Two new series and five (and a half) returning series have their
premieres tonight (09/21/06).
The two new series are:
"SHARK" (CBS - new!)
"SIX DEGREES" (ABC - new!)
The five (and a half) returning series are:
"My Name Is Earl" (NBC)
"The Office (U.S.)" (NBC)
"Grey's Anatomy" (ABC)
"CSI" (CBS)
"Deal or No Deal" (NBC) [This is the "half" show. - ed.]
"ER" (NBC)
So, what did you think?
All comments welcome; grades are good (letter grades preferred).

Grade B: This show is basically one big soap opera. On the up side, it is
compelling. On the downside, the only 'medical' portion of the show tonight
was 'the plague'. If they would introduce some real medicine, this show
would be better.
> "Deal or No Deal" (NBC) [This is the "half" show. - ed.]
This isn't new...'half' or not.
> "ER" (NBC)
Grade A: This show is everything Grey's Anatomy wishes it could be...and
more.

A "B-." Yeah, this show is following in HOUSE's footsteps, but it
already looks like it's going to play with more of a rigged deck and
1) let Shark off the hook on his methods a lot; 2) have all the other
characters look like idiots or wusses compared to him. Guys like
Shark love to play fast and loose until that stuff bites them back,
and I agree with his daughter that S. hasn't changed, he's just
changed sides. Woods is a hoot, but the show would be better if he
had Whitfield as his boss and tougher lawyers on his team who aren't
going to bow when he says "boo."

"Six Degrees": C- (that's C minus)
(I'm sad to say)
A decent premise but no follow-thru. Without an overarching plot arc or
theme (such as the island mysteries on "Lost" or the bank robbery in
"The Nine"), the intricate interconnectedness of the characters came off
as contrived and uninteresting. The only good moment came when Abrams
dropped in one of his famous "easter eggs": a glimpse of the novel "One
Hundred Years of Solitude." If you know what that book is about, you'll
understand the significance of its appearance on the show.
If the interconnectedness intrigues you, but you never got into "Lost,"
then wait for "The Nine," which is in the same vein but more engrossing.
It's odd that ABC now has three shows with the same concept of
interconnectedness: "Lost," "Six Degrees" and "The Nine." I doubt all
three will survive. Right now, I think "Six Degrees" won't make it.

Does he live in the NIGHT STALKER house?
B+ for me
The mock court in his basement seemed a bit much. Even if he already
had it in place from his time as a defense lawyer, he's still burning
big $$$ with the real time polling and such -- who's paying for that?

*snort* Given the neon-outlined patio, I kept expecting to see
Horatio Caine hanging around somewhere--;).

Damm, y'know, that fake courtroom struck me as right creepy--like the
kind of thing a really-overachieving serial killer would have
installed--g! As for the screens and polling and all--it looks like
someone on the SHARK writing staff has taken some leaves from THE
RUNAWAY JURY...

I give it a solid A. Woods is great but I think it's also a very well-
designed show and Pilot. The switching sides premise and the
way they executed that, him being rich enough to afford the mock
courtroom, the way they humanize him with his daughter and also
not being cutthroat enough to go for the witness the first time, all
make for a good sustainable show I think. The casting of Jeri Ryan
and also Sarah Carter contributed to my being interested in this
show and I liked their characters as well.
The Perry Mason style last minute save was mentioned in another
thread, but it's not a bad tradition to be talking about. The CSI-style
premise was never enough to draw me in to those shows, nor what
I perceived more as the cop-based versions of these shows. I was
hoping for some sort of mystery solving meets legal/courtroom drama,
focus on the prosecution side, with good characters, writing, acting,
etc., and the potential for some series arcs but not too heavy on the
soap element. It looks like that's virtually 100% what I got so I'm
there next week.

Heh.
But I was serious -- that looked like the recent NIGHT STALKER's home.

As long as they don't follow THE RUNAWAY BRIDE.

Bleah. I'll give it a generous C. Did Danielle Panabaker used to
be able to act?
> "CSI" (CBS)
No letter grade; it's just more of the same, just the way it's
supposed to be. Catherine was a complete idiot at the end, trying
to er, process the crime scene on her own, but maybe her thinking
was still muddled by the effects of the date-rape drug that she'd
apparently been slipped.

IMHO that came across as just insistent writing rather than an organic
piece of characterisation.

Finally got a chance to see it: B+. If it wasn't for James Woods the
show wouldn't be as good as it turned out.

Finally got a chance to see it: B. What was up with that weird murder at
the end? Freaky.
