Dick's mother, a 22-year-old prostitute, died giving birth to him. He

I know she was his step mother but I used mother as a short hand since
she has raised him since sortly after he was born. Dick didn't know
anyone else as mother personally.

And Abigail took her resentment out on poor Dick with a vengence,
leading in part at least to Don hatred of prostitutes even as he use
them and supply them to clients and also his desire to rescue Joan.

That sentence should've been:
"His possible rape by one, Aimee, was a contributing factor since it
was shown so prominently, especially since Don got beat for it by his
step mother who hated prostitutes."

That's what Dick was told, and he has an elaborate visual imagination as

to how it all happened, but people notoriously lie to children about
their origins when scandal is involved. I won't be certain about the
story of Dick's origins until they show us his birth certificate and
his mother's death certificate. I especially have to wonder how a
working prostitute could be certain which of her johns was the father of
her baby, and given the lack of certainty in such a situation, fathers
were generally inclined to deny paternity.

and Dick showed up at the brothel. The guy in charge of the brothel was
Mack Johnson (that's how the character is listed in the closing
credits), whom Dick and Adam were taught to call "Uncle Mack." Adam
said Uncle Mack was dead too back in the first season (1960), but I
don't think he said how Mack died, just that he took Abigail's death
hard, so Abigail had to have died first.
