I ran across a bit about that while I was looking up the other stuff.
Jack had celebrated earlier birthdays on his show, and they'd done 36
and 37 and so on. When they got to 40, though, they realized that 40
wasn't a funny number. They came up with some business about a dispute
concerning Jack's actual age, and that he might have been born a year
earlier than he thought, so Jack calls Rochester at home to look for
his birth certificate. Rochester says he found it, but he can't read
the date of birth. Jack says why not? Because it's been erased so
often there's a hole in it, says Rochester.
And, after that, they left Jack's age at 39.
