This is the final ballot for the 2007-2008 Ratty Awards for the
rec.arts.tv newsgroup, as compiled by Robert Licuria.
There were 28 voters in the nominations round this year, down from 32
last year.
Lost once again led all series in nominations this year. The 16
nominations for Lost were twice as many nominations as those received
by any other show. ABC took top honors among networks, with 37
nominations spread among 10 different programs, just edging out NBC,
which received 36 nominations spread among 12 different programs.
Welcome to the party: The most nominated new series were The Big Bang
Theory, Damages, Pushing Daisies, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor
Chronicles, each of which received 4 nominations including one for
best series in its respective genre.
We'll miss you: The most nominated series to end its run in the
2007-08 season was The Wire, with 5 nominations.
On the cusp: There were no examples this year of a series coming close
to nominations in multiple categories but winding up with zero
nominations. However, the shows which were most often cited as just
missing nominations were Battlestar Galactica and Mad Men.

The following are the rules for this second stage of voting:
* CAMPAIGNING IS ALLOWED. You may encourage people to vote in the
Rattys on other web sites, blogs, mailing lists, etc., or on other
television-related newsgroups, if you do so with good netiquette. In
fact, I am planning to campaign myself. However, please don't post the
ballot anywhere else. Just tell people they can find the ballot at
the rec.arts.tv newsgroup (you can provide a URL as a link).
* In the final results posting, I will post the percentages received
by all nominees if and only if I receive ballots from more than 100
voters.
* Anyone reading this posting is eligible to vote, whether or not you
voted in the first round.
* In each category, delete the four nominees you don't want to vote
for, leaving your one single vote in each category.
* You don't have to vote in every category, but please try to vote in
as many categories as you can. If you are skipping a category, please
delete all of the nominees in that category.
* Please try to keep spacing between each category to a minimum. All
I should see is the category title, next line your vote, a space, and
then the next category. This will help keep your ballot short.
* The deadline to submit votes is Sunday, August 3, 2008, at 10:00
p.m. (U.S. Pacific time).
* Please send your ballot directly to me at grom...@hotmail.com (if
that e-mail address has been obscured, that's gromit82 AT hotmail DOT
com). Unlike in the nominations round, I will be compiling these
ballots myself, so you can respond directly to this message. You can
also post your votes to the newsgroup if you want, but all ballots
must be e-mailed to me to be counted.
* Thanks to everyone who voted. Now it's time to pick your winners.

* I have to say, it's a good thing that CBS has episodes of TBBT on
its website or my votes would have been substantially different.
* Who were the people who classified Pushing Daisies as SF/F rather
than Comedy? You subSTANtially lowered the quality of the Comedy
catageories -- and the SF/F categories *didn't* need the help.
GrrrrrRRRrrrr. You're the reason that Torchwood and John Barrowman
didn't get nominated in SF/F as far as I'm concerned. Grrrr!
Okay, onto my votes:

Well, it's no surprise that I consider Disastrous Housejerks to be
one of the worst shows on television, so that never would have gotten
my vote in the first place. So that leaves the four actual
contenders: 30 Rock and The Office both had underwhelming years
overall, which left me to choose between TBBT and HIMYM. Like I said,
if CBS didn't have episodes of TBBT at their website, I never would
have been able to overload on them in June. Thus, in the absence of
Pushing Daisies, TBBT gets my vote over HIMYM.

I was going to vote for James Roday and then I discovered TBBT and
Sheldon's psychosis.

>Rainn Wilson as Dwight Schrute - The Office (NBC)
The Office is having an off-year (hence, no Carell or Wilson). I
don't vote for anyone whose first name is Rhys and Orson makes me
think of Mork & Mindy. NPH wins by practically default with costar
Jason Segel being his only real competition. (Reminds me, must stop
writing this post for 15 minutes to watch part III of Dr. Horrible.)
(Yay! Blink-and-you-miss-her cameo by Liz Vassey!)

>Alyson Hannigan as Lily Aldrin - How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
>Angela Kinsey as Angela Martin - The Office (NBC)
>Vanessa Williams as Wilhelmina Slater - Ugly Betty (ABC)
Wilhemina Slater has jumped the shark as a character (which should
have been impossible given that Ugly Betty is a camp show). Angela
didn't have as strong an arc on The Office as Pam did (one could argue
that Jenna Fischer should be in the Comedy Lead Actress category).
Which means Pam Versus Lily. Well, Lily's arc wasn't very good, her
hair was terrible and that tan -- whether it's fake or not, it's
*bad.* It's like Alyson said, "You know, I'm going to stop being
Alyson anymore and turn myself into Nicole Richie."
So again, the vote here is a no-brainer: Jenna Fischer.

Can't stand Gio. I don't even remember Nigel St. Nigel on Psych last
season, My Name Is Earl jumped the shark and I don't watch Old
Christine, so my vote for Will Arnett here is by really by default
rather than interest.

>Carrie Fisher as Rosemary - 30 Rock, "Rosemary's Baby" (NBC)
>Amy Ryan as Holly - The Office, "Goodbye, Toby" (NBC)
>Brooke Smith as Valerie Scottson - Weeds, recurring (Showtime)
I haven't watched my s3 DVDs for Weeds yet, but I figure that I would
probably vote for Brooke Smith if I were caught up yet. Amy Ryan
shows promise as Holly on The Office, but I think it's too early to
have put her up against the remaining three in the category. So I
narrowed it down to this: the Jack/CeCe thing lasted for at least a
couple episodes longer than it was worth and I felt like Falco was
mugging her way through the last two episodes of the storyline. I
loved both Carrie Fisher on 30 Rock and Sarah Chalke on HIMYM. Sarah
Chalke not having been in a Star Wars movie was a plus, as was her
great chemistry with Josh Radnor. She makes it essentially impossible
to root against either Robin or Stella being the Mother. So Sarah
Chalke gets my vote here.
(Also: Boo to whoever didn't vote to nominate Britney Spears in this
category. Still wouldn't have voted for her if she were up against
Chalke, but I'd have voted for Spears above anyone else in the
category except Chalke.

The Office sucked this year. Except for Dinner Party, which was
better than everything else on the list. I almost want to say that
this is the equivalent of a broken clock being right twice a day with
the only two outstanding episodes of The Office being nominated, but
the squirm-inducing qualities of Dinner Party are what make it the
classic.

Oooo. This one was hard, picking between Connie Britton and Emily
Deschanel, but Tami's storyline was muddled this season while
Deschanel transcended her material by light-years. I marathoned the
season 2 DVDs of Bones over the Christmas/Strike break and the
difference between her performances last year and this year are
amazing. She has been so carefully modulating her performance as
Tempe over these three years that Tempe's growing out of her shell
this year and shedding her often deadpan monotone from s1 & 2 is
almost imperceptible except through such marathon viewing of how
emotionally unavailable she was in the first two seasons.

Adrianne Palicki. IMO, the Tyra-Landry justifiable-homicide (NOT
murder) story galvanized both of these characters, who kinda took the
teen part of the show away from most of the rest of the teen
characters -- in particular, Matt Saracen, but also, to a lesser
extent, Julie and Street. Absolutely loved the storyline as it's not
soap opera, it *does* happen in real life and Landry's angst over it
is IMO very in keeping with his being the son of a cop *and* a
thoughtfully religious person. But Jesse Plemons would never have
been able to up his game as Landry without Adrianne Palicki being such
a formidable presence to act with/against. They played their
characters' contrasting temperaments marvelously, with Landry
struggling with his impulse *against* hiding his guilt and Tyra, being
a child of extremely neglectful parents, knowing how to do nothing but
hide anything and everything and nearly becoming a latter-day Lady
Macbeth except for Landry coming clean to the police. Afterwards,
Landry and Tyra have just about traded places in temperament and his
standing up to her at the dance was well-played by both.
Also: Leighton Meester is in the wrong frickin' category -- she's just
as much the lead of Gossip Girl as both Blake Lively and Padge Bailey
are. Or Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel both being the leads on
Gilmore Girls. (rolls eyes)

>Richard Schiff as David Green - Eli Stone, "Soul Free" (ABC)
>Glynn Turman as Alex Sr. - In Treatment, recurring (HBO)
>Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Clayton "Clay" Davis - The Wire, recurring (HBO)
Luke MacFarlane. Scotty is so sweet a character that most actors
would probably have played him as flaming. But MacFarlane plays him
as real -- as a sweet, mellow guy who happens to be gay in love with a
type-A lawyer who also just happens to be gay. They sure seem like
the first post-identity-politics gay couple on network television to
me.

>Jurnee Smollett as Beth - Grey's Anatomy, "Freedom" (ABC)
>Mira Sorvino as Cate Milton – House, "Frozen" (Fox)
>Michelle Trachtenberg as Georgina Sparks - Gossip Girl, recurring (CW)
Anne Dudek. For the same reason I voted for Robert Sean Leonard.
(Also, if Dudek had been nominated in Supporting Actress, where I
think she belonged, I would have voted for Michelle Trachtenberg
instead. But Dudek's inclusion here isn't the travesty of
miscategorization as Leighton Meester as Supporting rather than Lead
or Pushing Daisies as SF/F rather than comedy.)

>Edward James Olmos as William Adama - Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi)
>Lee Pace as Ned - Pushing Daisies (ABC)
>David Tennant as the Doctor - Doctor Who (Sci Fi)
David Tennant. Tennant is better than most of the episodes this
season while the Losties weren't nearly as good as the show as a
whole. And Pushing Daisies is awesome due to the unnominated Anna
Friel and Kristin Chenoweth. I like Lee Pace, but he's out of place
here and should be in the comedy category. Friel and Chenoweth's lack
of nominations is kinda galling.

>Evangeline Lilly as Kate Austen - Lost (ABC)
>Mary McDonnell as Laura Roslin - Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi)
>Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper – Torchwood (BBC America)
>Yvonne Strahovski as Sarah Walker - Chuck (NBC)
Eve Myles, Torchwood.
And as I've said before, IMO, miscategorizing Pushing Daisies as SF/F
rather than comedy cost Torchwood an SF/F series nod and John
Barrowman a lead actor nod.

>Jack Coleman as Noah Bennet - Heroes (NBC)
>Henry Ian Cusick as Desmond Hume - Lost (ABC)
>Michael Hogan as Saul Tigh - Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi)
>Terry O'Quinn as John Locke - Lost (ABC)
Michael Hogan is good, but shouldn't be there (espeically not over
Aaron Douglas from BSG or Burn Gorman from Torchwood). I loved The
Constant, but IMO, other than that episode, Desmond was under-used the
entire season the same way that Sayid was under-used last season.
Unfortunately, now that Andrews has screen time again, he seems
totally bored with the part now. That leaves a near coin-flip between
the similarly hinky Noah Bennet and John Locke. I went with Jack
Coleman as Noah as the parallel storylines of Noah-Claire and Bob-Elle
weren't just the spine of the whole season, they saved the show from
the sheer wretchedness of the Kenzei storyline.

James Marsters. It really isn't easy to steal Torchwood the show away
from Barrowman, Myles and Gorman, but he did it. With MUCH greater
difficulty than he stole Buffy and Angel.
>BEST SF GUEST ACTRESS
>Kristen Bell as Elle Bishop – Heroes, recurring (NBC)
>Anjelica Huston as Cynthia Keener – Medium, recurring (NBC)
>Carey Mulligan as Sally Sparrow - Doctor Who, "Blink" (Sci Fi)
>Katee Sackhoff as Sarah Corvus - Bionic Woman, recurring (NBC)
>Sonya Walger as Penny Widmore – Lost, recurring (ABC)
Kristen Bell. Same reason I voted for Jack Coleman above. Elle's
sociopathic nature -- possible longterm undiagnosed reactive
attachment disorder IMO turned her into a very necessary part of the
conspiracy element of the show's mytharc. I think they should throw
as much money as they can at Bell to get her to stop doing movies for
the duration of the rest of the series and make her a lead character.
If Ali Larter's Nikki didn't make it out of the explosion or she's
demoted to recurring, then Bell/Elle is a fine replacement with a more
straightforward psychosis -- and not because (a long time ago) she
used to be Veronica Mars.
Sackhoff gets the booby prize for doing the exact *wrong* thing as
Sarah Corvus -- drawing SO much attention to herself and her basic
Starbuck-ish personality type that she overpowered the story, failed
to support the story, failed to bring anything new of herself to the
show and thus she failed the show in toto. Not blaming the failure of
the show on her -- there are many reasons that the show failed, not
the least of which being fangeeks with expectations so high that they
couldn't possibly have ever been met.

IMO, of the episodes nominated, it's Lost: There's No Place Like Home.

He's on at 12:30 at night. My guess is that everyone in ATAS who
stays up that late is watching Conan O'Brien. Late night talk shows
are hard habits to break. But I've been enjoying Ferguson's show a
lot more than Conan for the last year or so. Ferguson is free-form,
almost Tom Snyder, but funny, while Conan's shtick has ossified.
Conan's probably the best interviewer of the four network shows,
however.
Which do you mean, "Babylon 5" (the show itself) or all things in the
Babylon 5 universe? No, I'm not bitter about "Babylon 5" (the show)
ending. After all, it had a beginning, middle and end, and that's
perfectly fine. A-OK. In fact, it's refreshing. It's just too bad
that because of the PTEN/TNT timing situation that it couldn't have
ended better. I *am* bitter about "Crusade" ending the way it did, and
about the way TNT-Atlanta messed with and ended "Crusade." I *am*
bitter about The Sci-Fi Channel going for that excrement "Babylon 5 -
The Legend of the Rangers - To Live and Die in Starlight" (a.k.a.
TLaDiS) instead of "Crusade", and TLaDiS being the last B5 performance
of Andreas Katsulas. :-( Also, I *am* bitter about Warner Brothers
being so spectacularly and stunningly cheap and timid when backing the
Babylon 5 project "The Lost Tales" or indeed any new Babylon 5 project.
I feel bad for any TV Sci-Fi/Fantasy property which that studio owns
(and that includes "Brimstone").
Regarding my abstains above, I abstained where I could not, in good
conscience, vote. It was either because I had seen none of the shows,
performers or performances that were nominated in that category, or
because all the ones I did see, I didn't like, ....not out of any
bitterness.
I'm just expaining, here. Don't think that I'm pissed off at you in any
way, because I'm not. :-) I'm only pissed off at Warner Brothers,
TNT-Atlanta (May they burn in hell.), The Sci-Fi Channel and Bonnie
Hammer.

I don't think there's necessarily any correlation between how
much something is discussed, and how many people watch it.
There are a number of things I watch where I don't feel there's

The stripped down vote is emailed, here is the commentary track
>The Best:
>
>BEST COMEDY SERIES
>30 Rock (NBC)
>The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
>Desperate Housewives (ABC)
>How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
>The Office (NBC)
Amazingly, I've actually watched three of these, at least occasionally. My
vote, like the last two years, goes to HIMYM
>BEST COMEDY LEAD ACTOR
>Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy - 30 Rock (NBC)
>Steve Carell as Michael Scott - The Office (NBC)
>Johnny Galecki as Leonard Hofstadter - The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
>Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper - The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
>James Roday as Shawn Spencer – Psych (USA)
The ensemble sitcoms do have a problem here. In any case, I went for
Johhny Galecki.
>BEST COMEDY LEAD ACTRESS
>Christina Applegate as Samantha Newly - Samantha Who? (ABC)
>Marcia Cross as Bree Hodge - Desperate Housewives (ABC)
>Tina Fey as Liz Lemon - 30 Rock (NBC)
>Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Christine Campbell - The New Adventures of Old
>Christine (CBS)
>Mary-Louise Parker as Nancy Botwin – Weeds (Showtime)
I voted for Christina Applegate, but there are actresses who didn't make
the cut I would have voted ahead of her.
>BEST COMEDY SUPPORTING ACTOR
>Rhys Darby as Murray Hewitt - Flight of the Conchords (HBO)
>Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson - How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
>Kyle MacLachlan as Orson Hodge - Desperate Housewives (ABC)
>Jason Segel as Marshall Eriksen - How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
>Rainn Wilson as Dwight Schrute - The Office (NBC)
Niel Patrick Harris. He's more, well, impactful than Jason Segel.
>BEST COMEDY SUPPORTING ACTRESS
>Dana Delany as Katherine Mayfair - Desperate Housewives (ABC)
>Jenna Fischer as Pam Beesly - The Office (NBC)
>Alyson Hannigan as Lily Aldrin - How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
>Angela Kinsey as Angela Martin - The Office (NBC)
>Vanessa Williams as Wilhelmina Slater - Ugly Betty (ABC)
Alyson Hannigan
Nothing you can say will take me away from my girl.
>BEST COMEDY GUEST ACTOR
>Will Arnett as Devon Banks - 30 Rock, recurring (NBC)
>Beau Bridges as Carl Hickey - My Name Is Earl, recurring (NBC)
>Tim Curry as Nigel St. Nigel - Psych, "American Duos" (USA)
>Freddy Rodriguez as Giovanni "Gio" Rossi - Ugly Betty, recurring (ABC)
>Blair Underwood as Mr. Harris - The New Adventures of Old Christine,
>recurring (CBS)
Tim Curry was on Psych? Maybe I should have watched. Anyway, Freddy
Roriguez.
>BEST COMEDY GUEST ACTRESS
>Sarah Chalke as Stella Zinman - How I Met Your Mother, recurring (CBS)
>Edie Falco as Celeste Cunningham - 30 Rock, recurring (NBC)
>Carrie Fisher as Rosemary - 30 Rock, "Rosemary's Baby" (NBC)
>Amy Ryan as Holly - The Office, "Goodbye, Toby" (NBC)
>Brooke Smith as Valerie Scottson - Weeds, recurring (Showtime)
I saw 4 of the 5, and I like all 5 actresses. Guess I'll vote for Sarah
Chalke, since Britney didn't make the cut.
>BEST COMEDY EPISODE
>30 Rock, "Cooter" (written by Tina Fey, directed by Don Scardino)
>(NBC)
>The Big Bang Theory, "The Middle Earth Paradigm" (story by David
>Goetsch, teleplay by David Litt & Robert Cohen, directed by Mark
>Cendrowski) (CBS)
>How I Met Your Mother, "Slapsgiving" (written by Matt Kuhn, directed
>by Pamela Fryman) (CBS)
>The Office, "Dinner Party" (written by Gene Stupnitsky & Lee
>Eisenberg, directed by Paul Feig) (NBC)
>The Office, "Goodbye, Toby" (written by Jennifer Celotta & Paul
>Lieberstein, directed by Paul Feig) (NBC)
Slapsgiving, of course.
>BEST DRAMA SERIES
>Damages (FX)
>Dexter (Showtime)
>Friday Night Lights (NBC)
>House (Fox)
>The Wire (HBO)
I voted for House, but there are at least two series that didn't make the
cut I would have voted for ahead of it.
>BEST DRAMA LEAD ACTOR
>Gabriel Byrne as Paul - In Treatment (HBO)
>Kyle Chandler as Eric Taylor - Friday Night Lights (NBC)
>Bryan Cranston as Walter H. White - Breaking Bad (AMC)
>Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan - Dexter (Showtime)
>Hugh Laurie as Gregory House – House (Fox)
I like House over Dexter (though neither is a favorite), but I like Michael
C. Hall's performance over Hugh Laurie's. That's the way I voted.
>BEST DRAMA LEAD ACTRESS
>Connie Britton as Tami Taylor - Friday Night Lights (NBC)
>Glenn Close as Patty Hewes - Damages (FX)
>Emily Deschanel as Temperance Brennan - Bones (Fox)
>Calista Flockhart as Kitty Walker - Brothers and Sisters (ABC)
>Chloe Sevigny as Nicolette Grant - Big Love (HBO)
Emily Deschanel, although she was better in the first season.
>BEST DRAMA SUPPORTING ACTOR
>Zeljko Ivanek as Ray Fiske - Damages (FX)
>Brad Leland as Buddy Garrity - Friday Night Lights (NBC)
>Robert Sean Leonard as James Wilson - House (Fox)
>Ron Rifkin as Saul Holden - Brothers and Sisters (ABC)
>Donald Sutherland as Tripp Darling - Dirty Sexy Money (ABC)
Robert Sean Leonard. It was between him and Donald Sutherland.
>BEST DRAMA SUPPORTING ACTRESS
>January Jones as Betty Draper - Mad Men (AMC)
>Leighton Meester as Blair Waldorf - Gossip Girl (CW)
>Adrianne Palicki as Tyra Collette - Friday Night Lights (NBC)
>Mia Wasikowska as Sophie - In Treatment (HBO)
>Natalie Zea as Karen Darling - Dirty Sexy Money (ABC)
Leighton Meester, pretty much bay default
>BEST DRAMA GUEST ACTOR
>Luke MacFarlane as Scotty Wandell - Brothers and Sisters, recurring
>(ABC)
>Glenn Morshower as Chad Clarke - Friday Night Lights, recurring (NBC)
>Richard Schiff as David Green - Eli Stone, "Soul Free" (ABC)
>Glynn Turman as Alex Sr. - In Treatment, recurring (HBO)
>Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Clayton "Clay" Davis - The Wire, recurring (HBO)
Richard Schiff
>BEST DRAMA GUEST ACTRESS
>Anne Dudek as Amber Volakis – House, recurring (Fox)
>Amy Ryan as Beatrice "Beadie" Russell - The Wire, recurring (HBO)
>Jurnee Smollett as Beth - Grey's Anatomy, "Freedom" (ABC)
>Mira Sorvino as Cate Milton – House, "Frozen" (Fox)
>Michelle Trachtenberg as Georgina Sparks - Gossip Girl, recurring (CW)
Okay, this is a Whedonista vote, but I did like her performance
>BEST DRAMA EPISODE
>Friday Night Lights, "Leave No One Behind" (written by Aaron Rahsaan
>Thomas, directed by Dean White) (NBC)
>House, "Wilson's Heart" (written by Peter Blake & David Foster &
>Russel Friend & Garrett Lerner, directed by Katie Jacobs) (Fox)
>Life, "Fill It Up" (written by Rand Ravich, directed by Daniel
>Sackheim) (NBC)
>Mad Men, "The Wheel" (written by Matthew Weiner & Robin Veith,
>directed by Matthew Weiner) (AMC)
>The Wire, "-30-" (story by David Simon & Ed Burns, teleplay by David
>Simon, directed by Clark Johnson) (HBO)
The Wheel. I'm not sure why I finally picked it over Wilson's Heart, but I
did.
>BEST SF SERIES
>Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi)
>Doctor Who (Sci Fi)
>Lost (ABC)
>Pushing Daisies (ABC)
>Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Fox)
I watched and liked four of the 5. But I liked T:TSCC the best.
>BEST SF LEAD ACTOR
>Michael Emerson as Ben Linus – Lost (ABC)
>Matthew Fox as Jack Shephard - Lost (ABC)
>Edward James Olmos as William Adama - Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi)
>Lee Pace as Ned - Pushing Daisies (ABC)
>David Tennant as the Doctor - Doctor Who (Sci Fi)
I pretty much flipped a coin between Lee Pace and David Tenant and Tennant
won (Eddie Olmos was third all the way)
>BEST SF LEAD ACTRESS
>Patricia Arquette as Allison Dubois – Medium (NBC)
>Evangeline Lilly as Kate Austen - Lost (ABC)
>Mary McDonnell as Laura Roslin - Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi)
>Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper – Torchwood (BBC America)
>Yvonne Strahovski as Sarah Walker - Chuck (NBC)
Yvonne Strahovski, not just because I love the way she vaults that counter
>BEST SF SUPPORTING ACTOR
>Naveen Andrews as Sayid Jarrah - Lost (ABC)
>Jack Coleman as Noah Bennet - Heroes (NBC)
>Henry Ian Cusick as Desmond Hume - Lost (ABC)
>Michael Hogan as Saul Tigh - Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi)
>Terry O'Quinn as John Locke - Lost (ABC)
Jack Coleman. The only problem with him as best supporting actor is that
he has the biggest continuing role on the series, He has more screen time
than Oka or Ventimiglia, who are probably the main candidates for 'lead
actor'
>BEST SF SUPPORTING ACTRESS
>Summer Glau as Cameron Phillips - Terminator: The Sarah Connor
>Chronicles (Fox)
>Tricia Helfer as Number Six/Caprica/Natalie - Battlestar Galactica
>(Sci Fi)
>Yunjin Kim as Sun Kwon - Lost (ABC)
>Elizabeth Mitchell as Juliet Burke - Lost (ABC)
>Katee Sackhoff as Kara "Starbuck" Thrace - Battlestar Galactica (Sci
>Fi)
Summer Glau. I'd probably take Ketee Sackhoff over Tricia Helfer among the
BSG girls (and I'd take Grace Park ahead of either of them)
>BEST SF GUEST ACTOR
>M.C. Gainey as Tom – Lost, recurring (ABC)
>Brian Austin Green as Derek Reese - Terminator: The Sarah Connor
>Chronicles, recurring (Fox)
>Ken Marino as Tony – Reaper, recurring (CW)
>James Marsters as John Hart – Torchwood, recurring (BBC America)
>Dean Stockwell as Brother Cavil - Battlestar Galactica, recurring (Sci
>Fi)
The fact that I voted for Brian Austin Green instead of James Marster
likely damages my Whedonista cred, but he did a better job. Actually, I
would also vote for Marino and Stockwell ahead of Marsters this year.
>BEST SF GUEST ACTRESS
>Kristen Bell as Elle Bishop – Heroes, recurring (NBC)
>Anjelica Huston as Cynthia Keener – Medium, recurring (NBC)
>Carey Mulligan as Sally Sparrow - Doctor Who, "Blink" (Sci Fi)
>Katee Sackhoff as Sarah Corvus - Bionic Woman, recurring (NBC)
>Sonya Walger as Penny Widmore – Lost, recurring (ABC)
Kristen Bell. The closest contender was Carey Mulligan
>BEST SF EPISODE
>Doctor Who, "Blink" (written by Steven Moffat, directed by Hettie
>Macdonald) (Sci Fi)
>Lost, "The Constant" (written by Carlton Cuse & Damon Lindelof,
>directed by Jack Bender) (ABC)
>Lost, "The Shape of Things to Come" (written by Brian K. Vaughan &
>Drew Goddard, directed by Jack Bender) (ABC)
>Lost, "There's No Place Like Home" (written by Damon Lindelof &
>Carlton Cuse, directed by Stephen Williams and Jack Bender) (ABC)
>Pushing Daisies, "Pie-lette" (written by Bryan Fuller, directed by
>Barry Sonnenfeld) (ABC)
My voting was simplified here, since three Lost eps made the final cut. I
just had to pick between Blink and Pie-lette. Ultimately, I went with
Pie-lette

If you're talking Trachtenberg, I liked it too. But it was a nothing
compared to Dudek's, who walks away with this category.

Not even - Michael Emerson and Terry O'Quinn have single-handedly
breathed life back into "Lost". (Though I like Tennant's performance,
it's not of the caliber of Emerson's.)

I also liked BAG's performance a lot. Go figure. (Ken Marino was

Even I'd concede that over GG - GG really ended season #1 with a weak
couple of episodes, wheres T:TSCC ended with its two strongest. No
contest.

If I were voting, it'd be a tough call between "Lost" and DH - I think
DH actually improved more (from what I've seen, which isn't
everything), but "Lost" is the better show, so... <shrugs>

There were a lot of turkeys this year, esp. on cable (see: MTV), but
I'd probably go with AI just because I want it to go away.

Well admitting that I've watched some episodes, and 'by default' means 'as
opposed to the other nominees'.

Did you notice that on 'best episode' I commented that 3 nominations for
Lost made it easier since I then only had to choose between the other two?

It would at least have to meet the 'I could stand to watch episodes' test,
which neither of the above do. Not even Nathan Fillion was enough to get
me to watch DH.

Burn Notice was on my nominations.
BTW, we have some serious RATTY business to conduct.
I think 'Worst Performer' needs to have a male and female category.
I say this not only because of the impossible tie between Caruso and
Harris this year, but because they're adding Isabelle to CSI: Horatio.
She's a shoe-in for the next round, but I don't want to have to not vote
for the H!
It also means I'll probaby vote for the H instead of the other H
(Harris) *this* time, simply because this may be Caruso's LAST chance to
win!
Yes, I agree. That way I could vote for both David Caruso and Paula
Abdul.

Why? Do you think Caruso's going to improve?

I suspect it's because he thinks "Isabel" will be that much
worse.
-- jayembee
It's a silly question, really - NO ONE is better than Caruso!! He puts
Hugh Laurie and Terry O'Quinn to shame!!1!111!!

I sorta had that feeling, too. I wanted to do write-in votes for
Torchwood and Pushing Daisies where there were egregious omissions.

(fist bump) Right on!
I'd have gone Caruso and Harris, but YMMV.

No, because Isabelle is going to be in CSI: Horatio. Not only will
Caruso not be the worst performer on TV, he won't even be the worst
performer on CSI:H!
For me, those would be the omissions of:
BEST COMEDY GUEST ACTRESS
(3 points): Sara Gilbert (The Big Bang Theory, Leslie Winkle, "The
Fuzzy Boots Corollary" & "The Bat Jar Conjecture")
BEST COMEDY EPISODE
(3 points): The Pancake Batter Anomaly (The Big Bang Theory) - Sheldon's
sick/PotA Marathon.
(2 points): The Bat Jar Conjecture (The Big Bang Theory) - Physics Bowl
(1 point): The Jerusalem Duality (The Big Bang Theory) - Dennis Kim
rattles Sheldon.
BEST PERFORMANCE, TV MOVIE/MINI-SERIES
(3 points): Neal McDonough (Tin Man, as Wyatt Cain)
BEST NEW SERIES
(3 points): The Big Bang Theory
>> I'm just expaining, here. Don't think that I'm pissed off at you in
>> any way, because I'm not. :-) I'm only pissed off at Warner
>> Brothers, TNT-Atlanta (May they burn in hell.), The Sci-Fi Channel

>
> (fist bump) Right on!
Wow, you didn't even call me on the accidental typo that is also a
spot-on, made-up word, double entente. (expaining)
I hereby nominate David Caruso to be The 11th Doctor Who!!
It will probably depend on how those categories do in terms of voting.
If most people vote in those categories, it might be worth splitting
those categories into male and female, but if a lot of people skip
them, it won't be. At any rate, please make sure to bring up these
issues next May when the preliminary discussion comes up.
As an alternative, another possibility I have considered is dividing
the Worst Performer category not by gender, but between Worst
Performer in an Acting Role and Worst Performer as Oneself.

That helps with this year's tie between David Caruso and Samantha
Harris, but not with next year's dead heat between Caruso and Isabel.
Perhaps we need "Worst performer on CSI: Horatio"
No, that still doesn't help.
How about "Worst performer on TV other than David Caruso"?
Sort of gives him a lifetime achievement award. Lord knows he deserves
it.
Okay, but you're not going to like what happens . . .
10 seconds after the Doctor regenerates into Caruso, he dies under the
immense weight of his Caruso-ness and immediately regenerates into . .
. Jimmy Smits.

Yeah. I'm thinking we need 'male and female' in both 'scripted and
reality'

Poor Mira- another former film star relegated to doing bad TV.
Count me as chagrined that I had to choose between Paul Giamatti
and Laura Linney. :-( I would definitely prefer separate male
and female categories for best acting in a miniseries.

Dude, the fact that you voted for T:TSCC in any category damages your
Whedonista cred immensely. Whether you voted against a Whedonista, as
in this category or *for* a Whedonista (Summer Glau) in another
category for T:TSCC.
C'mon? Terminator -- for anything? Seriously?!

PS: Not to say that I don't watch it and/or like it (I watch it and
like it), but heck, it isn't even equal to the nadir of the Buffyverse
-- the Cor/nor (Cordy/Connor) relationship yet. Gots a long way to go
to get to the just-okay-i-ness of Buffy s7 and a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnng way
to go to reach the heights of Firefly.
This is the final ballot for the 2007-2008 Ratty Awards for the

three days left to vote. Voting ends on Sunday, August 3, at 10 p.m.

I'll second that emphatically. "The Worst" is so much fun, and most
big pompous award shows are afraid to do it.
I personally wish there was a "worst" for every "best" category.
There are only two days left to vote in the 2007-2008 Ratty Awards.

So many choices, so little time. I don't think my bottom five even

Ditto. Samantha Harris actually should get some sort of "most
improved" award. If you didn't watch this season and are going on her
nasty performance last year, you're making a mistake -- she changed a
lot after the baby and made it all the way to "average".
Come to think of it, my choice for best guest actor would be Kenny
Maine who does a comedy ESPN parody on the awards shows. Very funny.

Well, I tend to hold Lost in that level of minimum high regard, but I'm

Terminator is good but this was a tough year. I liked BAG and JM but
after thinking about it I gave my vote to SF Guest Actor to Dean
Stockwell. I thought his work was better and since it went for a
longer time it allowed him more time to develop his character.
What I just don't get is the appeal of The Office over TBBT. I've tried
watching The Office several times, and for me, it has all the appeal of
watching paint dry or grass grow, much like the average economics
course. I'm a technical type (electrical engineer who always loved
physics and astronomy.), and if I *had* to become an MBA, I'd probably
slit my throat. I find The Office to be weak/thin and extremely
tedious. OTOH, I find myself watching TBBT reruns (I've probably seen
each episode three times by now.) just because I like the characters and
their interactions so much.

Oh. God damn, you're right. I just thought Ian couldn't act.

That absolutely *HAS* to be sarcasm, with an "<S>" forty feet tall.

You believe what you want to believe, son.
Ian (I'm going to go gather the evidence...)
Drop the condescension. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt
between sarcasm and just plain nuts.
Last year yes, but she showed a huge improvement after she had the
baby. She's still not as good as that Drew guy who replaced her, but
I think she's improved from "F" to "D".
She looks better, too. She apparently can't spend 2 hours in the
weight room any more. Or maybe she doesn't want steroids in the baby
milk.
You obviously didn't read that in the spirit it was written in.
You wanted Horatio, you got Horatio.

Are there nuts in a Kit Kat?
Mmmmm. Kit Kat...
Ah, sorry. I don't react well to Horatio.
It's hard to imagine she's BETTER this year, but I'll take your word for
it. I watched a few minutes, and stopped watching, mostly because of
her.
She was indeed awful. But if she was enough to make you turn it off,
it may not be your thing. Plus, I think Tom Bergeron is leaving.
>BEST COMEDY SERIES
>30 Rock (NBC)
>The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
>Desperate Housewives (ABC)
>How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
>The Office (NBC)
I like these noms. I'd replace _Desperate Housewives_ with _Weeds_,
but close enough. (Actually, I'd nominate _Weeds_ over _Desperate
Housewives_ for Best Dramedy Series. No, I'm not going to let it go.)
_The Big Bang Theory_.
>BEST COMEDY LEAD ACTOR
>Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy - 30 Rock (NBC)
>Steve Carell as Michael Scott - The Office (NBC)
>Johnny Galecki as Leonard Hofstadter - The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
>Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper - The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
>James Roday as Shawn Spencer – Psych (USA)
Jim Parsons, easy.
>BEST COMEDY LEAD ACTRESS
>Christina Applegate as Samantha Newly - Samantha Who? (ABC)
>Marcia Cross as Bree Hodge - Desperate Housewives (ABC)
>Tina Fey as Liz Lemon - 30 Rock (NBC)
>Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Christine Campbell - The New Adventures of Old
>Christine (CBS)
>Mary-Louise Parker as Nancy Botwin – Weeds (Showtime)
Mary-Louise Parker, easy.
>BEST DRAMA SERIES
>Damages (FX)
>Dexter (Showtime)
>Friday Night Lights (NBC)
>House (Fox)
>The Wire (HBO)
_Friday Night Lights_ was iffy last year. This year it has no business
in this category.
_Dexter_.
>BEST DRAMA SUPPORTING ACTRESS
>January Jones as Betty Draper - Mad Men (AMC)
>Leighton Meester as Blair Waldorf - Gossip Girl (CW)
>Adrianne Palicki as Tyra Collette - Friday Night Lights (NBC)
>Mia Wasikowska as Sophie - In Treatment (HBO)
>Natalie Zea as Karen Darling - Dirty Sexy Money (ABC)
This category is an unmitigated disaster. In a proper Drama
Supporting Actress category, the nominees would include actresses
on Showtime: this year Mia Kirshner, Jennifer Carpenter, and Julie
Benz.
>BEST SF SERIES
>Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi)
>Doctor Who (Sci Fi)
>Lost (ABC)
>Pushing Daisies (ABC)
>Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Fox)
I think there's too much nostalgia for _Doctor Who_. Among British
imports, I'd put it behind _Life on Mars_ and _Torchwood_.
_Lost_.
>BEST VARIETY SERIES/SPECIAL
>The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (CBS)
Wait, isn't _The Late Late Show_ a documentary?
>WORST PERFORMER ON TELEVISION

>Samantha Harris as herself - Dancing with the Stars (ABC)
>Howie Mandel as himself - Deal or No Deal (NBC)
>Donald Trump as himself – The Celebrity Apprentice (NBC)
All of these "as herself/himself"s are getting boring.

Bergeron was the only point of interest for me. We tried watching some
of it 'cause Mom liked Kristy Y. and I like Penn, but Harris was so
awful I couldn't stand it.
Hence the winner is: HORATIO!
Yay, another BBT fan!

Eh, Johnny's close, but I picked Jim Parsons, too. They're a good
pair.

LOL at the inside joke.

We really should have a WORST PERFORMER ON TELEVISION lifetime
achievement "award" for Caruso.

Hey, I suggested that weeks ago! But I accept your second.
