Which soap do you *think* will be cancelled next?
I would cancel General Hospital (*ptui*). And it's pretty obvious that Guiding
Light will be the next soap canceled.

GL must go NOW! I can actually sit through the destruction of General
Hospital because at the very least, a story doesn't change every five
seconds. But I just don't know how much longer I can stomach GL's
destruction without being paid A LOT of money by P&G. If there is any
justice in the world, GL will be next and it will be before summer.
Sad really, I've wanted for SO long to see GL triumph, it's the oldest
show in entertainment history and doesn't get one-fourth the respect it
deserves for that, but I just can't do it any more.
But after GL, GH should go (but it won't, OLTL will be next after GL).

I would cancel Days simply because it is so utterly ridiculous. Forget
rewriting history - they rewrite the laws of nature over there. I think the
next to be cancelled, however, will be GL.

You think that Carly being shot in the head and simultaneously pining for
Alcazar was planned months in advance?
Everything on that show seems made up as it goes along.

I'm invoking my "superpowers" to overrule both you guys, and cancel
"Passions" first.
After "Passions", there are about 4 serious candidates, who all have
either reasons for being cancelled, or reasons for being kept around on
the chance they can "recover": OLTL, GH, GL and OLTL. (Of these 4, I
think OLTL is in by far the worst shape.)
Which of these do I think will be cancelled next? Well, it'll either be
GL, OLTL or "Passions", but I'm not sure which one will go first...

Passions, the show's very existence has managed to embarass and degrade the
genre more so than any other soap if you ask me.

Guiding Light.
Darn
Come, dreams of the past
Come with a love that moves so fast
Come, those shiny days
Caught in a young and restless haze
Why did we love
Then run away
So little time
So much left to say
And now its come
Young and Restless dream
I wouldn't mind them doing it at once one Friday, then starting over
from some spot in the 80s the next Monday.
None. I don't want to see any of the soaps cancelled. I'd rather they
improve. Do any of us want a daytime with less soaps? I don't, even the
soaps I don't care for. But, if I *had* to cancel one, it would probably be
DOOL. I would say GH, but GH isn't beyond saving. All they need is someone
to come in and clean house and get rid of the filth permeating Port Charles.
But DOOL is beyond saving. Much of it's core and it's heart has been
buthered away. I can't begin to imagine where the show is going to go once
the serial murder plot is over. The only way to keep an audience drawn in
by a gimmick is more gimmicks. I'd dread to think how Reilly would want to
top the serial murders.

Probably GL. I hate to admit it, but given how the show is now, I bet it's
announced before years end. I honestly think the decision to keep Conboy
means the show has no intention of trying to get better. There is no good
reason to stick with Conboy and Weston. They haven't written one good story
since they started, not *one*. Most of them have been cut short because
viewers hated them. So you rehire them? I don't know why I'm surprised.
This is the industry that keeps hiring and firing Megan McTavish.

GH is rising up again, if they would only get rid of faith yuk....and sage,
my goodness useless stupid female characters....and courtney needs a
wardrobe change desperately....
GL is really becoming my least fav cbs soap, it too is lacking the drive of
the characters of the late 80 and early 90's....
Y&R rules and so does ATWT, ....
B&B well there is just no hope at all and it is usually when i take my
shower to get ready to get my daughter from school, and get ready for
work......or if i need a good laugh.......
.i treat myself to GH every morning at 10 on soapnet!!!
i rarely if ever watch AMC or OLTL anymore so i have no opinion about
them........
.as always just pure speculation on my part please do not take any of this
seriously......m

Wow, couldn't diagree more. Faith is their most entertaining female
character right now, and I like Katie Stuart as Sage.
The problem with GH is the mob, and more specifically Sonny/Carly and
Jason/Courtney. They should permanently break both couples up, and
possibly write any two of the four out of the show (with my preference
being Sonny & Courtney to go).

I forgot about B&B - after "Passions", this is the show I would cancel
next.
Awww, how sweet, now come back from the land of Oz Anthony ... :)
It's not like we have that choice honey, they either get worse or they
die.
> Do any of us want a daytime with less soaps? I don't, even the

The question is, do I want to see daytime drag on with crappy soaps for
the next ten years that offend ALL of our sensibilities? Absolutely not!
For me, it is a question of salvaging a measure of integrity.

And then do what?

Now see, I disagree with this. I would actually say the exact opposite.
The mob took over GH so severely that there isn't enough to build on if
they got rid of every person ever connected with the mob (which BTW also
means we lose Alexis, Dillon, and Luke). I think GH _can_ improve, but
as a mobster based soap, it can't go back.
Days on the other hand, still has a lot of the point and essence of the
soap in tact in the characters. They still have Marlena, Bo, Hope,
Alice, Sami, Lucas, Jennifer, etc. and if the show wanted to junk the
sci-fi nonsense, they can. Heck, the last sci-fi act they could do would
be to make this last year a dream, reinstate all the axed actors and
just move on. GH can't do that. You get rid of Reilly, get a smart
writer, you can save Days. With GH, it isn't one writer that is the
problem.

Say what you want about Megan, Ellen couldn't even DREAM to be as good
as Megan when she grows up ...
Planned months in advance no? Equal to changing who Reva's stalker or
who Carrie is? Not even close!
> Everything on that show seems made up as it goes along.
The only soap I believe is NOT making up things as it goes along is Y&R
and actually _maybe_ Passions. Everyone else, EVERY one, including ATWT
(although a lot less than other soaps), doesn't seem to know what they
are doing from one month to the next for whatever reason. But right now,
I think GL is the worst offender of it.
We really disagree on this one Ian. Passions right now, besides Y&R is
the only show consistently engaging me. Of course a lot of it is not
smart TV or so-so TV, but I still would argue most soaps are in just
worse shape because they've had harder to fall and are doing more
ridiculous things under the guise of realistic stories.

Passions is going to be around as long as JER is writing Days. He should
be there at least until the end of 2004, considering the lack of a Days
ratings freefall as of yet. So GL or OLTL is going next. The question
is, why GL hasn't been cancelled yet because if someone is actively
trying to get it to stick around, then I'd vote for OLTL because Frons
has no such interest in keeping the soap going if it is failing and
losing money.
Okay, honest question, besides Ian and myself, does anyone here actually
regularly watch Passions? I'm not defending it or anything, but I
realize it is an easy stock answer to give and I wonder if it is
actually based on people following the soap like the others we are
talking about.
Me. I tvo it in the middle of the night. If you don't think of it as a
serious soap opera and more of a cartoonish one it is quite good. In fact
the plots are really cool, but the (would you say execution?) is awful.
Whoever thinks up the long range story is interesting, it is the dialoge
and the doing the same thing day after day after day that makes it bad. At
least that is my opinon.
Phyl

I don't watch it regularly, but I do flip around during commercials when
ATWT is on, so I'll land on it for a minute or two occasionally. What
strikes me every time is how embarrassed I am for certain of the actors -
the woman who played Ellen on AMC all those years and was on Knots Landing -
she was fabulous, always a top notch actress. And now she's just
ridiculous. I know its a paycheck, but I fail to see how she would be taken
seriously again. And Juliet Mills? Don't get me started there.
SarahE
I wouldn't say I watch it everyday (I'm not a masochist) but I have watched it
regularly in the past and do keep up with it's storylines. I have felt from
almost day one that it is insulting and a complete mockery of the genre. Yes,
intentionally I believe. The dialogue is repetitive, lackluster and just plain
bad. It pains me to know it even exists. When I see a show like Y&R and see
what the genre can be, how soaps should be (engaging, intelligent,
entertaining) IMO it blows my mind that Passions is on the air and considered a
daytime drama. At the very least AMC, GH, OLTL and GL have years, decades of
wonderful stories to fall back on, Passions has nothing but 4 years of
repulsive storylines.

This pretty much encapsulates my thoughts on "Passions".
An ameliorating factor earlier on was the show's humor, but since
Timmy's gone, even that is kaput. They also lost their best Kay and
their best Gwen, and that really hurt too.
I particularly hate the Sheridan/Luis and Theresa dreck. This show is
just bad. If it weren't for Kim Ulrich and Ben Master, it would be
completely unwatchable.

Nothing's really obvious in this 'weally weally' weird soap time!

It's not about personal preferences to me. If I got my personal
preferences, some of the soaps on the air now would not be, some that
aren't any more would be & we'd have classic soaps galore!
But, at a certain point you can't continue to have a genuine love for
the genre & see crap put on in its name, can you?

Agree absolutely that it's intentional with Reilly. Beyond him it is a
true signal of what higher PTB think of the viewing taste, level of
intelligence & attention span of the audiences today & even more of
what they expect of the audiences of tomorrow.

I forgot about B&B, too. What happens to it will have more to do with
CBS & Y&R than B&B, though, again, or ... still.

DOOL. someone needs to put it out of its misery. Reilly has ruined it
anyway!
