Brett Ratner claims he's officially "resigned" as producer of the 2012
Academy Awards ... after dropping the homophobic F-bomb at a media
event Sunday night.

Ratner -- best known for directing the "Rush Hour" movies -- was at a
fan Q&A session for "Tower Heist" Sunday when he told the crowd,
"Rehearsal is for f*gs."

Now, he's penned an open letter ... apologizing for the "hurtful and
stupid things I've said" ... and adding, "Having love in your heart
doesn’t count for much if what comes out of your mouth is ugly and
bigoted."

Ratner continued, "Being asked to help put on the Oscar show was the
proudest moment of my career. But as painful as this may be for me, it
would be worse if my association with the show were to be a
distraction from the Academy and the high ideals it represents."

Ratner says he's been in contact with GLAAD -- the Gay and Lesbian
Alliance Against Defamation -- and he promises he will work to
"increase awareness of the important and troubling issues this episode
has raised."

"I deeply regret my actions and I am determined to learn from this
experience."

Tom Sherak -- the President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences -- issued a statement saying, "[Brett] did the right thing
for the Academy and for himself."

He added, "Words have meaning, and they have consequences. Brett is a
good person, but his comments were unacceptable. We all hope this will
be an opportunity to raise awareness about the harm that is caused by
reckless and insensitive remarks, regardless of the intent."

It's going to be really awkward for the Academy when Ratner gets his
lifetime achievement award someday.

When these things happen, there is always more to the story. I'd be
real surprised if Ratner's use of the word "fag" was the only reason
he lost his Oscar producing gig. It might be a convenient "out" (no
pun intended). Ratner producing the Oscars was a terrible idea to
begin with.

Nope. What is the event if NOT a giant public relations effort for the

We apparently live in a world where only gay men can use the word 'fag' and
only black people can use the word 'nigger'...and where most of the rest of
the population thinks that double standard is acceptable.

> The further fact here is clearly illustrated in this very thread and all

Ceretainly, homophobia is alive and well...just look at the PTC folks and
the new attack on Glee...and all those in the newsgroups that agree with
them. Still, I'm having trouble seeing where Ratner's comment is
homophobic. Maybe someone could break down the statement word by word and
explain what exactly he was saying? Is he saying that it is gay to
practice/study? It seems like he was just trying to say that rehersing is
lame...and how many years do we have before the Americans with Disabilities
people step in and pronounce the word 'lame' to be just as hateful and
demand people resign from their entertainment jobs if they use it?

But, afaics, Ratner's public acknowledgment of his error carries
enough weight to genuinely demonstrate the unacceptability of his
phrase and to move away from a repeat of it. And the rest of his
forced display of contrition seems to me counterproductive corporeal
punishment. Imagine (as necessary) that you are gay, and consider

Phobia means an irrational fear of something harmless. People who say
'fag' don't have an irrational fear of faggots. They see faggots as
funny queers who fuck each other in the ass like retards. If someone
who says 'fag' is a 'homophobe', then someone who tells a Polack joke
is a Polakcophobe. Ridiculous.

But Brett should be happy. Oscars is run by a bunch of greedy Jewish

Some people need a group to persecute.
Language in itself can do no harm, but if used as a rallying cry for
such things as homophobia then it's the mass attacks with words that
seems to set off individual behaviour.
Let that situation develop, then a new culture of hatred and real attacks
can begin.
It's a many-headed hydra, and reducing the places where they can
express their phobias will find new victims and new excuses.

There Is a danger of overdoing the protests, and another of declaring
a no-forgiveness attitude.

Trying to find a way out by using logic or appealing to the better side
of humans seems futile, after reading some of the posts.

What YOU fail to comprehend is that freedom of speech extends both ways.
And any private company...in this case the Academy...has every right to

You have every right to be free to demonstrate your grotesque stupidity and

Everybody seems to want this - with different definitions of
"politically correct". When we perceive *our* group being
discriminated against we get angry.

Some people only get angry when it's their own group, but don't
understand why other groups want to be treated as well.

For instance, to Catholics, all Lutherans appear the same, but within
the Lutheran faith there are many variations (actually, "small
differences").

There are probably better examples, but that's the one I recall.

Should we even assume that he was being serious about not rehearsing rather
than making a joke? Still, how much rehearsing is needed for people to read
a lame bit of banter/quip off of cue cards followed by reading a list of
names, followed by clapping and stepping to the side while the person comes
up on stage to thank God, the Academy, and their mother for the shiny
trophy?

I don't know how it jibes with proper Latin, but I see 'phobia' in
this instance meaning "excessive emotional aversion". And it seems to
apply here in that Ratner, though immersed in a culture that has long
deprecated the (relatively useless) word 'fag', has nevertheless
anchored it to the foundation of his own everyday everywhere
lingo ...i.e., almost as though it were a talisman he needs to quell a
phobia.

I'm afraid of gay people. Also spiders and snakes.

Seriously, I remember Andy Rooney once said he had nothing against gay
people but he felt uncomfortable being around them. Somebody from
GLADD went to speak with him to tell him he had a problem. I imagine
he must have been thinking "Yes, yes, I know. Please go away."

Because a lot of your movie idols were sucking cock, getting fucked in
the ass, etc. when they weren't onset filming those tear jerker oldies
where they're trying to save Aunt May's farm from the evil bankers.

Why is "trotsky" obsessed with fecal matters?

Why are you a moron who struts around here wearing a tinfoil
"self-appointed moderator" badge?

Why does Ubi have such trouble understanding that anybody with a brain
is going to look at posts of his and "Rich's" as piles of shit?

Interestingly, though, I must be some kind of litmus test: Ubi complains
about posts referencing "fecal matters" and Thanny complains about
penises--kind of says more about them than me, doesn't it.

LOL! So you're now openly defending and supporting trotsky's constant
homophobic slurs, while claiming that anyone who takes issue with him is
'obsessed'.

Of course, using your own criteria, that makes you just as obsessed,
although I'm sure that as a good little lib, you've exempted yourself from
the standards by which you judge everyone else.

Neat trick, Barbie, if you can find anyone stupid enough to fall for it.
