The AT&T Family Talk with Rollover cellular plan commercials have been a
terrific ad campaign. They make the key points about the product, "Saving
minutes saves money," and sell it with humor that hits very close to
home. I love the mother and teenage son arguing about rollover minutes,
both of them glaring at each other, both rolling their eyes. The two
actors must have had a hard time to keep from cracking up.

Is that the family with the nutcase mother where the rest of the family
is trying to ditch their old minutes, and she wants them to use them?
It's interesting that they're playing her as more and more psychotic as
the series goes on.

None of you has ever had an absurd argument with a teenager? Just
substitute "take out the trash" or "do the dishes". This is barely parody.

The actress was on an episode of "The Unusuals", as part of the couple
whose apartment was used for making porn movies. The IMDB says it's
Geneva Carr: <http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1417931/>

Maybe all parenting should be done with a gun...or at least a club and a
whip.
I don't see her characters as psychotic. She is just stuck with being the
voice of reason and being surrounded by unreasonable people.

Agreed, those commercials are funny.
Another fairly good campaign is the Verizon commercials (these 10million
sprinkles represent the other people you can call for free and the dead zone
commercials). During last week's NASCAR race I finally saw the commercial I
had been waiting for: it featured an Alltel building with the Alltel sign
being pulled off the top and replaced by a Verizon sign. They even had the
'Chad' having to stand there and watch it happen. Who's laughing now, Chad?

The only good commercial is a dead commercial.

Right, but the series started out with the kid being wasteful and the
mom somewhat reasonable, and they've shifted to where the whole family
is mocking and/or wary of her, and what he said about the gun.

Yeah, that was great. That's when the father sided with the kids,
because the mother has lost it.

You pay and pay and pay to get cable, and what do you get?
Lots of annoying commercials!
Doesn't the fee you pay for cable buy you anything,
like fewer commercials?

Now that digital tv is here, and the stations' range
is down to 35 to 40 miles, cable/satellite is the
only way to get more than a few stations!

The major network stations are mostly out of range
in my area. Will the networks allow the building
of more affiliates with the shorter range of
over-the-air reception? More TV translators?

That limit is only for line-of-sight reception. With decent equipment it's
possible to receive from further away, provided the station is transmitting
a strong enough signal.

Nope. Cable TV advertising rates are much lower than broadcast
networks, so they need more commercials AND subscription fees to pay for
the shows.

Maybe what it also buys us is that niche shows with smaller audiences
stay on the air.

She had a part in the final Unusuals episode. It was very small, but
it was a pretty good role.

There are two versions of that type of ad. One has the 2 red-headed daughters who tell him to get his hair coloured, "Because it's time" for daddy to be happy. That's the JFM ad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z03SEPGC_EA&feature=related

Then there is the one with the dad with 3 daughters, I think 1 is red-headed, one is sandy brown w/ glasses, and they are talking a lot on the phone with all their new minutes, which is for the cellphone ad.

I can't find a youtube of it because I don't remember the brand. But I thought that they did mention it.

Oh yeah, it is for the Fave Five or something. I got it confused with
the one where the two daughters tell their dad he would be a great

I thought it was cute, the first time I saw it, but it got annoying

I remember this because the super delicious guy is also the evil detective
Rick from Damages (it was weird to see him not being evil). IMDB knows him:
David Costabile. And there are comments there about this commercial. One of
them points to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFaCMUGq79k
