Isn't it great that some fan had the Doug Marland tribute & uploaded it to
youtube?!!! I saw that the other day.

They have a lot of soap opera stuff, but, not much of it is either P&G or
CBS, unfortunately. Most of it is GH during its excellent mid-90s years, the
Labine/Riche years, including tons of Stone & Robin & AIDS stuff.

Thank you - this made me cry. I have watched ATWT since I was a wee
girl. I watched it as a child with my grandmother and great
grandmother.

My mom's birthday is Sunday and she watched the very first ep of ATWT
and I started watching with her and my grandmother. My mom will be 73
and last week she and my 79 year old father were crawling around on
their hands and knees ripping up their old carpeting in preparation
for the new stuff. If they still see themselves as young enough to do
that, we're all younger than springtime.

Happy, happy, Karen!

LOL! My brother and I often use the word God when we talk about them,
but it's usually in the form of a question:

"Good God, do you know what YOUR parents are up to now?"

They are characters and up until a couple of years ago, they'd go
dancing and out to breakfast and roll into the house around 2 or 3 am.
In some ways, they are an inspiration.

Then they will say something that leaves me speechless. Yesterday, I
was telling them about the granite countertops I'm putting in. Now,
they are the last big fans of Formica, which was all the rage in their
day, and it goes with the 70's era crapfest they have: Tang, Hamburger
Helper, Spam, Vienna Sausages in that little poptop can.

My father said, "Why would you put that granite stuff in your kitchen?
You're going to break a glass everytime you put one down on the
counter. What's wrong with a nice Formica with a rolled edge like
ours?"

See, there's really no way to answer that question without getting
into hot water. They have my brother and I stumped most of the time,
we're still trying to address this one: "No, we've never tried
lobster and never will. What if we like it? We can't afford it."

KC, I have become addicted to all the home improvement shows and have
your answer: resale value.

At least, that will be my excuse when it comes to replacing my cook
top.

Can one buy formica anymore? Other than at a salvage yard, ha ha.

Enjoy that pretty kitchen!

You're right, my brother and I should be more appreciative. My DH and
I heard the phone ring today and when we looked at the caller ID, we
thought for sure that it was a call telling us that his 88 years old
had passed. Thank goodness we were wrong. But that call will come.

We're putting Formica in the laundry room and there is some new
patterns out there that are kind of cool, that at a glance look like
poliched stone or even stainless steel. My parents have bright orange
Formica in a white kitchen with Coppertone appliances and my father
built a booth that replaced the kitchen table and chairs. It looks
like a freaking fast food joint, but then again, you did read what
they stock in the pantry, right?

There I go again, being mean-spirited!

My parents went with Coopertone. When I met my DH, his house had
Avocado. Coppertone, Avocado, and Harvest Gold, the Holy Trinity of
applicance colors.

When my DH and I sat down with the builder, we told him that we don't
have extravagant tastes and that we have lived for years in houses
with ugly cabinets and countertops, so really, anything new will be
sooo much better than we've ever had that we'll be happy.

I just met with the kitchen guy to look at the cabinet choices he
offers and I think I turned into one of those bridezillas. After
ranting to the DH about how this guy doesn't even offer those
oatmeal-colored cabinets that are so popular lately, although I don't
care for them that much myself, but other people love them. My DH
said, "So let me get this straight. You're having a meltdown because
you weren't offered a cabinet that you wouldn't have chosen anyway?"

Well, yes. ;-))

In the four months since my dad died, I have noticed that I feel
relieved when the phone rings that it won't be "the call." My older
siblings haven't gotten out of their fifties yet, and are healthy.

Of course, I have a daughter who will get a driver's licence soon, so
I can fret over that!

Of course one can. I just put laminate countertops into my old house

spend granite money -- or even Corian money -- on a rental.

My new house has laminate, too. Doesn't bother me a bit.

My brother's college apartment had pink appliances from the '50s. I
coveted them. My apartment at the time was done in then-fashionable
gray/pink/blue/aqua/lavender. Would have been *perfect*.

table would be good, preferably covered with Nerf.) Mom's in great
physical shape -- but has Alzheimer's.

Sadly, the parent I can talk to and confide in is likely to last no more
than another year or two, while the one who's slipping away into
dementia may well live another 15-20 years.

I was talking to my parents last night about the Coppertone, they also
have a Coppertone colored sink, which I always liked, and they
reminded me that until the 50's colors and then again with the 70's
colors, appliances where just white and boring. If you didn't go for
the pastels of the 50's, you had to wait another decade or more for
something new and colorful.

For a couple of years now, I've been seeing the re-emergence of the
pale yellows and greens in small appliances and stoves that are
designed to look retro. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of those
colors showing up again in larger appliances, though probably not pink
or lavender. Actually, I've noticed a huge trend toward aqua in home
decor and in fashion and it makes sense because it's something
different, it looks good on most people, and it goes with a surprising
number of other colors.

My original plan for my new kitchen was granite counters in golds or
beige tones with clear glass tiles in aqua on the breakfast bar top
and the backsplash. When you're standing at the bar, looking toward
the pool, the aqua would tie into the pool water color.

I've seen a sample of the "antique glass" -- it looks like beach glass.
Really pretty. Probably not cheap, but would be great for the kitchen
you're thinking of.

Oh, yes, Avonite. I have their brochure right here. Gorgeous and that

though, it's not cheap. I think it's $80-160 a linear foot. My tile
guy found these clear glass tiles that come on sheets, like mosiac
tile, for about $17 a foot. Any size from 1" squares to big 12"
tiles. We're doing the whole backsplash and the bar top, plus some in
the master bath around the spa tub and a border in the showers.

I swear if I didn't love granite so much, I'd do the whole kitchen in
this stuff. The color choices are phenomenal!

This stuff at least got me a *little* excited about building this
house.

OOoo, pretty!

I just moved into my new house, and everything in the kitchen is recent
-- within the last five years, I'd guess -- so I'm not doing anything
now. But if I were? That would be a real possibility.
