Once again this year, ABC's Lost took the top honors at the Ratty Awards, as voted by the readers of the rec.arts.tv newsgroup for the 2007-08 television season. Lost won 5 awards including Best Series on Television and Best SF Series. Also winning 5 awards at the 14th Annual Ratty Awards was House, winner of Best Drama Series among other awards.
NBC led all networks in winning Rattys this year, picking up 8 in all, spread among 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights, and Heroes.

Here is an updated list of the shows which have won the most "Best" awards in the 14-year history of the Ratty Awards:
1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer; The X-Files (33 each) 3. Lost (23) 4. Malcolm in the Middle (19) 5. The Simpsons; 24 (17) 7. ER (16) 8. Gilmore Girls; Veronica Mars; The West Wing (13) 11. Alias; Angel; Frasier; Late Show with David Letterman (12) 15. Arrested Development; The Daily Show with Jon Stewart; Friends; House (11) 19. Battlestar Galactica (10) 20. How I Met Your Mother; Scrubs (9) 22. The Office (8) 23. The Amazing Race; 30 Rock (7) 25. Ally McBeal; Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher (6) 27. Sesame Street (5)
The only show to join the "5 or more Rattys" club this year was 30 Rock, which won four Rattys this year after winning three last year.
Other notable achievements among the Ratty elite were Lost's making it into 3rd place all-time, ahead of Malcolm in the Middle, by winning an additional five awards this year. Other than that, the top 10 shows on the list had no changes.
Of the twenty-seven shows listed above, fourteen are continuing in production for the 2008-09 season and remain possibilities to move up in the rankings: Lost, The Simpsons, 24 (which skipped the 2007-08 season), ER, Late Show, The Daily Show, House, Battlestar Galactica, How I Met Your Mother, Scrubs, The Office, The Amazing Race, 30 Rock, and Sesame Street (although we no longer have children's program categories for Sesame Street to compete in). The list of continuing shows is the same list as last year, other than the addition of 30 Rock; none of the Ratty elite were cancelled this year.
By the way, there are three shows in production that have won 4 Rattys each and have a good chance of entering the Ratty elite next year: The Colbert Report, Heroes, and South Park.
***
The list of shows which have received "Worst" awards at the Rattys is much shorter, because there are very few "Worst" categories. The following are the only shows which have received more than one "Worst" Ratty:
1. Walker, Texas Ranger (4) 2. The Simple Life (3) 3. Ally McBeal; CSI: Miami; ER; Lexx (2)
CSI: Miami has the unfortunate distinction of joining the Ratty anti- elite this year, receiving one "Worst" this year after receiving a "Worst" in 2006.
Besides CSI: Miami and ER, the only shows which have ever received even one "Worst" Ratty and are still in production for 2008-09 are American Idol, The Apprentice, and The Moment of Truth.

Great results. I can only argue with two of these ("House" for best drama - I like it but wouldn't have put it in the top five. I guess people put too much emphasis on the season finale. And "South Park" for best animated show)

I thought most of House Season 4 was excellent, except for the first two or three episodes after the strike. The finale and "Frozen" put it over the top, but the entire season was very strong.

Here are some more notes on the 2007-08 Ratty Awards.
There were 67 voters this year, up from 60 in each of the last two years. However, back in 1997, there were 167 voters in the Rattys. If anyone has suggestions as to where we could post the ballot to attract the missing voters, I'd be glad to hear about them.
The most voted on category this year was Best Comedy Lead Actor, followed by Best Comedy Series. The least voted on category was Best Performance, TV Movie/Mini-Series, followed by Best TV Movie/Mini-Series and then Best Reality/Game Program. There seems to be some interest in dividing the categories of Best Performance, TV Movie/Mini-Series and Worst Performer on Television into separate categories for male and female performers. We'll have to discuss that next spring.
Among all nominees, the top vote-getter, both by number of votes and by percentage of the vote in its category, was Neil Patrick Harris, who won Best Comedy Supporting Actor for his role in How I Met Your Mother.
One unusual achievement this year was that the miniseries John Adams received three Rattys, despite being nominated in only two different categories. This occurred because its lead performers, Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney, tied for Best Performance, TV Movie/Mini-Series. The only other time that two performers from the same show have tied for the same Ratty Award was in 2000, when Buffy the Vampire Slayer had two of its cast members (Anthony Stewart Head and James Marsters) in a three-way tie for Best Supporting Actor, Science-Fiction/Fantasy Series.
Again this year, I expressly provided in the rules that encouraging Ratty voting in other newsgroups, blogs and web sites is allowed. I even wrote, near the beginning of the rules, "CAMPAIGNING IS ALLOWED." However, I couldn't find much evidence of campaigning, at least not on newsgroups. And if a significant number of people had campaigned elsewhere, I would have expected to receive more than 67 ballots.
Of course, one risk of campaigning is that the results will be skewed by a large influx of voters supporting one particular show. But this is balanced out by the possibility that campaigning by the supporters of various different shows could increase the number of voters and hence make the results more representative.
Thanks to everyone who voted, and hopefully the Rattys will return next year for the 15th edition.

> BEST COMEDY SERIES > ** winner ** 30 Rock (NBC) > 2. The Big Bang Theory (CBS) > 3. How I Met Your Mother (CBS) > 4. The Office (NBC) > 5. Desperate Housewives (ABC)
The Office should have been tied for 1st place or a very close second.
> BEST COMEDY LEAD ACTOR > ** winner ** Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy - 30 Rock (NBC)
That's Sir Alec Baldwin!
> BEST COMEDY SUPPORTING ACTOR > ** winner ** Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson - How I Met Your > Mother (CBS) > 2. Rainn Wilson as Dwight Schrute - The Office (NBC) > 3. Kyle MacLachlan as Orson Hodge - Desperate Housewives (ABC) > 4. Rhys Darby as Murray Hewitt - Flight of the Conchords (HBO) > tie. Jason Segel as Marshall Eriksen - How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
Rainn Wilson should have won.

Carrie Fisher as Rosemary - 30 Rock, "Rosemary's Baby" (NBC) > 4. Brooke Smith as Valerie Scottson - Weeds, recurring (Showtime) > 5. Edie Falco as Celeste Cunningham - 30 Rock, recurring (NBC)
Falco or Fisher would have been the more logica choice.
> BEST DRAMA SERIES > ** winner ** House (Fox)
Good choice, after what six or seven years the best winner actually deserves the award.
> BEST DRAMA LEAD ACTOR > ** winner ** Hugh Laurie as Gregory House - House (Fox)
Hope and praying he finally gets an Emmy!
> BEST DRAMA SUPPORTING ACTRESS > ** winner ** Adrianne Palicki as Tyra Collette - Friday Night Lights > (NBC) > 2. Natalie Zea as Karen Darling - Dirty Sexy Money (ABC) > 3. January Jones as Betty Draper - Mad Men (AMC) > 4. Mia Wasikowska as Sophie - In Treatment (HBO) > 5. Leighton Meester as Blair Waldorf - Gossip Girl (CW)
Having finally seen all of season one of Mad Men I think Jones was robbed, as was Wasikowska. Two of those picks are jokes, right?
> BEST SF SERIES > ** winner ** Lost (ABC) > 2. Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi) > 3. Doctor Who (Sci Fi) > 4. Pushing Daisies (ABC) > 5. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Fox)
Any of the top 3 would have been a fine pick.

There were episodes where Emerson doesn't turn up, so I would much rather he not win, Tennant or Olmos should have won. Shame the Emmys only recognize Emerson.
> BEST SF LEAD ACTRESS > ** winner ** Mary McDonnell as Laura Roslin - Battlestar Galactica
Fine choice, women her age aren't given enough to do in Hollywood, more on tv than film but its still not enough.
> BEST SF SUPPORTING ACTRESS > ** winner ** Yunjin Kim as Sun Kwon - Lost (ABC) > 2. Summer Glau as Cameron Phillips - Terminator: The Sarah Connor > Chronicles (Fox) > 3. Oh puh-leeze. Kim?!? She's a good actress, but she's on the smaller scale of roles on Lost. Helfer or Sackoff were the corrent picks here.
> BEST SF GUEST ACTOR > ** winner ** James Marsters as John Hart - Torchwood, recurring (BBC > America) > 2. M.C. Gainey as Tom - Lost, recurring (ABC) > 3. I've seen Marsters do better work, it was fun having him on the show, but Dean Stockwell is the mother fucking man!
> BEST NEWS/TALK/DOCUMENTARY PROGRAM (series or special) > ** winner ** MythBusters (Discovery) > 2. The War (PBS) > 3. Meet the Press (NBC) > 4. The Universe (History) > 5. This American Life (Showtime)
Mythbusters is a nice way to kill time, but The War was art, shame on anyone that didn't vote for that masterpiece.
> BEST ANIMATED PROGRAM (series or special) > ** winner ** South Park (Comedy Central) > 2. Kim Possible (Disney) > 3. The Simpsons (Fox) > 4. Family Guy (Fox) > 5. The Boondocks (Cartoon/Adult Swim)
Of course! Family should have been a close second.
> BEST NEW SERIES > ** winner ** Pushing Daisies (ABC) > 2. Damages (FX) > 3. Chuck (NBC) > tie. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Fox) > 5. Gossip Girl (CW)
Great choice if Journeyman and In Treatment weren't nominated.

here was nother to improve on, you can't fix what isn't broked.

It was a bad year for them. I wish in retrospect I'd done a quick review of movies on LMN and SciFi before sending in nominations ;)

Pretty much always a bad year for them.
There seems

Instead, how about separating the category into "Worst Performer on Television" and "Worst Performer on Television not based in Miami"?
Seriously, you might think in terms of an all-time list, disqualifying previous years' winners.

So far I'm enjoying this season of "House." Yes, I'm running behind. I have three eps left in this past season so I should finish up in time to start the new season (assuming I can keep up with the new season and don't end up falling behind again.)

This is great! I was chagrined at having to choose between them, so I'm delighted that it turned out a tie. Next year, maybe separate actor/actress categories?

He really should get a Lifetime "Achievement" Award in the category.

Well, I thought that 30 Rock had an off second-half of the season, so I voted for TBBT, but if it wasn't going to be TBBT, at least it was 30 Rock. (Rob's score: 1 correct vote/1 category)
>BEST COMEDY LEAD ACTOR >** winner ** Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy - 30 Rock (NBC) >2. Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper - The Big Bang Theory (CBS)
For an excessively conservative bunch, you sure do like Alec Baldwin. What the hell is wrong with you that you didn't vote for Jim Parsons? (1/2)
>BEST COMEDY LEAD ACTRESS >** winner ** Tina Fey as Liz Lemon - 30 Rock (NBC)
She's a funny actress, she's a funny writer, she's a MILF, she makes horn-rimmed glasses look cool and magazines know that they'd get guilt-tripped by Fey Fans if they airbrushed her scar out of her photos. That's star power. (2/3)
>BEST COMEDY SUPPORTING ACTOR >** winner ** Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson - How I Met Your >Mother (CBS) >2. Rainn Wilson as Dwight Schrute - The Office (NBC) >3. Kyle MacLachlan as Orson Hodge - Desperate Housewives (ABC) >4. Rhys Darby as Murray Hewitt - Flight of the Conchords (HBO) >tie. Jason Segel as Marshall Eriksen - How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
NPH was one of Ratty's most reliable locks this season. I think it would have turned out this way even if Jeremy Piven had been nominated. (3/4)
>BEST COMEDY SUPPORTING ACTRESS >** winner ** Alyson Hannigan as Lily Aldrin - How I Met Your Mother >(CBS) >2. Jenna Fischer as Pam Beesly - The Office (NBC)
Oh, you Buffy fans. Fischer definitely had the better year (even though The Office didn't.) Aly's horrible fake tan and brown hair did NOT help. (3/5)
>BEST COMEDY GUEST ACTOR >** winner ** Will Arnett as Devon Banks - 30 Rock, recurring (NBC) >2. Beau Bridges as Carl Hickey - My Name Is Earl, recurring (NBC) >3. Blair Underwood as Mr. Harris - The New Adventures of Old >Christine, recurring (CBS) >4. Tim Curry as Nigel St. Nigel - Psych, "American Duos" (USA) >5. Freddy Rodriguez as Giovanni "Gio" Rossi - Ugly Betty, recurring >(ABC)
This one was pretty much a default win. (4/6)
>BEST COMEDY GUEST ACTRESS >** winner ** Sarah Chalke as Stella Zinman - How I Met Your Mother, >recurring (CBS) >2. Amy Ryan as Holly - The Office, "Goodbye, Toby" (NBC) >3. Carrie Fisher as Rosemary - 30 Rock, "Rosemary's Baby" (NBC) >4. Brooke Smith as Valerie Scottson - Weeds, recurring (Showtime) >5. Edie Falco as Celeste Cunningham - 30 Rock, recurring (NBC)
I would have voted for Sarah Chalke regardless, but you guys really should have also nominated Britney Spears. (5 out of 7)
>BEST COMEDY EPISODE >** winner ** How I Met Your Mother, "Slapsgiving" (written by Matt >Kuhn, directed by Pamela Fryman) (CBS) >2. The Office, "Goodbye, Toby" (written by Jennifer Celotta & Paul >Lieberstein, directed by Paul Feig) (NBC) >3. 30 Rock, "Cooter" (written by Tina Fey, directed by Don Scardino) >(NBC) >4. The Big Bang Theory, "The Middle Earth Paradigm" (story by David >Goetsch, teleplay by David Litt & Robert Cohen, directed by Mark >Cendrowski) (CBS) >5. The Office, "Dinner Party" (written by Gene Stupnitsky & Lee >Eisenberg, directed by Paul Feig) (NBC)
You should have voted for "Dinner Party," but "Slapsgiving" was my second choice. (5/8)
>BEST DRAMA SERIES >** winner ** House (Fox) >2. The Wire (HBO) >3. Damages (FX) >tie. Friday Night Lights (NBC) >5. Dexter (Showtime)
Ugh. I *like* House and that's just a travesty against ALL of the other four. I voted for FNL. I am proud to have not voted for the winner of this one. (5/9)
>BEST DRAMA LEAD ACTOR >** winner ** Hugh Laurie as Gregory House - House (Fox) >2. Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan - Dexter (Showtime) >3. Kyle Chandler as Eric Taylor - Friday Night Lights (NBC) >4. Bryan Cranston as Walter H. White - Breaking Bad (AMC) >5. Gabriel Byrne as Paul - In Treatment (HBO)
Hugh Laurie -- seriously?! (see my note above -- I voted for Kyle Chandler, too.) (5/10)
>BEST DRAMA LEAD ACTRESS >** winner ** Connie Britton as Tami Taylor - Friday Night Lights (NBC) >2. Emily Deschanel as Temperance Brennan - Bones (Fox) >3. Glenn Close as Patty Hewes - Damages (FX) >4. Calista Flockhart as Kitty Walker - Brothers and Sisters (ABC) >5. Chloe Sevigny as Nicolette Grant - Big Love (HBO)
I voted for Emily Deschanel, but I had been torn between voting for her and voting for Britton. I still don't think that Britton was given good material to work with this year versus the material that Chandler, Plemons and Palicki were given. (5/11)
>BEST DRAMA SUPPORTING ACTOR >** winner ** Robert Sean Leonard as James Wilson - House (Fox)
I voted for RSL, but just because House had a great episode doesn't mean it was the best drama on television this past season. (6/12)
>BEST DRAMA SUPPORTING ACTRESS >** winner ** Adrianne Palicki as Tyra Collette - Friday Night Lights >(NBC) >2. Natalie Zea as Karen Darling - Dirty Sexy Money (ABC) >3. January Jones as Betty Draper - Mad Men (AMC) >4. Mia Wasikowska as Sophie - In Treatment (HBO) >5. Leighton Meester as Blair Waldorf - Gossip Girl (CW)
I voted for Palicki -- Tyra & Landry's justifiable homicide plot was well done on all levels, essentially allowing Palicki and Plemons to steal the show from everyone else in the cast *but* Chandler and Britton. (7/13)
>BEST DRAMA GUEST ACTOR >** winner ** Richard Schiff as David Green - Eli Stone, "Soul >Free" (ABC) >2. Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Clayton "Clay" Davis - The Wire, recurring >(HBO) >3. Glenn Morshower as Chad Clarke - Friday Night Lights, recurring >(NBC) >4. Luke MacFarlane as Scotty Wandell - Brothers and Sisters, recurring >(ABC) >5. Glynn Turman as Alex Sr. - In Treatment, recurring (HBO)
Richard Schiff?! WTF??
I voted for MacFarlane. (7/14)
>BEST DRAMA GUEST ACTRESS >** winner ** Anne Dudek as Amber Volakis - House, recurring (Fox)
Another Ratty lock, even if the rest of the nominee list was weak. (8/15)
>BEST DRAMA EPISODE >** winner ** House, "Wilson's Heart" (written by Peter Blake & David >Foster & Russel Friend & Garrett Lerner, directed by Katie Jacobs) >(Fox)
Wash, rinse, repeat. (9/16)
>BEST SF SERIES >** winner ** Lost (ABC) >2. Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi) >3. Doctor Who (Sci Fi) >4. Pushing Daisies (ABC) >5. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Fox)
(shakes head) Lost was greatly improved this year versus season three. But against (my vote) BSG and Pushing Daisies? I mean, seriously? (And I went to the Lost panel at Comic-Con this year.) (9/17)
(BTW, Eurkea should have been nominated.)
>BEST SF LEAD ACTOR >** winner ** Michael Emerson as Ben Linus - Lost (ABC) >2. David Tennant as the Doctor - Doctor Who (Sci Fi) >3. Edward James Olmos as William Adama - Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi) >4. Lee Pace as Ned - Pushing Daisies (ABC) >5. Matthew Fox as Jack Shephard - Lost (ABC)
Tennant should have won, but at least Matthew Fox didn't. (9/18)
(BTW, Colin Ferguson should have been nominated for Eureka.)
>BEST SF LEAD ACTRESS >** winner ** Mary McDonnell as Laura Roslin - Battlestar Galactica >(Sci Fi) >2. Patricia Arquette as Allison Dubois - Medium (NBC) >3. Evangeline Lilly as Kate Austen - Lost (ABC) >tie. Yvonne Strahovski as Sarah Walker - Chuck (NBC) >5. Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper - Torchwood (BBC America)
Geez, for all the drooling over Yvonne Strahotski this year, and the wins for Lost above, I find McDonnell's win here surprising. My second choice, after Eve Myles. (9/19)
>BEST SF SUPPORTING ACTOR >TIE: >** winner ** Jack Coleman as Noah Bennet - Heroes (NBC) >** winner ** Michael Hogan as Saul Tigh - Battlestar Galactica (Sci >Fi) >3. Terry O'Quinn as John Locke - Lost (ABC) >4. Henry Ian Cusick as Desmond Hume - Lost (ABC) >5. Naveen Andrews as Sayid Jarrah - Lost (ABC)
I voted for Jack Coleman. Clearly, three Losties in a category splits votes, so I suggest that next year, the Rattys adopt the Emmys' new rule of no more than two nominees from the same show in any category.
(10 for 20)
>BEST SF SUPPORTING ACTRESS >** winner ** Yunjin Kim as Sun Kwon - Lost (ABC)
Another lock. And another lock that I agreed with. (11/21)
Although I am kinda stunned that the Buffy fans restrained themselves, resulting in Summer Glau coming in dead last. I suppose Terminator's fanbase among the Ratters are just the talky ones.
>BEST SF GUEST ACTOR >** winner ** James Marsters as John Hart - Torchwood, recurring (BBC >America) >2. M.C. Gainey as Tom - Lost, recurring (ABC)
Jeez, I wasn't expecting Ratters to vote against a Lostie, much less for someone from Torchwood. But I suppose Buffy trumps Lost.
I'm almost thinking that very few people here besides me and Whovians watch Torchwood. (12/22)
>BEST SF GUEST ACTRESS >** winner ** Kristen Bell as Elle Bishop - Heroes, recurring (NBC)
No brainer. Best of the bunch. (13/23)
>BEST SF EPISODE >** winner ** Doctor Who, "Blink" (written by Steven Moffat, directed >by Hettie Macdonald) (Sci Fi) >2. Pushing Daisies, "Pie-lette" (written by Bryan Fuller, directed by >Barry Sonnenfeld) (ABC) >3. Lost, "The Constant" (written by Carlton Cuse & Damon Lindelof, >directed by Jack Bender) (ABC) >4. Lost, "The Shape of Things to Come" (written by Brian K. Vaughan & >Drew Goddard, directed by Jack Bender) (ABC) >5. Lost, "There's No Place Like Home" (written by Damon Lindelof & >Carlton Cuse, directed by Stephen Williams and Jack Bender) (ABC)
I voted for There's No Place Like Home," from Lost. Again, I think this one is an example of the need to limit it to two nominees per show per category as I firmly believe that the three Lost episodes cancelled each other out. Had one of other two Lost episodes been dropped, I think "The Constant" would have won (yes, even though I voted

Dude, HellllooooOOOOOOoooo! Marsters was nominated and won Best SF Guest Actor for his role as Captain John Hart on Torchwood this year.

But dude, I was at or recovering from Comic-Con for, like, 80% of the voting period (July 21st to July 29th, then recovering through August 1st versus the voting period of July 19th to August 3rd).
If the voting period could be pushed up to July 1st to the 15th or back to August 1st to the 15th next year, I could sooooooo totally campaign for the shows that I want to lose just so that I could bring in more people to vote for the ones I want to win in a misguided effort to spite me.
I think at least few others here also went to Comic-Con, so that might be one of the problems.
Also, while I agree with dividing Movie/Miniseries Acting and Worst Performer into categories by gender, I think each of the Movie/Miniseries acting categories should then be limited to 3 nominees as there are so few movie/miniseries, much less *good* ones, anymore. I mean, when Tin Man is one of the nominees (and I admit that I nominated it), you really *are* scraping the bottom of the barrell. Conversely, both Worst Male Performance and Worst Female Performance should stay at 5 each as I think Secret Life of the American Teenager has just soooo much potential in both categories next year. Whatever Jerry O'Connell is in, too.
