On the day the liberation of Afghanistan began, I watched:

THE MILLIONAIRE:
A widow with a sin with chronic asthma receives a million dollars (worth
$8M in toiday's money) but gives it back after her new boyfriend tells
her that he left his previous one because she was rich. Ugh! How did our
mysterious benefactor know this would mess with her mind? I wasn't
impressed.

THE MILLIONAIRE:
A minister whose parish is in bad need of repair and whose son, who is
creating a pneumonia cure is preventing him from getting married
receives a million dollars. He immediately makes repairs to his parish,
gets his son a new laboratory, and pays for his wedding. Somehow, either
by accident or on purpose, the bride-to-be gets pnumonia, forcing the
son to use his cure that hasn't been approved by the FDA yet on his
finance and all is well. Hey! It's "Mrs C"!

THE MILLIONAIRE:
After receiving her million dollars, a waitress and friend go to Italy
to murder someone. Not! She travels across Europe and meets an Italian
count. Hey! It's Betty White!

THE MILLIONAIRE:
A bridegroom uses his million dollars to give his blind bride an eye
operation so she can see again but is scared she won;t like what she
sees. Hey! It's Charles Bronson!

BOB'S BURGERS:
"Full Bars". The kids go trick-or-treating on their own while their
parents attend Ted's party and decide to hit the rich neighborhood for
its better treats.

Burger of the day:
 Jack O' Lentil

Neighbors:
 All-Year Halloween Shop

Gene: "Mmmm. Taco on the toilet. Why doesnt everyone do this? AGHHH!"

Gene: "What just happened? How does this not topple your economy?"

Tina: "There's a lot of carrots in that stew."

Gene dressed up as "Queen Latifah from her U.N.I.T.Y. Phase", Louis
dressed upo as Edward Scissorhands, and Tina dressed up as a "mommy
mummy".

FAMILY GUY:
"Ratings Guy" Peter uses his influence as a Neilson Family member to
change TV shows.

AMERICAN DAD:
"Killer Vacation". While on a tropical vacation with his family, Stan
receives instructions to kill the activities director, who is an ex-war
criminal.

What did you watch?

THE SIMPSONS: Their annual Treehouse of Horror episode. I liked the bit
with the Mayan calendar and the bit with the black hole. The parody of the
Paranormal movies was lousy, but they at least offered up a daring twist at
the end. The time travel parody of Back to the Future was uninspiring and
the drawing of the car was so bad that I couldn't even tell if it was
supposed to be a Delorian or a Prius.

NASCAR: I only caught the end of this because I dislike plate racing. As
expected, there was a huge wreck at the end. The car that won (17 Kenseth),
made a lousy blocking move at the end that set up the wreck and certainly
made him undeserving of the win. Meanwhile, bad for NASCAR's ratings these
last few races, is the fact the DE Jr. is basically out of contention for
the championship already.

NFL: I caught a little bit of the 'Hyundai Sunday' game where the 0-4
Saints beat the 4-0 Chargers. Ian should have sacrificed more fembots..

It didn't look very interesting, but the closed captioning was spewing all sorts

I saw just the last few, starting with the Bronson one, where I guess
he's supposed to be hideously ugly like in a Twilight Zone ep? ... Jack
Lord being Gaslighted, Oscar Goldman seeking revenge, Rita Moreno being
cute beyond belief, Dennis Hopper being his typical icky self.

So how does this work exactly ... you get a check for a million bucks,
that the guy that gives it to you has 'negotiated' with IRS to make it
tax free, and you agree to give back either all the money or whatever
you haven't spent yet (his explanation of the rules varies) if you tell
anybody but your spouse the exact amount of the check or the exact
circumstances under which you received it. I don't know what details
you could blab about the circumstances other than the name of the guy
that gave it to you, but the amount ... how do you possibly bank a
cashier's check for a million dollars without telling somebody the
amount? And you're going to need to get an accountant and tell him not
only the amount but that it's in some miraculous way tax free. I really
don't see this working unless he gave you a box of money instead of a
check, and even then you're going to do some explaining to the
authorities at SOME point!

The Chargers were only 3-1; now they're 3-2. Which means the AFC West is
once again living down to everyone's low expectations... :(

This was a little better than last week but they should have done more
with the concept.

No time to go into everything so a few highlights:

Once Upon a Time - "We Are Both" This one focused heavily on Regina both
in the present and her backstory. As she tries to revive her magical
powers in Storybrooke, we see how she first learned magic in fairytale
land. There were some interesting revelations regarding Rumplestiltskin
and Regina that I didn't see coming. In particular, Rumplestiltskin has
been around much longer than I was previously aware of. I also loved
Rumple's bit in the mirror egging Regina on.

Misfits - "Episode Four" A new boy named Ollie joins the Misfits except
he doesn't really fit in (due to his lack of criminal proclivities) and
is promptly killed. His heart is transplanted into Nikki and she gains
Ollie's ability to teleport (in a funny earlier scene we see it's faster
to just walk than teleport). The villain of the week (whose backstory
is never explained) sees the world as if it was a Grand Theft Auto type
of video game and goes around killing people (like Ollie) as if life was
the game. The episode was pretty good but felt a little like filler.
It also seemed like there was about 5 minutes missing from the episode.

Dexter - "Sunshine and Frosty Swirl" Debra keeps an eye on Dexter to
try and keep him acting on his murderous urges while the mob tries to
track down what happened to their guy. OK episode.

The Victim (Netflix rental) - Michael Biehn wrote and directed this
thriller about a guy (Biehn) who lives in a house in the middle of the
woods. One night a woman runs to his front door begging for help
claiming some people are trying to kill her. But when her pursuers
later arrive they are cops claiming to be looking for a fugitive. It's
pretty much an exploitation film but it held my interest.

Pretty much just football:

NFL - The morning game was Kansas City vs. Baltimore - of course, KC
lost (in a really low scoring affair). The afternoon game Denver vs. New
England - Denver too lost.
The evening game was San Diego vs. New Orleans. The pathetic thing
about this game is that the Chargers actually dominated most of the
game. But they fell apart in the second half, and then turned in an
awful offensive effort in the last 2 minutes in which they needed to
score a touchdown to tie the game back up. Pathetic. >:/ (On the plus
side, 1st Round draft pick, RB Ryan Matthews finally proved his
worth...)

No Surrender (I think was the title...) (LMN) - Good Heavens! Even for
LMN/Lifetime, this flick was *weak sauce*. Mena Suvari stars as a former
battered wife who writes a newspaper advice column, then a blog, to
"empower women", etc. Soon enough, she's being stalked/harassed around
the same time, 1) she starts dating a "hunky" Italian architect
(blech!), and 2) her abusive ex-husband is paroled from jail... Blah
blah blah. This was really "Meh" - I didn't even make it to the ending
to find out who was stalking her (though I had my suspicions...).

Once Upon a Time - Mercifully, we were almost entirely spared Emma and
Snow in "Fairy Tale Land", and instead got the Evil Queen, Regina
(complete with more background flashbacks to flesh out how she became
EVOL!!1!), and her tussles with Mr. Gold and Charming, in Storybrook.
Oh, and if any of the fairy tale characters try to leave Storybrook,
they lose their Fairy Tale memories - so basically, still, no one can
leave. Anyway, I definitely preferred this episode to the season
premiere.

Revenge - This, OTOH, wasn't as good as the season premiere, as they've
fallen back on hitting Reset Buttons, and needlessly drawing things out.
There was an amusing sideplot in which a cheeky employee ("I'm your
accounting analyst...") of Nolan's named Padma chastises him for
neglecting his company - for her efforts, she gets promoted to CFO.
Meanwhile, "Cake" is sprung from rehab, loses her inheritance, and
then gets it back (from brother Daniel, who gives up his). Victoria
comes back from the dead (so, Conrad was in on it?! WTF??!!...). And
they waste James Morrison (shocker... :( ). Oh, and FauxAmanda is
really pregnant with Jack's baby, except evol FauxEmily told her she
isn't.
Meh.
P.S. What ever happened to Declan's hot potential new girlfriend from
the end of last season?! Much to my disgust, they've just dropped that
storyline without explanation... >:/

Recorded for later: The Mentalist, and 666 Park Avenue (of which I still
haven't viewed the pilot!...).

But a lot of them *wanted* to leave and tried. Although I wonder if
once they left the boundary, if they would have immediately turned
around. Things could get interesting down the road as various people
will probably be tossed out of the boundaries against their will as a
means of controlling them once their minds are wiped.

I liked the 666 Park Avenue pilot. Although from the comments, it seems
a lot of people didn't. I recommend giving the show a chance. Even if
you don't like the pilot, try the second episode too. It builds on the
pilot.

I'm not "ducking it", per se. It's just been a relatively low priority for me.

Which reminds me, I watched two other things over the weekend (that I wanted to clear off my DVR before sampling anything "new"...):

Saving Hope (recorded) - "Law of Contagion". This really pissed me off, actually - for some reason, NBC started this 10-20 minutes late, so my DVR recording didn't get to the end of the episode. Then to add insult to injury, those fuckers at NBC have apparently already pulled all the episodes of "Saving Hope" off NBC.com, so I couldn't even stream the end of this one (or the two unaired episodes) to see it!
I guess I'm done with this series. Thanks a lot, NBC! You assholes!!

Leverage (recorded) - The "season finale". Despite the fact that this episode focused on just my two least favorite characters (Nate and Sophie), this episode wasn't too bad. It wasn't as good as the preceding two episodes (the 'Parker' one, and the 'Eliot/Hardison/Parker fight terrorism' episode), but it was probably the 3rd best of this most recent season (which was a *dog*, outside of the last 3 episodes... :/ ).

Anyway, now that I've cleared out this old stuff, I can get to things like "666 Park Avenue" now.

EXPORTING RAYMOND -
A fairly good documentary about the producer of "Everybody Loves
Raymond" trying to get the show made in Russia. Of course, every writer,
studio executive and crew member has an idea of major changes that must be
made. It's even worse than the US, though, because they can all use the
claim that "you don't understand Russia/the Russian sense of humor".

Grade: B

ONCE UPON A TIME
I got a bit bored. I think the story is pretty good and the
acting is okay, I just have trouble getting invested in the characters,
other than Rumpelstilskin. The constant "you must marry X" business as
the underlying motivation is wearing thin.

Grade: B-

60 MINUTES -
So sorry they now have a formula that must include a fluffy
"personality" segment. There was one good segment, about an Italian
eyewear company you've probably never heard of, Luxottica, which now has a
near monopoly in the United States. That's right, they design and make
every named line of eyeglasses you've ever heard of, plus, they outright
own Sunglass Hut, LensCrafters, Pearle Optical, Ray-Ban, and a lot of
other companies.

Grade: B

BOARDWALK EMPIRE -
They have a solid mob-war plot building this season. Also, some
very nice action with Al Capone, a lot of it centering on his deaf son and
the impact the child had on his personality.
It looks like Nucky's brother is going to redeem himself.

Grade: A

More believable accounts state that Tony Stewart was the culprit.

<http://espn.go.com/racing/nascar/cup/story/_/id/8475556/matt-kenseth-avoids-25-car-pileup-win-talladega>

"Talladega delivered yet another "big one" Sunday, when defending NASCAR
champion Tony Stewart triggered a 25-car pileup as he tried to protect
the lead. His bid to block a long line of traffic on the last lap
backfired, and his car was sent sailing through the air in a chaotic
crash that collected 10 of the 12 title contenders.

Daytona 500 winner Matt Kenseth won under caution, and everyone else was
left wondering when NASCAR will do something dramatic to alter the
dangerous racing at restrictor- plate tracks.

"It's not safe. It's not. It's bloodthirsty," Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.
"If that's what people want, that's ridiculous."

Stewart, who assailed the wreckfests at Talladega with a sarcastic
diatribe in May, took full responsibility for creating the latest
carnage.

He had charged to the lead on the first lap of a two-lap sprint to the
finish, but got too far ahead of the pack to hang on to any drafting
partners.

Kenseth was charging on the outside of him and Michael Waltrip was
leading a line of traffic on the inside. Stewart was blocking all over
the track, and said he mistakenly chopped across the front of Waltrip's
car to trigger the accident.

The contact hooked Stewart to send him into a spin, and his car lifted
into the air and sailed on its roof and then on its side over several
other cars.

It created chaos through the pack, which was running three-wide in a
frantic dash to the finish.

"I just screwed up. I turned down and cut across Michael and crashed the
whole field," Stewart said. "It was my fault, blocking and trying to
stay where I was at.""

I'll take the word of Stewart that he was to blame over your notion that
Kenseth was the man responsible.

>NFL: I caught a little bit of the 'Hyundai Sunday' game where the 0-4

As noted elsewhere, the Chargers were 3-1 going into the contest.

They explained it (mostly) in thre first ep.
The Millionaire cuts you a check and pays what is due the IRS, so it's "tax
free". I wasn't clear about the non-disclosure part and how exactly it would
be enforced, but I guess you were expected to be discrete and NEVER tell
anyone the true source of the money , even tho he was snever named. I can't
recall if the proxy identified himself or not, but I have to assume you
couldn't blab his name either for the obvious reasons. It was an intriguing
concept but not very well done. In fact, it was hinted that The Millionaiore
liked to fuck around with people's minds and lives.

Last night I watched:
HAVEN: The Farmer
See rast posts

FRINGE: In Absentia
Mum is having a good influence on her daughter.
I agree with the poster who criticized Walter using
multiple tapes.

THE LISTENER: Ace in the Hole/Vanished
Second season episodes - still trying to catch up to
season 3.

This morning, Tue Oct 9,I have watched:

PERSON OF INTEREST: The Contingency
The fast tracking is a bit slow with this show.
I like Amy Acker even tho, as Root, she is ruthless in
this show. Reese is becoming almost unbelievable as a
super hero.
Already posts exist about the next episode which I won't
be aired till next Monday here.

THE MENTALIST: The Crimson Ticket
I know it was irritating to many here, but I miss Jane's
smile. He's become too serious IMO.

HAWAII 5-0: Kanalua (Doubt)
Nearly finished watching this episode & reading posts at
the same time.
I can multi-task with this show.

ugh.. That's really garbled. Looks like an obvious spelling error so
maybe they farmed out their closed captioning for the Simpsons to some
overseas company.

ONCE UPON A TIME (ABC, 7 PM) / We Are Both
[Regina continues to seek a way to regain her powers; David continues
his quest to find Mary Margaret and Emma; the seven dwarves discover
what happens when one of the townspeople tries to leave Storybrooke's
city limits.]

I realized for the first time that Sneezy is like a little John Byers of
THE X-FILES fame. I liked the random line drawn at the signpost leading
out of town. Given the concerns, I'd be more than slightly reluctant to
put that much trust in the person who planted the sign. I liked the
horndog doctor's question about whether the nuns were still nuns. Heh. I
liked that Regina got her kung fu back. I liked how everyone was driving
some three MPH on the way out of town and that they all left the passing
lane open so that Prince Charming could pass them all so easily. I liked
that we saw little of Mary Margaret and Emma. (I like the Emma
character, but I continue to feel that the actress would be better in
the role of a cheap truck stop hooker someplace in flyover country.) I
*didn't* like the almost complete absence of cute newcomer Mulan.

666 PARK AVENUE (ABC, 9 PM) / Murmurations
[Jane makes a terrifying discovery behind the walls of the Drake as she
renovates Mr. Barlow's apartment; Henry decides whether to give Gavin
inside information he has on one of his projects; lonely Danielle has a
romantic tryst.]

I'm really enjoying this show. It starts with a bit of the classic song,
"You Belong to Me," which is more than slightly appropriate, it would
seem. We also get two more blatant references to the fact that our young
couple is not married after getting one such blatant reference last
week. Clearly the writers have something in mind with all of it, but
they could try to be at least a little bit more subtle with the
foreshadowing. And was that laundry room dream a dream, or not? Did she
really go down there and get the laundry at that time, or did she maybe
get it earlier and just get confused over the timing? Who knows? I just
know that the whole barefoot thing was more than slightly gross to
contemplate. And I was *THRILLED* to get a version of the infamous
car-out-of-nowhere-on-an-otherwise-deserted-street that pasted the
exterminator dude. Bonus points for the next camera angle showing the
cab much closer to the body, even though the cab never backed up. Good
stuff. Heh. And we learn that no matter how desperate you may be, you
just don't want to date Danielle. Never, ever.

It depends on whether Sneezy's experiences were typical or not. If they
were, then everyone who crossed the boundary would simply lose their
memories of their fable pasts.

Agreed, and given that this is a show that skews female, I'm kind of
surprised that the writers aren't giving us more strong and independent
females. Maybe they suspect that their female audience is also one
that's much more into traditional roles than the average woman on the
street would be...

There was a lot you did like.
I liked the episode a bit better to give it a B+.
I mainly watch the show because of Robert Carlyle.

I have not read your comments, tho I have copied them, re
> 666 PARK AVENUE (ABC, 9 PM) / Murmurations

I really did not like the first episode which was aired
here without captions.
However, I have just found out they are going to air
episode 2 with captions tomorrow, Sunday October 14. So,
as I did see (& only that) you are enjoying the show, I'm
giving it another chance.

My fave was the nun line. Can't blame the guy; she's cute as can be. :)

Yeah, he's having a lot of fun with the role, obviously. And they're
giving him plenty of leash.

I'm never upset or offended if someone doesn't like a show that I like,
and I gave up on trying to convince people one way or the other long
ago. Still, there's nothing wrong with knowing that I've convinced
someone to give something a look, and that that look ended up creating
another fan. :)

Would you believe!
The 3rd episode came, without captions again, on our cable
channel. Don't ask me how, but I circumvented that.

So now I am watching the show & giving it an OK.
It's no worse than a lot of other shows I watch.
This 3rd episode was supposed to reference the movie "The
Shining" but as I did not see that movie...

I don't know what movie the next episode references, if
any.

Yes like Regina as we know her now is largely the making of
Rumpelstiltskin. Yes Regina chose to be bad since it was up to her,
but he guided her and had her savor the power of magic. One can say he
entrapped her.

Regina became like Cora, will Henry become like Regina? Regina seemed
to have shown some actual heart about letting Henry go with his
Grandfather.

Perhaps I am being a bit naive, but I didn't sense a ulterior
motive--except that maybe she will use the Prince as a stalking horse
to be able to get back to the Enchanted Forest. He would've been
distracted in trying to get his grandson back from Regina. This way he
will concentrate on getting the portal open.

BTW the makeup department did a pretty good job of making the younger
version of Regina seem more innocent and actually physically younger.
Regina is still the prettiest woman on the show with Snow a close
second.

That will be a great confrontation. I think Deb is eventually going to
help him with his kills. She has her own dark passenger revealed last
year she felt nothing when she killed a perp in the line of duty. Even
if it was in self defense and the guy deserved it most people will
feel guilt and remorse and/or shock in that situation, not nothing.

And I like the fact that Sgt. Doakes name is going to be cleared. I
hate it that everyone thinks he is a serial killer. It was heart
breaking to see that only (then) Lt. LaGuerta the only one at his
funeral.

That could be an interesting development. Sort of like Anakin's descent
to the Dark Side except actually getting to see it. But I doubt the
show will actually go there.
