Syfy's 'Sanctuary' Will Not Return for Season 5
by Philiana Ng

Syfy has pulled the plug on Sanctuary.

The sci-fi drama led by Stargate alum Amanda Tapping will not return
for a fifth season, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed.

"We’re honored to have been part of this incredible series. In
addition to garnering unmatched devotion by fans worldwide, Sanctuary
was a bona fide trailblazer, setting new standards with its highly
innovative production techniques – including pioneering green screen
and RED camera technology – and Emmy-nominated visual effects," said
Mark Stern, president, Syfy original content and co-head, UCP.

"It’s been an amazing ride and we look forward to our next project
with Amanda Tapping, Martin Wood and Damian Kindler," the statement
continued.

Tapping took to Twitter on Monday afternoon to address the series'
fans and thank them for their support: "To all the fans of
@SanctuarySeries we love and adore you. Thank you for the love and
support. Now to the long dark tea time of my soul. :("

Sanctuary wrapped its 13-episode fourth season in December.

Sad to see it go. It wasn't the best of television but it did
entertain at times. More importantly some of the actors delivered
performances that were much better than the material they had to deal
with. Will miss Big E.

Is there any way for it to continue elsewhere, given its low production
costs, at least aside from the actors' salaries?

Actually, that final scene of the last season would have been a fine
series ender, if they'd just included Carter's daughter.

I wish it had ended three seasons ago.

Nope. Otherwise it wouldn't have been cancelled. The finale aired last
December, so they had waaaay more than enough time to find a new home
and/or funding. Since the show was Martin Wood & Amanda Tapping's
baby, the fact that she and the cast are now saying their final thanks
to the fans via Facebook and Twitter means that they've done all they
could.

It would have been even cooler if it had included Magnus's daughter.

Ba dump bump crash

Did Carter have a daughter? They ripped off so many plots from other shows,
she must have had an alien baby in one episode or another.

No - when Doyle died.

It wasn't a bad show when it was on-line. The second Syfy got hold of it
as a nice cheapo show, it lost its charm.

Any one know what the initial plan was? Was the on-line original
purposely a pilot? Or was it really an on-line project that "got lucky"?
If it really was an on-line project, then there really is no reason not
to carry on on-line.

I recall when it started it was an online project. Or so it claim.
Maybe it was a subtle attempt at a pilot. Who knows.

But... which would you continue online? The webseries or the TV show?

And thus the very last, barely-with-a-pulse reason to ever tune in
this channel. Once it got twenty hours a month of my time.

Sad.

Sanctuary was only on 4 seasons? I stopped watching after season 2 and
that feels like it was much longer than 2 years ago.

I kept watching...but I found myself just wanting each episode to be over.
If Person of Interest is the fastest hour of TV, then Sanctuary had to be
the longest. The plots were just plodding along. Few surprises...and I
just didn't "care" much about the characters any more. I'm afraid this was
inevitable. Could have (should have) been much better.

Yup, that is how I remember it too.

I suppose, in a way, it was exactly that. My question should really be
who funded it, and / or was there some sort of studio nod?

> Who knows.

When I origionally asked, I was wondering if there was a "truth" about
this that every one else knew, but I had missed.

>
> But... which would you continue online? The webseries or the TV show?

Ah, well I didn't watch the TV series, so I had no idea the two had
different plots as you imply.

To explain: I heard about the show before it appeared, and followed it
because I wanted to support the idea of an independent on line show, and
I like the fact that it had a AT involved. Not "fan" thing, I like the
fact that some one with her CV was willing to get involved at that
level. I was willing and quite happy to ignore quality issues due to
costs. But the genre is normally not my thing. I had a quick look at the
TV show, and I didn't think it stepped up enough quality wise, and well,
I wasn't up for the genre any way, so I never bothered with it.

With all that in mind, I guess I would continue the on line series. But
again, I would be more interested in seeing what could be sustained by a
web series.

Yes, because we all know that shows with unmatched fan devotion get
cancelled every day. Heh. I love spin. Spin is funny.

My understanding was it was funded my viewer donation. More viewers,
more donations, more episodes...

I didn't follow enough to know.

I can tell you watching the first webisode and the TV pilot which
remade it is weird.

They had (partially) different casts and things. I really only saw
the first ep of both, so I can't say for sure.

That's not possible. I just read in a press release that SANCTUARY has
unmatched fan devotion, and I know for a fact that no one ever lies or
spins in a press release.
