So far the Chinese government has put up so many restrictions on who can
come to the Olympics that it appears only the
Chinese and the athletes will be there.

The only thing I have to say is that ANYONE or any company who is stupid
enough to invest in
a Communist country deserves to lose everything that they are going to
lose. And they will lose it.

Go here for an update on what is going on in China and note she compares
before and after

In 1980 my horse and I qualified for the Olympics - and I was very relieved
when the US decided to boycott because it would have meant going to Russia.
IF I qualified today I would NOT want to go to China to compete. I know many
in the horse community didn't qualify (go to the trials to qualify) because
it would mean going to China. How could ANY athlete not feel disappointed
that qualifying means going to China? With so many countries wanting to
host, why couldn't they (OC) have changed the venue?

China owns the majority of our national debt. They also funded the
infamous "economy stimulus" checks that were sent out. We have our
heads so far up China's behind we'll never see daylight. No one seems
to care about what they did and are doing in Tibet. JMO

The air quality in Bejing is so horrible that athletes are either
refusing to compete or are simply showing up to compete in their event
and getting the hell out. Why would world class athletes compete in
circumstances that would jeopardize their health, disable their
performance and/or put their future at risk. (I'm just sayin', as
anytime you put yourself into the hands of a totalitarian regime, one
that fears no reprisal from your government, you are risking what to
gain what?)

At a guess, the IOC (International Olympic Committee) voted for Bejing
as a Politically Correct Thing To Do. We can't be seen to play Western
Favorites (harrumph), you see, can't be seen to actually notice that
all of f*cking industrialized China is a smog pit, a disgustingly
nasty petri dish of infectious diseases, a human rights horror and an
all around stain on the soul of this world...

Oh, jeez. Was that out loud?

Out loud and it should be repeated often. I truly feel sorry for the
athletes who are "ready" this year and would have to go to China in order to
compete. In 1980 the US and several other countries boycotted Russia and
held Alternate Olympics. Sure, it's not the same glory, but, without all of
the countries in Russia, their Olympics wasn't the same either. I wish the
US and others would have Alternate Olympics this year in defiance of the
conditions imposed on the athletes by having to compete in Beijing. Do we
really owe China so much that we are jeopardizing our athletes?

Up their collective asses, I suppose.

Seriously, I wonder what the television ratings are going to be like. I
don't plan on watching a single second of the Olympics in China. Does
anyone??

Your last sentence is the operative one. A huge chunk of the West
(esp. the United States) are so indebted to China one way or another
(their investments, (im)balance of trade, US corporations' outsourced
workforce, etc.) that we're terrified that China will pull its
economic rug out from under us.

There is absolutely no predicting how the Chinese government will
react when the western press, western tourists and western athletes
pour into a concentrated area. Historically, the Chinese government
overreacts when faced with strange and (inferred) threatening
circumstances. And if competing athletes, who are physically at the
uppermost edge of human conditioning, start to post medal winning
records that are far inferior to previous Olympics, become ill and
have to drop out, show up for the opening ceremonies and conclude that
their health is at risk if they compete - then bail, and if real time
television coverage is making the Chinese government look bad, I can
see the government delaying the feed.

That would be very sad (the tv delay, etc.) but it is probably predictable.
Many athletes are avoiding the Olympics because they fear the judging will
be highly prejudicial. Host countries normally do well but China may set a
new record for winning. And this is supposed to be an impartial competition
between the best of a country's athletes? Sad.

I will only watch the isolated minimal coverage offered of the equine events
(because I know the competitors) and I want to know if and how they fare in
the coverage. Other than that I will boycott the coverage, and that's sad,
because I truly enjoy the competitions.

I'm not watching one single second. At least one equestrian competitor
had said she will not subject her horses to the horrible conditions
there. Extremely bad air quality, miserable heat/humidity
conditions.......can't remembefr her name but will try to find out. I
know I certainly would not subject my own horses let alone myself to
those conditions and I certainly wouldn't support anything in which
China is involved.

Which just begs the question, "Well, WTF not???"

The minute I heard the IOC had awarded this years games to China, there
was a voice in my head saying, "Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!".

Watch the opening ceremony, if only because it is on my 55th birthday,
8/8/08. I will be pretending that it is all about me! LOL

It is going to be interesting. I suspect the government fears that
their people will learn too much about the outside world, as well as
the reverse.

I will be watching the Olympics. It will be informative to see what
the Western press is allowed to show. Boycotting it will serve no
purpose except to keep me uninformed.

Still, I was happier to see a Made in Vietnam label in a garment I
purchased a few weeks ago.
