>"Prison Break" (FOX)
Mostly excellent. Still preposterous (are all the tattoos really
necessary? Michael couldn't remember a couple of things?) but if you
can get past that it's a fun thrill ride. They took all the good
elements from season 1 and added William "Bill" Fichtner as someone
actually capable of figuring things out. Kudos for continuing what
seemed like a one-season premise and keeping the quality up. Grade: A-
>"VANISHED" (FOX)
Interesting setup but it feels more like a procedural stretched out
over 22 episodes rather than an actual serial. There's also a
potential of having too many characters and a messy, complicated
storyline. The guy playing the agent bugs me. He's like a Harry
Hamlin/Ashton Kutcher "if they mated." And I prefer a real
cliffhanger, not something that feels like the half-hour mark of 80%
of all "Without a Trace" episodes. Anyway, I'll keep watching for now
but it doesn't seem worth downloading and making time for later so
it'll likely lose me once "Heroes" starts. Grade: C

I skipped Vanished, but watched Prison Break (I finally finished the last
two episodes of the first season last night). I knew Robin Tunney's
character was in trouble when her credit in the opening no longer featured a
picture of her (unlike last season, where she got an accompanying picture
like Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell). T-Bag being able to run around,
seemingly in little pain, is completely ridiculous - in real life, he would
have passed out from blood loss. And don't get me going on the vet
reattaching the hand. But it's still good fun, if you can suspend your
disbelief.
Since they're starting in August, are they planning to take a midseason
break like last year?

The fact that it suddenly went from the dead of winter to summer didn't
bother me that much. I was surprised to see John Doe's kid still in the
credits after he disappeared last season I though we had seen the last
of him. T-bag, you're an idiot! They should have made Jeff Perry who
now plays the Presidential brother wear glasses to help with the
transition. Rest in peace paleface, Robin Tunney, I didn't see that one
coming.

Remeber that climber guy that cut his own arm off when he was pinned in

belt or rope to tie off his circulation and save blood.

And T-Bag was already mentally messed up. That probably helps.

This is probably heretical, but I wasn't too pleased with this. The
T-Bag story is a step too far into the fanciful, apparently Scofield
isn't as smart this season as last if his pursuers can fund him so
easily, and killing Veronica has be majorly bummed.
It was more like a: B, with all the plot holes, etc.

Kinda sorta. The stated reason for the early start, last year and
this, is so that there will be a good number of episodes aired
before MLB playoffs interrupts the schedule.
PB took a long break last year because there wasn't enough time
to produce the rest of the season after the back nine were ordered,
and get it on the air any earlier. If VANISHED does well, and gets
a full season nod, I'm betting that PRISON BREAK will continue to
air along with "24" in January, and that VANISHED will come back
to finish its run, partnered with "24", after PRISON BREAK wraps up
the season.

Neither did I. And right up to the point where they showed her on the
floor with a bullet hole in her forehead, I wasn't sure if they were
going to shoot her or Steadman.
I *did* see the storage locker "Silence of the Lambs" fakeout coming.
Possibly only because they used the same shtick in the pilot for
RUNAWAY.

The hot doc doesn't make it through lasts season, and they kill
Veronica first thing this season? Why would anybody still be watching
this BoC anymore? Glad I gave it a miss.

I'd imagine Prison Break would be the more popular show so would take a
longer break like Lost and ER will be doing this year and maybe letting
VANISHED run throughout and have Prison break return and end in time for may
sweeps. Maybe doing a nice big 2 hour episode in Jan or Feb to keep
everyone going on it in the meantime.
Anyway I thought Vanished was ok but nothing fantastic, Prison Break was
excelent, I was worried how they were going to keep things going but they
did it well, didn't really like the way the FBI guy seemed to figure
everything out so quick, he travelled to the wrong place, figured out the
right place without too much effort and managed to travel there in the same
time it took Burrows to drive there, dig a hole and chance their
clothes....seemed a bit too easy.
And am I right in saying it was heavily implied that the tatoo's were mearly
a blue print of the prison with one or two tips to escape (like the street
names) but never was it even hinted at that they were the ENTIRE escape
plan?
Really?
This post is the first I'd heard that the break was due to production
issues rather than FOX scheduling issues with AI and 24.

The two major changes that occured this episode (Fichtner the Fed and
Tunney the Corpse) both seemed to me to be in response to the biggest
complaint a lot of people had with Season One: everyone other than
Scofield was Deeply Stupid. (According to the article I read, Agent
Mahone was actually added at the suggestion of Fox entertainment
president Peter Liguri, who wanted at least one person chasing them
who wasn't corrupt :) He's not stupid, noticed Scofield wasn't stupid,
and now it's 'game on'. And Veroniduh finally failed to get away
with one of her own blonde moments (which may be related to Patricia
Wetting being currently unavailable -- they have to put the VRWC on
the back burner).
I'll be disappointed if T-Bag regains full use of his hand -- it'll be
a bit of a cheat. But we don't know yet if the vet's surgery worked;
he said it wouldn't, remember.
I'll go with a B+.

Well, the reason why I would expect PB to finish first is because
it has a full season order already, whereas VANISHED only has the
initial 13-episode order, so production on PB would be farther
ahead, and therefore more likely to be ready for January airing
than VANISHED.

Official word was sheduling difficulties. Fox had the enviable
"problem" of having to many solid shows. AI, House, Bones, 24.
They didn't have a place to put Prison Break, which apparently they
didn't expect to last past it's initial 9 eps they ordered.
I agree, it would be a cheat, I know it's difficult to film, but i'd
prefer a handless t-bag for the rest of the run.
The Fed's more than smart, he's practically psychic. How did he deduce
that Woods was in a cemetary? and Which cemetary? Just for shits &
giggles i looked up there are 500(!) "Woods" in the Metro Chicago phone
book.
I don't like to parse the logic as it's just so bad however. I watch
this show for the charactors, I just enjoy them all so much.

That was actually pretty clever, and showed just what kind of mind
Fichtner's character has (he's basically the "other side of the coin"
to Scofield).
The tattoo said "RIPE CHANCE WOODS". They determined that there were
no woods in the area with that name. Fichtner started to ask a local
cop a question about the area, and noticed from the nameplate that
the cop's name was "Rivers", which gave him the idea that "Woods"
was also a name. So he had his partner check the local database for
anyone with that name. One of the names that popped up was a deceased
person named "E. Chance Woods".
So Fichtner realized that the tattoo didn't say "RIPE CHANCE WOODS",
but "R.I.P. E. CHANCE WOODS". It would've easy from that point to
discover which cemetary Woods was buried in.
Now, what possessed Scofield to picking that particular plot to
bury the goods, I wouldn't hazard a guess.

I wonder what possessed him to get a tattoo for this. Okay, tattooing
the complicated map makes sense, but he couldn't remember "Woods" for
the month or so between the time he formulated the plan and made his
escape? It sure would save him some trouble with Fichtner if he could
memorize things instead of tattooing everything.

I also got a laugh out of how (after they miraculously determined which
cemetery in Will County-- huge suburb of Chicago; LOTS of cemeteries
there-- this Woods was buried in) the FBI guys pull in and Fichtner
steps out of the SUV and walks RIGHT UP TO THE GRAVESTONE. How in the
hell did he know precisely where in that huge cemetery full of thousands
of graves, this one person was buried?

Same with the names of the streets outside the prison. Why would he even
need to remember them in the first place? And assuming he did, why would
he need a tattoo to do it?
Did anyone catch the name of Fichtner's character. I looked it up on
IMDb but Fichtner isn't even listed as being on the show in his entry.

Most cemetaries (at least, the ones I've been to) have directories.
Fichtner most likely stopped at the caretaker's office to find out
where Woods' grave was located.
It's not rocket science.

Or he just didn't want to leave anything to chance. Maybe he didn't
need the tattoos to remember everything, but he couldn't take the
chance that he might not remember.

Perhaps he was guarding against the possibility that he might suffer

You still don't jump out of a car and make a beeline right for the
correct grave. You have to look around for it, get your bearings, etc.
Besides, the way the show was edited, the impression was they raced
right from the storage unit to the graveyard with no stops in between
for a quick look through the caretaker's plat books.
It's the same sort of TV crap that has the intrepid lawyer dashing for
the courthouse and he just happens to find a parking spot right in front
of the main entrance... instead of having to park three blocks away for
twenty bucks like everyone else does.

And yet by tattooing all this extraneous and easily remembered
information on himself, that's exactly what he ended up doing. He's left
a trail of clues for the pursuers that he had to have known would be hot
on his trail. He had to know that the escape of the man who (supposedly)
killed the brother of the President of the United States would become a
national media event, even exceeding that of OJ Simpson, Natalie
Holloway and JonBenet Ramsey, and that everyone from the White House on
down would be engaged in a full-court press to catch them. So why tattoo
clues to your destination (no matter how obscure) on yourself rather
than commit a few simple words to memory?
And what the hell is Bellick still doing running around the countryside
with a shotgun chasing after these guys? Prison guards are not law
enforcement officers. They have no jurisdiction outside the walls of the
prison where they work. Once Scofield and his crew escaped, the
investigation and apprehension of the fugitives would automatically
become the jurisdiction of the state police.
This ridiculousness was highlighted when Mahone told the warden, "I know
this is still your investigation right now..."
Really? Since when? I had no idea that "prison warden" was an
investigative office.
And something else that's bugged from the beginning: Lincoln Burrows was
convicted of murdering the (then) vice president's brother. Any assault
on (let alone the murder of) a member of the Second Family is a federal
crime. What the hell is Burrows even doing in a state prison in the
first place? He should be in a federal penn somewhere (probably a
SuperMax prison likes the one in Denver where Tim McVeigh and the
Unabomber were held) and his escape would automatically become the joint
jurisdiction of the US Marshals and the Secret Service. Not the FBI.
But I guess this is TV land so anything goes... still a great show,
though. I don't think I've seen a show in a long while that can so
consistently ratchet up the tension the way this one does. I sure didn't
see Veronica's murder coming. That one surprised me.
And one more note: I'm not sure I'd be all that threatened by a
one-handed T-Bag armed with nothing but a Phillips-head screwdriver.
Especially one who was so weak from blood loss that he could barely walk
straight.
> > Did anyone catch the name of Fichtner's character.
>

Thanks.
He could remember one name.
He could probably remember one name and three street names.
He might be able to remember one name, three street names, and one chemical.
But he had to be able to access *every* detail of his escape plan,
and *all* the contingencies. (Remember, this is Plan B -- under Plan A,
they're already in Mexico.) And they explicitly showed us that he wasn't
able to reliably do that. Hence, the tattoo.

It's becoming very popular, it seems to be part of the formulas of both
Angela's Eyes and The Closer. 50 minutes into the episode someone makes
an offhand comment to Angela or Brenda, and this triggers a flash of
insight into the solution to the case.

In this case, though, the correct grave had a pile of dirt and some
shovels next to it.
The whole tatoo thing works much better as a concept than in reality. I
agree, it's stupid to tattoo the names of streets, he can't remember:
right, left, right at light? Or which grave he dug up? (And while were
at it, why a grave? Why not the corner of some farmer's field, you know
where there AREN'T paid groundskeepers and security guards?)
But even last season, the tattoo was used so he could saw a nut down to
the right size. When he could have easily just kept sawing until the
nut fit.

Awesome! I couldn't be happier that Invasion got cancelled if it
meant we get to see William Fichtner regularly on Prison Break.
Playing a dapper FBI agent, no less. The last time I was this

Perhaps, but I'm reserving judgment till later. I like it so far, and
while I'm not usually this patient, I'm quite happy to wait for more

OMG you hit the nail on the head! He *does* look like that. Uh oh, I
almost wish you hadn't said that, because every time I see him now,
I'm going to think that, hehe.
That's odd. Usually, it's a SAG/AFTRA issue. They don't allow 2 actors
be credited with exactly the same name. Vanessa Williams of first
season Melrose Place eventually triumped over Vanessa Williams of Miss
(dirty pictures) America fame and the former Miss America is now
compelled to be credited as Vannessa L. Williams.
It's unusual for an actor to change names mid career, unless compelled
to.

What's even stranger is that he's credited as Bill in Grand Theft Auto

Billy Campbell's has -- seemingly at random -- switched among
"Billy Campbell", "Bill Campbell", and "William Campbell".

It's not that unusual at all. The IMDb is replete with entries for
actors who have used variations of their names at various points
throughout their career. Just look for the "credited as" next to the
name of the character they played.
Traci Lords comes to mind. Sometimes she's Traci Lords, other times
she's Traci E. Lords and still others she's Traci Elizabeth Lords.
(And that doesn't even count her *real* name: Nora Louise Kuzma. I can
see why she kept the porn name. Her real one doesn't have any kind or
cache to it at all.)
Pretty sure it was the next day or the one after that.
