voter who fails to vote for NPH is wrong.

BEST COMEDY SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Cobie Smulders as Robin Scherbatsky - How I Met Your Mother (CBS)

* Same goes for Cobie. Although, interestingly, Robin started out as
a more grounded character and has become loonier, bigger and broader
over the past couple of seasons while still being able to turn on a
dime and go back to grounded Robin.

BEST COMEDY GUEST ACTOR

Creed Bratton as Creed Bratton - The Office, recurring (NBC)

* Creed is frickin' weird. Steals every scene he's in. I'm really,
really glad that he appears in few enough episodes to recurring/guest
rather than supporting because he still wouldn't have won over NPH and
because, well, the rest of the Comedy Guest Actor nominees sucked. I
might have abstained from voting in this category if not for Creed.

BEST COMEDY GUEST ACTRESS
Christine Baranski as Beverly Hofstadter - The Big Bang Theory, "The
Maternal Capacitance" (CBS)

* No-brainer. She should also win this category at the Emmys.

BEST COMEDY EPISODE

The Big Bang Theory, "The Maternal Capacitance" (story by Chuck Lorre
& Bill Prady, teleplay by Richard Rosenstock & Steven Molaro, directed
by Mark Cendrowski) (CBS)

* Same thing, and it was nominated for an Emmy, right?

Grouping five of my votes together:

BEST DRAMA SERIES
The Shield (FX)

BEST DRAMA LEAD ACTOR

Michael Chiklis as Vic Mackey - The Shield (FX)

BEST DRAMA SUPPORTING ACTOR

Walton Goggins as Shane Vendrell - The Shield (FX)

BEST DRAMA SUPPORTING ACTRESS

CCH Pounder as Claudette Wyms - The Shield (FX)

BEST DRAMA EPISODE

The Shield, "Family Meeting" (written by Shawn Ryan, directed by Clark
Johnson) (FX)

* The Shield's total shut-out at the Emmys was the most egregious,
inexcusable snub since every year Lauren Graham was not nominated for
Comedy Lead Actress for Gilmore Girls. IMO, at the Emmys, the entire
Drama track of nominations holds no credibility whatsoever.

BEST DRAMA LEAD ACTRESS
Connie Britton as Tami Taylor - Friday Night Lights (101 Network)

* Umm, duh.

BEST DRAMA GUEST ACTOR
Gaius Charles as Brian "Smash" Williams - Friday Night Lights,
recurring (101 Network)

BEST DRAMA GUEST ACTRESS

Laurie Holden as Olivia Murray - The Shield, recurring (FX)

* I think that the lists of nominees for both Guest Actor categories
sucked. I wouldn't even have voted for Holden except for a certain
amount of sentimentality for her performance as Marita Covarrubias on
The X-Files.

BEST SF SERIES
Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi)

* Yes, over Chuck.

BEST SF LEAD ACTOR

Zachary Levi as Chuck Bartowski - Chuck (NBC)

* Almost a coinflip between Levi and Tennant.

BEST SF LEAD ACTRESS

Anna Paquin as Sookie Stackhouse - True Blood (HBO)

* If I hadn't marathoned my True Blood s1 DVDs last week, Yvonne
Strahotski would have gotten my vote here . . .

BEST SF SUPPORTING ACTOR
Nelsan Ellis as Lafayette Reynolds - True Blood (HBO)

* . . . and John Noble would have gotten my vote here.

BEST SF SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Elizabeth Mitchell as Juliet Burke - Lost (ABC)

* Rutina Westly definitely came close to getting my vote, but IMO, the
level of difficulty that the role of Juliet required was substantially
greater than that for Tara. If "V" really does steal Mitchell away
from Lost or causes Mitchell to qualify for Guest Actor for Lost
rather than Supporting next season, then I think it'll be hard to vote
for anyone else but Westly in this category next year.

BEST SF GUEST ACTOR

Dean Stockwell as John Cavil - Battlestar Galactica, recurring (Sci
Fi)

* IMO, this was a default vote. Cavil was the most important
character in this category to his respective series by far. And IMO,
Pellegrino's nomination was ridonkulous because his role was so small
(one episode and not really a whole lot to do but look Christ-like)
and his character so ill-defined by the writers as of yet.

BEST SF GUEST ACTRESS

Kate Vernon as Ellen Tigh - Battlestar Galactica, recurring (Sci Fi)

* This one wasn't a default vote -- I loved her performance as Ellen,
particularly the way she gets between Sol and Caprica Six.

BEST SF EPISODE
Battlestar Galactica, "Daybreak" (written by Ronald D. Moore, directed
by Michael Rymer) (Sci Fi)

* What? I don't get how people can object to the finale of a series
based in part on the Bible having Biblical overtones in its finale.
(Same goes for the episode's overtones of Von Danikken's Chariot of
the Gods). The last half-hour and the ultimate reveal of the nature
of who Head Six and Head Baltar are IMO provides the *thematic
prequel* to the chronological prequel, Caprica.

BEST TV MOVIE/MINI-SERIES

BEST ACTOR - TV MOVIE/MINI-SERIES

BEST ACTRESS - TV MOVIE/MINI-SERIES

* No votes for these three categories. Not enough of them, didn't
watch 'em.

BEST VARIETY SERIES/SPECIAL
The Soup (E!)

BEST PERFORMANCE - VARIETY SERIES/SPECIAL

Tina Fey - Saturday Night Live (NBC)

* The selection of nominees in this category sucked. Had to give the
edge to Tina Fey for the historic nature of her deconstruction (and
destruction) of Sarah Palin. Otherwise, Joel McHale would have gotten
my vote.

BEST REALITY/GAME PROGRAM (series or special)
The Amazing Race (CBS)

* By default.

BEST NEWS/TALK/DOCUMENTARY PROGRAM (series or special)

Countdown with Keith Olbermann (MSNBC)

* By default. Even though I'm a fan of Olbermann, I think it's
ridiculous that The Daily Show (my real pick here) and The Colbert
Report, both of which are half-interview, half-editorial are nominated
in the Variety Series categories, where they clearly do NOT belong.
BTW, this goes for the late night TALK SHOWS in general (Letterman,
Conan, etc.), too. Perhaps "Late Night Talk Show" should get its own
categories?

BEST ANIMATED PROGRAM (series or special)

South Park (Comedy Central)

* By default, until Futurama becomes eligible again next year.

BEST NEW SERIES
True Blood (HBO)

* Umm, duh.

MOST IMPROVED SERIES
ER (NBC)

* IMO, The Office got much, MUCH worse this year. I don't think that
a new show should be eligible for this category (much less the
awfulness that is Dollhouse). I also think that SNL has been on a
roll fo the past couple of seasons, so the time to have nominated it,
much less voted for it, would have been last year or the year before.
Also, while 24 was much improved over the absolutely shitty season 6,
it still didn't come close to the level of improvement of ER, which
has consistently improved by leaps and bounds over each of the past 6
seasons since the watching-it-makes-me-want-to-kill-myself nadir of
Green's death, Carter's miscarriage storyline and Abby's first bout
with alcoholism. I never could have anticipated the show turning
Archie Morris from one of its worst characters when he first joined
the show to becoming one of its best since Clooney left. Pratt and
Morris were a great team the past couple of years, and the season
started out with such an amazing bang of Pratt's death and Scott
Grimes's heartfelt performance of Morris trying and failing to save
him *and* keep himself (much less the rest of the ER staff) together
while doing so.

BEST SERIES ON TELEVISION

How I Met Your Mother (CBS)

* Coin flip between HIMYM and True Blood. Part of HIMYM's edge was
True Blood clearly deserving the New Series vote and part of it is the
ingenuity of HIMYM's nonlinear structure that makes it a storytelling
tour de force. Also, I give HIMYM a slight edge in the overall unity
of the ensemble, how well it gels together. Even by the end of the
season, True Blood is still a little ramshackle in that department,
having Terry Bellefleur come almost out of nowhere as a fully-realized
character in the last half of the season and both Terry and Rene
almost being wallpaper in the first half of the season.

WORST SERIES ON TELEVISION
Celebrity Apprentice (NBC)

* Among those nominated. IMO, Gleen Beck is far, far more wretched.

WORST MALE PERFORMER ON TELEVISION

Donald Trump as himself - The Celebrity Apprentice (NBC)

* Ditto. Even though, yes, I think the category should be renamed
"The David Caruso Hall of Shame Award for Worst Male Performer on
Television"

WORST FEMALE PERFORMER ON TELEVISION

Paris Hilton as herself - Paris Hilton's My New BFF (MTV)

* Given that Sarah Palin wasn't nominated, this one was a gimmee.

Couple of things (okay, six or seven things) I'd like to add in hopes
of helping Ani stick with it:

* Pay attention to the supporting characters.

* Fangtasia is an interesting club. And an hilarious parody of the
Lestat area of Vampire-Goth chic.

* Yes, Sookie's brother Jason is a whore. Or whatever you might want
to call the male version of a nympho.

* The show's format is a bit unusual, playing a LOT like one 12-hour
long movie, so by the end of the second episode, you're not really
more than about 2/3rds of the way through the exposition. It *does*
really start to pick up in episode 3 as the serial killer storyline
starts to heat up. Episode 6, the midpoint, is a stunner.

* I think that the show had a difficult time setting up the character
of Sam Merlotte -- I won't give away why, but it helped me to keep in
mind throughout the course of the season that he never really has a
chance with Sookie. Probably the most inconsistent character in the
series, but 3/4s of the way through the season (after you've gotten
sick of him and Tara semikindamaybeishhookingupwithbenefits), you'll
know why -- and it won't be *quite* because of what you think.
(Unless, say, you know already because somebody spoiled it in a
non-spoiler thread.)

* I suggest trying to look at it from the direction of it being more a
black comedy-horror and soap *parody* in a Southern-Gothic horror
setting than as a horror series or a soap. It's mostly machine-gun
fast and crazy.

* Don't stifle the urge to laugh whenever Sookie lets out an instant,
turn-on-a-dime bloodcurdling scream of terror (which is, to say, a
number of times). It's supposed to be as much funny -- yes, I
promise, funny -- as it is a legitimate expression of the intense
horror she's feeling. It's kinda like Joss Whedon directing Buffy
while tripping on Acid. Really. And I mean *Really.* Wait for it
when Lizzy Caplan finally shows up.

* My favorite reaction shot of Sookie: when she says, "Shut the fuck
up!" in semi-understated amazement at a revelation in one of the later
episodes of the season. It's so totally worth the wait and you'll
know it when you see it.

* Several things that happen later in the season are clearly set-ups
for storylines that I know nothing about because I haven't seen them
yet in season 2 (so they aren't resolved in season 1). Especially
(but not only) regarding s1 latecomer Michelle Forbes and the lead
characters she interacts with.

Although I voted for HIMYM, I couldn't criticize voting for BBT, 30
Rock or, especially Pushing Daisies (which I think should have been in
the SF/F track anyway.) However, votes for The Office this season
will probably get me to question a person's sanity.

It's hard to explain this to ya, since you haven't seen many episodes,
but they're all five the heart and soul of the show. Well, Barney's
more the penis of the show than the heart of the show, but
nevertheless, HIMYM's like Friends with respect to the heart and soul
of the show being a constantly moving target, ususally the foil
telling the costar whose storyline (whether A-, B- or C-) that they're
acting like an ass. It can be a bit confusing though, as Ted, Robin
and Barney all idealize Lily and Marshall's relationship

It's a measure of how little you've seen True Blood and how hypnotized
you are by Eliza Dushku's breasts (even with clothing over them) that
you'd even consider Dollhouse to be a default choice. Especially over
Fringe if you haven't seen True Blood.

On the contrary, in this category, I've seen examples of all but
"Medium". In fact, I think I saw nearly every Skiffy show that was
nominated. ("True Blood" I've only seen one episode of - the season #2
premiere, but I wasn't all that impressed by it. But then again, I
*never* am by HBO shows, which always come off as overrated hype to me).

Even though season #5 wasn't as good as season #4, "Lost" is still
head-and-shoulders above the rest, IMO.

So I take it you haven't seen True Blood yet? I, of course, won't let
anybody forget that I marathoned through the end s1 DVDs two weeks
ago, after the nominations, but before the final voting, so I had to
change my vote from Strahotski to Anna Paquin. Strahotski remains my
pick for Hottest SF Actress, but there's no RATTY award for that --
yet.

Well, Lily /can/ /be/ a manipulative little conniver, but usually that
carries with it the connotation of the person being mean and a
backstabber, and Lily means well. She's a nice person.

That would be another rapidly overwhelmed category.

And then we'd have Ian campaigning for "Hottest talentless male using
sunglasses as a crutch" as a category.

Ian would want a "best actress under 17" category just so all his

the guy shrugged his shoulders, said 'eh' perked right up and got on
