BRAVO EMBARKS ON THE FIRST EVER HISTORY OF ANIMATION -- ‘THE ANIMATED
CENTURY’
TWO HOUR ANIMATED DOCUMENTARY PREMIERES SEPTEMBER 26TH AT 8:00PM
“This is a terrific, entertaining, intelligent history of the animated
film. From the earliest scratchings to the latest computer graphics,
this fascinating story tells it all.” - Ken Burns
New York, NY - September 10, 2003 - For the past 100 years, animated
films have evolved from Disney shorts, to Japanese anime to computer
animated blockbusters. On Friday, September 26 at 8:00pm (8-10), Bravo
presents “The Animated Century,” a two-hour documentary delving into
the history of animation worldwide.
This unique documentary features the newly created animated hosts
Professor Edward Arlington Elderberry, his turtle Tatiana and his
cartoon-crazed disciple Horace, who introduce clips from the most
significant animated films of the past century. Horace, Tatiana and
Elderberry were created by the celebrated independent animator, Bill
Plympton and were animated by the award winning, Konstantin Bronzit in
St. Petersburg, Russia.
“The Animated Century” takes viewers on a wild ride through 100 years
of animation. Utilizing clips of more than 160 films from 26 different
countries, dating back to the early 1900s, including a dozen Oscar
winners. From the first animated film, “Humorous Phases of Funny
Faces,” to “Felix the Cat” to “Mickey Mouse,” “The Animated Century”
not only demonstrates how animation in film has evolved, but the
origins of the magic of the art form. Elderberry also demonstrates
different styles of animation, including pin screen, cutout and
European abstract animation, rotoscope, pixillation and sand
animation, and more advanced techniques, including the emergence of
Technicolor and ,later, computer animation.
Animated heroes, animation’s role in political persuasion and animated
anti-war satires are all covered. From Emile Reynaud and Winsor
McCay’s early works, to Fleischer, Willis O’Brien, Walt Disney, and
Warner Brothers in the United States, we see clips from historically
important films from every continent.
“The Animated Century” was written and directed by Adam Snyder and
Irina Margolina and is a co-production between Rembrandt Films in the
United States, Studio MIR and Pro-Klass in Moscow, and Avrora Media in
Germany, in association with Bravo. The film is produced by Adam
Snyder for Rembrandt, Irina Margolina for Studio Mir, Sergey Zernov
for Pro-Klass and Alexander Buchman for Avrora Media. Charles
Derbyshire and Ian Levy are executive producers for Bravo.
