So long as she makes rookie mistakes, she'll always be a rookie, no matter
what the official categorization is.

They got some new rookies tonight.

And Wm. Shatner!

But there are new rookies so the name still applies.

Are they as good looking as Charlotte Sullivan and Missy Peregrym?!
'Cos, if not, there's gonna be some upset people around here!!!

I suppose if you are into guys, then yes. ;)

Though the new guy is a four year military vet that was on the front
lines so he's not the same as our rookies. He's more likely to make
mistakes in either not knowing procedures or being too quick to act.
Such as diving 40 ft into the water to chase down a suspect.

How many years was DiNozzo calling McGee "probie"? In fact, Mike Franks
continue to call Gibbs "probie" until (and even after) his death.

So if Gibbs can be a probie when he's in charge of NCIS, Andy can be a
rookie for a while, too.

Didn't NYC 22 already do the vet becomes rookie thing?

That's another way of viewing it, relative time rather than capability or
a fixed period of rookie-hood. So the day you start working, you become
an "oldtimer" compared to anyone who comes later. Which means you'll
always be a "rookie" to someone who has a longer tenure.

Maybe, maybe not. When Ziva became an official agent, DiNozzo decided
that it was time to stop calling McGee "probie", he instead called her
that for a while. So for Tony, it refers to the newest agent, not their
standing relative to him.

But someone else might choose to use terms like these to refer to
abilities -- they'll call you "rookie" as long as you keep making rookie
mistakes.

They addressed that on NCIS before JLC ruined it; you always call your
probie probie.

So we're all agreed that Clod is as stupid as Charlie Sheen?

Yes, Tony's status is different than Gibbs; McProbie isn't Tony's
Probie, he's Gibb's Probie. Of course there's a problem here - they
should ALL be 'Probie' to Gibbs. Forever.

Hmm, I haven't watched an episode in a few weeks but I don't recall a
vet rookie on NYC22. There's a journalist turned rookie cop, and a
football player turned rookie cop. Oh wait, yes.. Leelee Sobieski's
character is supposed to be a vet. I had forgotten that.

In any case both shows were probably being written and filmed about
the same time so it's not likely one copied the other.

FTR, "Flashpoint" (Canada's *other* cop show) opened with a vet as the
team rookie in the pilot (and this was several years ago now), so this
isn't a particularly new idea...

the Flashpoint team.

In terms of realism, I gather that SWAT teams are considered the elite in
many police forces so it seems unlikely that they'd let a rookie police
officer join them. More likely, you'd have to work your way up from beat cop
to the SWAT team, even if you had military experience. And to be a beat cop
you'd at least have to do the standard training in a police academy, which I
gather typically takes a year. I wonder what would happen in the real world
if a real-life Special Forces type tried to join a police SWAT team
directly? Would they go for that? You'd think someone from Seal Team Six,
for example, would get some special consideration given the known difficulty
of their training.
