Day 287 of the "no grouchy usenet posts" project
Remember, when you point your finger at someone, there are three
fingers pointing back at you.
They're creepy and they're kooky,
Mysterious and spooky,
They're all together ooky,
Buy M&Ms!!!
(this would also be a good theme song for a tv show, I think)
I am able to do so with three fingers pointing off to the side.

Oh, wait...

Actually, I think a show featuring the M&Ms would make for wonderful
primetime programming. They could have the tall, dumb , Yellow guy
constantly saying the wrong thing because he simply isn't very
bright. They could have the short, smart-alleck Red guy constantly
scheming, but failing because he can't get anyone to follow his
directions. They could have the super hot looking Green gal turning
all the boys heads and making lots of horny comments. They could have
the quiet, Blue guy keeping everyone calm when he makes his rather
rare appearances. Hey, they could even fill the supporting cast with
the less appealing wannabee leading characters that aren't nuts
inside.
Sounds like the fourth straight winner for Jon Lovitz (after "SNL,"
"The Critic" and "Newsradio"). When is he getting inducted into the TV
Hall of Fame?
Or so he has everyone fooled.
On this show, he can be a guest star at best; perhaps playing a Milk

Get a newsreader that can filter cross-posted newsgroups. Add the
persistent trolls and troll-feeders to the killfile. That takes care of
most of the problem. There's very little reason to use something like
OE when there are many free alternatives that do a better job in just
about every way.

Day 288 of the "no grouchy usenet posts" project
Sometimes it feels like the room is filled with crazed chimps who are
intent on throwing their shit everywhere, until every square inch of the
room is completely coated with dung. With all of the OT posts, by the
right and left wing nuts, .... the political, racist, vile posts
(pro-white/anti-white, pro-black/anti-black, pro-Hispanic/anti-Hispanic,
pro-straight/anti-straight, pro-gay/anti-gay, etc.), it's like the nuts
have been let loose and they're in charge of the insane asylum. The
killfile is getting huge, and they keep changing their IDs.
Then, you have idiots/trolls (some of whom you've blocked but who manage
to /slither/ past the blocks now and then.) who pseudo-quote you,
*changing* *your* *words* , making it look like you said something that
you *didn't* .
Then, you have *legit* *people* (e.g. Peachy) who reply to the
aforementioned idiots and trolls, quoting their shit...... Sometimes it
feels like it's too much trouble, wading through the sea of shit, just
to get to the few on-topic, good posts that *are* here.
Then again, you hate to let the assholes win. Hey, I'm conflicted.
<shrug>
...but you have to keep after them because the trolls keep changing
their IDs.
Yes and no. In many cases, they use the same IP address (or at least
addresses from the same subblock) time after time, so if you filter
for that, you can get rid of some of their cowardly nym-changing.
Unfortunately, some news servers don't insert an originating IP
address, so in that case, yeah, you have to play whack-a-mole
every time a new nym pops up.

If you killfile via crossposting from certain newsgroups (e.g. any of
the political newsgroups, alt.tv.game-shows, etc.), that will definitely
take out most of the trolls like Clay, nym-changing or no. It may not
take out numbskulls like Trotsky (the ones who actually hang-out
in/originate from rec.arts.tv). But it definitely takes out people like
Clay and his ilk.

MTNewswatcher lets me color code posts by various attributes. For
instance, anything by you (and a couple dozen other people) pops up red
(or other colors) and I know I want to read it. My own posts pop up
blue and I can tell at a glance if it's a thread I'm active in and if
there's a reply after the last time I posted. Most of the nasty troll
stuff is KF'd and doesn't show up at all, and all the rest shows up
default black and I look through it at my leisure.

Not really. Most of the worst are pretty consistent about their IDs. A
few I had to create a filter for rather than just the killfile (which
uses both the nym and the email address).
You can make objections, but I'm telling you that with a few filters
for cross-postings and some killfile, I have nearly eliminated the
problem. Rather than argue, I'd suggest trying it.

That's not pointing, it's waving.
I hate to burst your bubble, but OE has a kill file that does both those
things. It's problems are legion, but this isn't one of them.
IDs? They keep changing their e-mail addresses, even their ISPs. It's a
mark of the troll, and is one of the ways they get past kill-files. The
only thing that actually works on a determined troll is for the entire group
to utterly ignore him/her, and I've only ever seen one group do that.
Those aren't really trolls. They're just assholes.

The funny thing is that in OE, one person that I have blocked by both
email address and nym, had posts show up even though the blocks
_precisely_ match the email address and nym used in those posts.
However, if I apply the rule as-is, the posts will be deleted. Yes, the

Does it? I only looked at it relatively briefly some time back. My
recollection was that it was more like Thunderbird, with fairly
simplistic filtering ability. If OE can do that, then there's even less
excuse for Mac.
Well, I have been satisfied with XanaNews. Many are big fans of the
XNews, which has some of the most powerful filtering around.
Hey! :-|| That's low. Tsk, tsk.
The OE filtering ability _doesn't_ _always_ _WORK_ , as I've recently
told Dragon Lady. It'll sometimes let posts through that should have
been blocked, *and* whose originator is on the "Blocked Senders List"
(using the current and all previous email addys) and then if I manually
apply the rule as-is, the posts will be deleted. These are posts whose
originator was precisely blocked both by email addy *and* nym, *and* for
that specific newsgroup, the rule was Active (turned on), and STILL they
got through. Get it?
Or nuke their house from orbit (but you may have to know a president for
that ;)
Hm, lost me there *g*

I was referring to the ability to filter cross-posted newsgroups. I was
unaware of OE having that capability. At any rate, sounds like you're
not satisfied with OE, so a change would seem to be advantageous.
