P.S. Yes, I'm posting this early. Partly as a reminder.
Please save comments until *after* you've seen the show!
NOTE: I will be out-of-town & without internet access between Sept. 6-10
- new shows (e.g. 'Til Death, Happy Hour (09/07)) will be premiering on
those dates but I won't be around to poll on them - whoever wants to can
poll on them in my stead... ;)
One returning series and one new series have their premieres tonight
(00/05/06). The returning series is:
"House" (FOX)
The new series is:
"STANDOFF" (FOX)
So, what did you think?
Ooo! Also, I think MyNetworkTV's two new english-language 'telenovelas',
"DESIRE" and "FASHION HOUSE" premiere tonight - so if any of you were
brave enough to watch those, feel free to pipe up!
All comments welcome; grades are good (letter grades preferred).

Just make sure it isn't a "Dateline" sting, if you get my drift.
"Desire": D+ (D plus) (a.k.a. 1 1/2 stars)
I gave up on it after 1/2 hour. It sure is a typical Latino telenovela.
Everything is there except the dialogue is in the wrong language. :-)
And the acting is amateurish; you really wonder if some of these young
actors have ever acted in anything besides high-school plays before.
But I'm not flunking "Desire" outright, for two reasons: First, it's
MyNetwork's very first attempt and I'm willing to make allowances; and
second, Latino telenovelas are not my cup of tea. Those who like that
sort of thing might well be kinder to the show.

Twenty minutes in to it and I'm wondering....so what? Dull...dull...dull...

>"STANDOFF" (FOX)
This is boring. No reason to care about the characters. The hostage
negotiator angle is slightly more interesting but when even movies
can't come up with an original angle on hostage situations what hope
does a weekly series have? And plase, no one compare this to
"Moonlighting." You'll only embarrass yourself.
Grade: D+ (and yeah I felt pretty much the same about "Bones" last
year and that's popular so what do I know)

the previews were so bad we blew off the show.
I'll give it a B+. Very good, but I have to save something in case
they pull another "Three Stories" out of the hat this season. :-)
SPOILERS....
Bonus points for not having House's leg relapse at the end of the
season premiere. I have every expectation that it *will,* but at
least it will be at a less predictable time.
By the way, besides the Ketamine, what did they do to him? Missing
a large chunk of muscle doesn't improve with a few shots.
Also, didn't they say that the Cortisol was to treat an infection?
Can an infection really be counteracted in 45 seconds? Yeah, I didn't
think so....

We just watched the MYTYVNETWORK preview special. Apparently Desire and
Fashion House is ALL there is. And despite the constant ads during it
screaming NO REPEATS we are in fact getting a second showing during the
night. And recaps Saturday and Sunday. Man, thats, what, 24 hours of
telenovella a week?
We then went through the schedule to see what the channel shows the rest
of the week. Maury. Springer. Yay.
We took it off the list of places the tuner stops at. Bye bye!
Fashion House-- D+
While some elements right off the bat are classic soap cliches, the acting
is going to kill this faster than sheer boredom will. Bo Derek, so stiff, so
not Joan Collins. And since we didn't even get Morgan Fairchild in the
premiere, bah, humbug!
So far, yes. However, when Desire and Fashion House finish their
respective 13 week runs, MyNetwork will launch another pair of new
telenovelas for another 13 weeks. And another pair after that. And so
on. Even right thru the summer, apparently.
> And despite the constant ads during it

I think that's only for the premiere week, this week; obviously to try
to hook as large an audience as possible. Not next week, according to
the listings for my local affiliate WZMY-50. (This season, WZMY-50's
lineup starting at 10 PM is unchanged from last season.)
UPN's lineup is changed into the night. All I watched on it was STREETS
OF SAN FRANCISCO that they ran at 2 and 5 am, and that seems to be gone.
[snip]
That's just what I expected from the first time they
announced the first 2 shows--ALL telenovelas, ALL the time!
I'd already crossed it outa my cable suite along with dozens
of other useless (to me) channels. Note--I would not mind
except that on Cablevision, Newark, there are already gawd
knows how many Spanish/Portuguese channels taken up by such
programming...and intended for non-English speakers--since I
speak only English, this helps me not a whit! Buh-bye
MyTVNetwork! ...tonyC
you don't have to speak Spanish to laugh at Sabado Giagante -- in fact,
it's probably funnier if you don't. :-)
Interestingly, a possible market niche for MyNetwork's telenovelas might
be Spanish-speaking people trying to brush up on their English. I
believe that MyNetwork is broadcasting them with SAP in Spanish. So a
Spanish-speaking person trying to learn English can switch on SAP to
understand what they're saying and pick up English that way.
If the Hispanic stations were smart, they would broadcast with SAP *in
English*; so that even Anglos like you could watch "Sabado Gigante" with
SAP and pick up a little Spanish that way.
If our gardeners start speaking very melodramtically, we'll know what
happened.

I've always thought they should do that with Sabado that that Imapcto
show. I think the problem with Sabado is it's pretty much a long
rambling live show. Be a real pain to dub it.
House's "pain" has always been problematic - they've played around with
it a lot in Season 2. Where does the pain stop and the addiction
begin? Is he using the pain to excuse the addiction? Seems so, from
tonight's ep.

That's what Cuddy said, but she lied. She didn't want to raise false
hopes.

No, but inflammation can, apparently.

Doom, but that's only because the girls went to do something
even more dangerous.

LORELAI: Have you ever heard of a Brazilian Bikini Wax?

Ugh, no comparison to Moonlighting at all. The two leads are nowhere
that charismatic. And I *like* Ron Livingston.
