What was the difference between these two shows? Were they pretty much the
same?

Twilight Zone was far superior, while Night Gallery was, well, lame.

TZ was more science fictiony. NG was more supernatural and horror. TZ was
far superior, imo.

Twilight Zone was dark to the point of being depressing, so it was
effective. Night Gallery (after a superb pilot film) was just ok.
Better was the last incarnation of "The Outer Limits."

Twillight Zone was the superior show. Though I don;t see them as alike
enough to really compare them. Rod Serling had done an amzing run with the
Twillight Zone, even lasting the infamous hour long episode season to make a
slight comeback.

The network wanted a new show from Serling. He wanted to do the edgier stuff
he couldn;t do and they wanted a show that was to originally be called Rod
Serlings Witches, Werewolves, and ____. not sure of the exact title here.

Anyway once Serling realized that the scripts he gave them were being
butchered and they basically treated him horribly because they had him
locked into a contract he did the openings and felt pretty sad about the
whole thing.

Night Gallery has a few good episodes despite what the network tried.

I'll think of getting the box set down the road but it's iffy. Unless the
series is ultra cheap dvd boxset I will have to let that one pass way too
many good sets coming out.

What about ONE STEP BEYOND was that one any good?

"One Step Beyond" (aka Alcoa Presents) was an excellent
series which predated Twilight Zone, etc. It was the first
TV series about the supernatural and had many great and
memorable episodes, not to mention a very haunting
soundtrack. It was a totally original, often-imitated series.

Coming to American fans *finally* in the next couple of
weeks - a dvd set of Raold Dahl's series Tales of the
Unexpected, another excellently creepy show. I've been
waiting for that one a long time!

TZ was in black & white, Night Gallery was in color. This gave
TZ a crisp, clear look that went well with the crisply told stories. Night
Gallery had a muddy look that matched the muddled stories.

There was another show that was on ABC in late 60s called Journey Into Unknown
or Journey Into Darkness. I believe it was British horror anthology series
---- it completely succeeded in creeping me out when I was a kid. Night
Gallery could not touch it.

Warlocks (serious answer -- that's the title of a book collection of
Serling stories).

You don't mean Tales of the unexpected?

No, this was way before Tales of the Unexpected. This was a network show, on
ABC, late 60s. I don't know why I remember it so vividly because it was
cancelled midseason and I was pretty young, but it was an hour long series that
stuck with me.

I have all seventeen episodes of that series. Creepy, eerie, and sometimes just
plain silly and predictable. Still a great series from the Hammer studios

Just about the only thing the two shows had in common was Rod Serling as host!

The Twilight Zone was mostly fantasy and science fiction. The Night Gallery
was horror and the supernatural and for the most part, the stories just
weren't as good.

IIRC, Serling was proud of his half hour TZs and everything after
that was a contractural obligation.

That's the common wisdom, and I confess it's what I thought... until I
looked into it a bit closer:

"In Marc Scott Zicree’s critical overview of the series, The Twilight
Zone Companion, one can find an objective verification of Serling’s
analysis. On a story-by-story basis, Night Gallery’s success rate is
fully equal to Serling’s estimation of The Twilight Zone. Yet Gallery
is still too often overlooked, lost in the shadows of its predecessor."

Season 4 was one-hour shows, and many of them do feel flabby. Season
5 went back to half hours. Seasons 1, 2, 3, and 5 (not 4) are
available on Amazon Instant Video, free to Prime subscribers. From
that difference I infer that the ownership of 1-2-3-5 was different
from 4.

The Night Gallery episode with Godfrey Cambridge
as the funniest man in the world wasn't very good.
His green suit was the only thing funny.

A good episode was the hippie going to hell.
Hell for the hippie is a living room with affable
old people showing vacation slides.

Hippie: "You mean *this* is hell?"

Elder: "Your stay in Hell is an eternity here in
this room. Funny, to some people this same place
is heavan".

Then the agonized groans of the hippie...

Well, Serling was contractually obliged to put his name on Night
Gallery... It was crap and he knew it.
