No new episodes, no reruns, no nothing. They're just *gone*.
What the hell happened? Did they finally cancel them? Why no fanfare?
I wish to hell the networks would actually tell viewers what the hell is
going on. For the past few years I've noticed more and more often shows
just jumping around, disappearing for weeks at a time, or even
disappearing and never coming back without any announcements or messages
telling people what to expect and why. Is it gone forever? Is it back in
a week or two? After Christmas? Did it move to another night or a
different time? Who knows! The only way to find out is to check the
guide every day and see if it reappears.
Is it too much to ask to a) stick to a regular schedule for months at a
time rather than only a week or two and b) when for some stupid reason
you really can't, put a blasted message at the end of the episode just
before the move/gap/whatever telling people where/when to find the next
one? They do do that *occasionally* -- "Next week's episode airs at a
special time" or similarly -- but all too often they just silently move
stuff around...
Of course, whenever they screw around like this it plays hell with
programmed DVRs too, and no amount of alert messages would help with
that. The thing will record whatever is on at 10 pm, come hell or high
water, and if they yanked your show and replaced it with some stupid
half-baked movie or event or something instead, you'll get a chunk of
that instead of what you wanted.
Of course, people not getting what they want leads to people taking
their money (or their ad-viewing) elsewhere, so I have to question the
intelligence or motives of any businessman at a network that thinks
rearranging the schedule every three weeks is better than rearranging it
just once in May, once in September, and once in January like in the
good old days.

What kind of piece of shit DVR do you have that only records by time
and not by show? Or are you too stupid to figure out how to use it
properly?

Oops, that'll get ya plonked (well, he did give me three strikes).
He's only using it as "an example". Hell, he's saying all three shows
are on at 10:00 (another thing he'll deny, if he reads this).
I asked him that once, he never did answer. My DVR has to be manually
set up to record at by time rather than title, every time. It isn't
like a series record, set it and forget it.
Well, along with that new Mac you pine for, a new, HD DVR should be on
Santa's list. Setting by time and channel manually would drive me nuts;
I've done it exactly twice on my DirecTV recorder over the last two years.

I have an HD DVR. It sets by title/series name. I *hate* trying to
set by "time" rather than title. It's a massive pain, and you can't
set it to always record at a set time every week, either. It sucks.
Who cares?! A "Vampire Diaries" rerun is on tonite!!! :)
Ian (And, before you ask - No, no I will never get tired of doing
this!...)
P.S. This will teach you to live in some other little country -
"Fringe" and "CSI" reruns, at least, are airing tonight in The States!
Ha!! :p
Followed by 'A Supernatural Christmas!'

The Mentalist too.
Ah, but we get to see "Miracle on 34th Street", the 1947 one, and "A
Christmas Carol", the Allistair Sims one, or a Christmas movie with
the renovated Jennifer Grey. The French channels were running "Home Alone
2" and a Wallace & Gromit movie.

And people wonder why some of us still have VCRs....

Good God, Ian, don't even *hint* that he should move to the States!

That was kind of a touching show, as I recall. I didn't rewatch it.
I suspect from your response that I wasn't clear. The only thing that
sucks on the DVR is if I *wanted* to set a recording by time, rather a
show's title (I prefer by title or series recording as my DVR calls
it).
It came from my cable provider, it is less than a year old. I hate
setting recordings by time. It's much easier to set a series
recording, and just forget about it.
The guide is much more accurate than a certain poster's guide.
No, no... I wasn't clear. It sets recordings by the title of the
show. That's what it was intended for. It will record *all* new
shows, regardless of which channel they are on or which day, and I
never have to worry.
I never set a recording by "time". Ahh, take that back... I set one
time when the occasional power outage knocks out the memory (until the
reload is finished, takes about 2 hours). It's easy enough to set for
one or two shows. Just couldn't do it for a recurring time.
I understand that. I'm just surprised that it doesn't also allow
you to set a repeat recording by time, and that any time-based
recording is difficult to configure.
I have a several-years-old PVR that can record either from the
guide or manually. The latter takes only seconds to set up. Such
intuitive user interfaces are why I like Sony products so much.
Patty
I can't think of a reason why I'd go with a recurring time recording.
Give me an example of why you do that, please? I'm just curious why
my brain isn't coming up with something.

Our Cable company got Sony HD/DVRs, I have to admit to liking it, but
the time set is still something that had to be set manually every few
weeks.
What if a show is stripped on cable M-F and the network also shows
reruns of the current season on Saturday nights? You only want the
older seasons, so you set up the unit to record the M-F airings only.
Patty
p.s. Is there some reason you aren't trimming your replies?
It's frustrating having to scroll down a long ways to see the
new text.
Or if the show's repeat, that same evening, isn't picked up as such, and
you get two recordings of the same show per day. This happened with the
annoying Jim Cramer's "Mad Money" show, which was broadcast M-F at 3 pm
and 8 pm. Normally, my DTV recorder is excellent at recording only first
runs, or all, as directed.

I could have chosen repeats only. I can select shows individually
(click "info", then tell it to record that show), I can set that as
far ahead as the menu goes). I don't always want *all* reruns, but
there are the occasional ones.

'Cause I'm a frickin' idiot. I try to remember to trim, but when the
brain shuts down, it shuts all the way down.
So long as the recorded show is still there, it won't re-record it.
It would only record if I deleted the first recording.
But they're *all* repeats, just from different seasons of the show.
So asking to tape repeats would record all of them, not just the
ones you want.
>I can select shows individually

Okay, but that seems more tedious than just setting the machine
once to tape at the same time M-F until further notice.

Maybe too much exposure to Google Groups has caused some damage... :-)
We definitely have to get you over to a real newsreader soon!
Patty
I haven't run into that (except Law & Order, seasons 18 & 19), and
those aren't always on at a specific time, I just have to find them.

That's what I've told my husband. He feels he *has* to be here when I
download things, so... Should be interesting. He knows next to
nothing about usenet, newsgroups, and newsfeeds. Where are my helpful
computer geek friends when I need 'em? Oh, wait, they moved <sigh>.
