Friday 10/10/08

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 7.73 million, ABC: 5.45, NBC: 5.13, Fox: 4.94, CW: 1.69

-Adults 18-49:
CBS: 2.2 rating/7 share, ABC: 1.8/ 6, Fox: 1.4/ 4, NBC: 1.3/ 4, CW:
0.7/ 2

--------------------

Note: Any prior rating results are based on the final nationals. Since
the level of DVR penetration has increased from 20 percent at this
same point last year to approximately 28 percent at present, the
overall results may be negatively impacted.

----------

-Friday’s Winners:
Ghost Whisperer (CBS), Numb3rs (CBS), 20/20 (ABC)

-Disappointing:
The Ex List (CBS)

-Friday’s Losers (excluding repeats):
America’s Toughest Jobs (NBC), Wife Swap (ABC), Everybody Hates Chris
(CW), The Game (CW), Don’t Forget the Lyrics (Fox), Life (NBC)

----------

-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS remains the network to beat on Friday, with a first-place finish
in both total viewers and adults 18-49. But dominating with under 8
million viewers and a mere 2.2 rating/7 share among adults 18-49 is
nothing to boast about. ABC finished in the distant No. 2 spot, while
last-place the CW, once home to Friday Night Smackdown!, is feeling
the pain without it.

CBS mainstay Ghost Whisperer kicked-off the evening on a winning note,
with 9.45 million viewers and a 2.6 rating/9 share among adults 18-49
from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, that was the most-watched show and highest
rated for the evening in the demo. And Ghost Whisperer actually built
from it’s year-ago performance (Viewers: 8.90 million; A18-49: 2.4/ 8
on Oct. 12, 2007) by 550,000 viewers and eight percent among adults
18-9.

Tied for second in the 8 p.m. hour was Fox’s Are You Smarter Than a
5th Grader? (which featured Jeopardy champ Ken Jennings) and ABC’s
relocated Wife Swap. Take a look:

Friday 8 p.m.
Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (Fox)
Viewers: 5.79 million (#2), A18-49: 1.4/ 5 (#3)

Wife Swap (ABC)
Viewers: 4.28 million (#3), A18-49: 1.5/ 5 (#2)

Considering Fox’s problems on Thursday, the network would benefit if
it moved Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? back to the evening. Also
leading off Friday was NBC’s Saturday bound America’s Toughest Jobs
(Viewers: #4, 3.95 million; A18-49: #4, 1.2/ 4), and the CW’s fading
Friday combination of Every Hates Chris (Viewers: #5, 1.76 million;
A18-49: #5, 0.7/ 3) and The Game (Viewers: #5, 1.90 million; A18-49:
#5, 0.8/ 3). Smackdown!...you are missed!

NBC’s diluted Deal or No Deal was the most-watched show at 9 p.m., but
week two of CBS’ goofy The Ex List was first among adults 18-49. Take
a look:

Friday 9 p.m.
Deal or No Deal (NBC)
Viewers: 6.52 million (#1), A18-49: 1.5/ 5 (#3)

The Ex List (CBS)
Viewers: 5.71 million (#2), A18-49: 1.9/ 6 (#1)

One week earlier, The Ex List debuted with 6.79 million viewers and a
2.0/ 6 among adults 18-49. And one year earlier, former failed
occupant Moonlight averaged a stronger 7.10 million viewers and a 2.0/
6 in the demo. All and all, I would call The Ex List a disappointment,
would you?

ABC’s relocated Superanny (Viewers: #3, 5.02 million; A18-49: #2, 1.8/
6) got some mileage in the 9 p.m. hour, building from lead-in Wife
Swap by 740,000 viewers and 20 percent in the demo. But Fox’s Don’t
Forget the Lyrics, which should also return to Thursday, remained out
of the competitive loop with a fourth-place finish in both total
viewers (4.87 million) and adults 18-49 (1.4’/ 5). Capping of the CW’s
very weak Friday was an encore telecast of America’s Next Top Model at
a last-place 1.42 million viewers and a 0.6/ 2 in the demo.

At 10 p.m., CBS’ veteran Numb3rs and ABC’s 20/20, featuring an
interview with Christie Brinkley’s ex-husband Peter Cook, share top-
rated honors, as follows:

Friday 10 p.m.
Numb3rs (CBS)
Viewers: 8.03 million (#1), A18-49: 2.2/ 7 (#1t)

20/20 (ABC)
Viewers: 7.03 million (#2), A18-49: 2.2/ 7 (#1t)

Although both hours deserve kudos for building from their lead-ins,
one year earlier Numb3rs was stronger at 9.16 million viewers and a
2.5/ 8 among adults 18-49 (on Oct. 12, 2007). Finishing third was
troubled NBC drama Life at just 4.92 million viewers and a 1.4/ 4 in
the demo. Am I the only one wondering why NBC even bothered bringing
Life back?

As a longtime fan of Numb3rs, I couldn't agree more!!! This bad lead-in is
killing me!

Considering the 9 p.m. slot lost 3.74 million viewers out the the 8 p.m.
spot, and Numb3rs brought back 2.32 million? That's pretty good in my
books; not great, but good.

Then again, what do I know? ;-)

I just don't get why they'd stick a chick show between two shows that
can grab guys.

And not just a chick show, but a *not particularly good* chick show!
I saw some of it last night, and it was not compelling by any
stretch.

Indeed. I record it only because I'm maxed out on my Timer Recording
slots, and so going 8pm-11PM gets me both Ghost Whisperer and NUMB3RS.
I skip over The Ex List on playback.

one has figured out how to kill yet."

Actually, Galen was wrong. TNT killed 99% of all hope for Crusade in
1999. Then, Warner Brothers and The Sci-Fi Channel came along and
killed the remaining 1% sometime in 2001.

Heh, yeah, I remember doing that.

I think DVRs have unlimited recording slots.

THE EX LIST is designed to keep the female demo that's also into (romantic)
fantasy that presumably currently watch GHOST WHISPERER and watched
MOONLIGHT.
