[re who Red John might be]

No, strategically -- from a writing point of view -- I think it'd be too
contrived for him to be it. Minelli also would have been far too
conspicuous wandering the halls of the lockup disguised as a
guard to pull off the hit.
Probably Itzin's contract was up after they used him for mostly
the early episodes this season. Minelli was a decent supporting
character, and they also killed off Bosco just as I was getting
to like him. But really this reinforces the five main players and
I think that's the right decision -- base the show around Jane,
Lisbon, Cho, Rigsby and Van Pelt.

No, I think that was genuine Red John and it wasn't anyone that
the viewers are familiar with, i.e. not Minelli for example. He had
to be basically hiding in plain sight, obscure and unrecognizable to
others in the vicinity, rather than conspicuous as Minelli would've
been. Maybe he incapacitated another real guard and took on his
identity just for this "hit". She smiles because she thinks he has
some plan to rescue her but instead he kills her.
Since Red John's backstory runs at least nine years, it's easy to
see maybe three Red John eps a season from here on in, one in
each ratings sweeps month (November, February, May). The
series has already pre-sold in syndication and is guaranteed at
least 5 to 7 seasons. Then make it like The Fugitive and in the
last episode the series arc gets resolved. Ratings will probably
be huge. Red John gets stunt cast with a big name actor. The
big question, and writing decision, is how Red John dies. :-)

Oh, c'mon Kal. Nobody ordered that many episodes. Nobody puts up that much
money well in advance of production. And second-run syndication deals don't
require 5 season minimums.

I agree. I can't see Minelli as Red John. My guess is he will turn out
to be someone we haven't seen yet.
There is no reason a CHiP couldn't have been there, and not be
immediately recognizable to agents of the CBI. There have been other
episodes where the uniforms are all over the place (whether they are
in real life or not being irrelevant) within the building.
Considering her visual response, and the fact that RJ isn't a stupid
serial killer (meaning she would not know any other DRJ, because it
would have broken his hold, only *she* was good enough for him to
trust), it had to be him.
