Syfy Orders Past Vs Future Reality Series �Opposite Worlds� To Air

EXCLUSIVE: Syfy has picked up Opposite Worlds, a 12-episode unscripted
series based on a hit Chilean reality format, which will be executive
produced by former NBC reality chief-turned-producer Craig Plestis.
Syfy has acquired the U.S. format rights from Canal 13 and distributor
Banijay International, and plans to air Opposite Worlds� 12 episodes
over six weeks, marking the first time Syfy has ever aired an original
series twice a week.

In Opposite Worlds, twenty people from all walks of life are mixed
together in two opposing teams that live in two distinctly different
worlds � the Past and the Future. The Future is a Utopia where every
wish can be granted with a push of a button; the Past is a constant
struggle for survival. Each week, players compete in a series of
challenges to determine who lives in the Past and who lives in the
Future. �This groundbreaking, edgy program is a remarkable television
experiment transporting the audience and the contestants into starkly
opposite worlds, simultaneously,� said Syfy�s president of original
content Mark Stern. This is Syfy�s second adaptation of a hit
international reality series, following its success with Total
Blackout.

Through his Smart Dog Media, Plestis has executive produced NBC�s
Minute to Win It, Who�s Still Standing, as well as the upcoming
singing game show, The Winner Is. The deal with Syfy, brockered by
Paradigm, comes just ahead of MIPCOM 2012, where Banijay International
will officially launch the Opposite Worlds format to the global
market.

As long as people continue to watch this crap, there will be very little
actual science fiction on Syfy. They're down to three scripted shows,
all of which I watch, but none of which are particularly good.

I don't know how much "science" there will be in it, but it's a "reality"
TV show, so it's obviously going to be complete fiction (wannabe actors
playing to a script and then heavily edited after filming). :-\

You mean just right now? Having 3 shows on at one time is a good total
for a cable channel, especially in the Fall when they don't want to
compete against the new season.

That's all they have total. Some new shows are in development or perhaps
being shot, but none are scheduled.

And, no, I don't think that's a "good total" for a channel that defines
itself as full-time science fiction.

Wow. Looking at that list of 47 shows it seems to me that there is very
little on cable television. Of the stuff above I am only watching:
SYFY - 2 shows: ALPHAS and BEING HUMAN.
TNT - 2 shows: FRANKLIN & BASH, FALLING SKIES.
TBS - 1 show: COUGAR TOWN, but it is being generous to even credit TBS
with the show.
FX - 1 show: JUSTIFIED.
USA - 1 show: SUITS
ABCF - 0 shows.
So, that gives cable a 15% success rate for me.

7 of those shows haven't premiered yet.

I don't know if a 15% success rate is bad. If you extrapolate it to
all of TV's original scripted shows airing during the year that's got
to be more than one could watch.

Not bad, but not any better than broadcast TV, either. It sort of dispels
the rumor/belief that cable is offering a superior product line.

OK, I forgot about Being Human, since I don't watch it. Lost Girl isn't
their own show, nor is it a new show, so I wasn't counting it, but I
realize that's debatable. When they get the other shows on their
schedule, they will have what I would consider a decent amount of
programming, although Continuum and Primeval are, like Lost Girl,
Canadian-produced shows for which Syfy has purchased US rights. Keep in
mind that some of these shows have short orders, like Alphas' 13. While
that's typical for cable, that's a little more than half a season on a
broadcast network. The bottom line is that Syfy currently has three
hours weekly of new scripted programming, four if Lost Girl is still
running and if you count shows that Syfy didn't produce. I'll leave it
to others to decide whether that's "very little," as I originally
described it.

A very nice list of other cable networks' shows, BTW.

I consider it original from a viewer's perspective if the first place
you can see it is on Syfy, and "Lost Girl" season 3 will premiere at
the same time in the U.S. and Canada. By the same definition I didn't
count "Sinbad" because it's an acquisition.

Being Human isn't really "their own show" either ... it's cloned from the
British show with silly changes, as usual.
