It's funny; my lover (who doesn't watch AMC but saw Tuesday's and
Wednesday's episodes because I was making such a big deal out of them)
felt the same way you do. I liked it though because I thought it was
purposely played broadly and caricatured, full of pregnant pauses and
ominous lines just before the commercial. It seemed to me like the
writers were trying to spoof the way soaps used to be. At least it seemed
that way to me. But maybe I'm just feeling charitable because I'm having
such a ball with the old cast this week

I'm with you. I didn't see Burnett on the first time around, and although
I love Carol Burnett and her old show, I don't know what she's supposed to
be doing here. She's not terribly funny, and she almost looks older than
Langley now - very much like her old Sunset Boulevard sketch's Norma
Desmond.
Hmmm.

Oh, oh, I like that idea! I'll be much more able to tolerate it if
I believe it's tongue-in-cheek.
Not so grumpy now,
Melissa
I think her stuff's been a real hoot and I've enjoyed every bit of it.
But then, I love CB!
>Melissa, wishing Verla would pull her ear lobe and say good night.
Heh heh. :)
Joanna, wishing Verla would stay around past anniversary week.

Boy do I agree!! Someone else posted about the distraction of Maria/Edmund but
at least that ended in a hot love scene (featuring 2 people married to *each
other*, a pleasant rarity on a soap :). But every scene with Verla just
dragged the whole tempo down. I think because frankly Langley is such a
tangential character, and even Phoebe is just very occasional comic relief. It
just doesn't arouse any interest to see a mini-drama about his illegitimate
child. Of course I haven't watched today's episode--gotta see that fiance!
But yeah, that has been a waste of time during this reunion week.

Actually, I really liked the Verla scenes, and I didn't think it was too
contrived. It makes sense that Verla would come back to town and get
Langley's blessing for her marriage. (It was great to see Langley
again, btw) What really bothered *me* this week was all the scenes of
Janet and Edmund & Maria. Why couldn't TPTB wait and have Edmund and
Maria get back together *next* week? Well, I'll be cynical and answer
this question myself. The producers knew that a lot of non-regular AMC
viewers would be watching this week, so they wanted to give them a hot
sex scene so they'd tune in again after the anniversary thing ended. Am
I the only one who noticed that the characters (the regular ones, I
mean) did a lot of convenient "explaining" this week of their
characters' situations? This was to help out the "new" viewers, I'm
sure, but it sucked for us nonetheless.
Jeff
Okay, Burnett's too old to be playing Langley's daughter, but then
again, Chris Lawford is too old to be playing the Martins' grandson and
Sarah Gellar is too young to be playing Erica's rape-product daughter,
so just keep in mind that age is highly relative on this show! :-)
Jeff
I think you're right. My son only started watching AMC a few years
ago, so most of the old timers and their flashbacks were lost on him. It
didn't really help me to tell him that this person was related to that
person, and although I tried to give him as much background as possible, it
was sort of like a family reunion where your kids don't know any of the
distant relatives. He was more interested in the current plot lines. My
daughter, who has been watching for a few years longer than my son
remembered more people so the reunion and flashbacks were more fun for her.
Personally, I've been watching 18 years, so for me it was WONDERFUL!

It was GREAT.
(I keep hoping the Comedy Channel will dig it up.)

I know she used to do a soap spoof on her show called "As the Stomach Turns".
Is that what you are thinking of?

Fresno was _awesome_! At least the first time around. The second
time, they used a laugh track and it wasn't as funny. Or maybe I just
never noticed the laugh track the first time...?

I'm sorry but in Carol's behalf i must admit that just because I
respect her, I was thrilled to see her and would not dare to FF thru
any of her scenes! besides I thought they were kind of cute!
She is hosting the 25th Anniv. show on Sunday nite. Are you gonna
FF thru that too?
CAZ "sorry i'm from the older generation who appreciates Carol Burnett"
Well, I appreciate her too, and I actually felt guilty doing the
ol' FF deal (I'm probably from that same older generation as you),
but I was still bored silly with her plotline. Her arrival and her
harrowing-travel story on Monday were funny, but by Tuesday I felt
like they weren't giving her anything to do. Hence the itchy FF-button
finger.

"Fresno". It was about raisins..

I noticed that these regular scenes were incorporated more and
more as the week went on......it is my belief that the producers
were trying to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Fresno.
It was great. They had this storyline all about raisins.

FRESNO
Special treat ... Carol Burnett's on-screen daughter and daughter-in-law from
Fresno are appearing together again on Wednesday's Women of the House, Delta
Burke's new show. I sure missed Suzanne!

It might have been called Fresno. It was a spoof on Falcon Crest, with
Burnett playing the Angela Channing matriarch type who oversaw, not a winery,
but a raisin facility! She was queen of the raisins! What a riot. Terri
Garr was in it playing the Melissa/slut type and Gregory Harrison (this
cracked me up) had like no lines but walked around the entire time with
his shirt off, wherever he was. The show was named after wherever it was
they lived and I think it was Fresno.
It was a 2 part mini-series and aired some time when I was in college, so
that would give you 79-83 as a range.
Don't feel bad, Caz, I didn't know who HALF of those people were! :) I
love CB too and enjoyed the Verla stuff - actually I loved ALL the AMC
reunion week festivities and I have rarely watched AMC!!!
I taped the whole week to see everyone return - and I really had no idea
who alot of the people were but I did surprise myself and recognized a
lot from soap mags. Glad my SO was watching with me and filled me in on
the history. He loved watching all the oldies! His faves were "St.
Jenny" :) Benny, Donna (he said he had the major hots for her when he
was in high school!), Cecily, Nico (wow! and I thought Maurice Benard
looked good now! ;))... I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to
Sunday's show.

Me too JoJo! And Rex can sure stay around too! ;)

I liked her too. And glad someone said that Mary was the pantyhose ad
lady! I *knew* I recognized her. Loved the "Erica in the kitchen"
stuff and all the flashbacks.

me too! And I wish my other soaps (DOOL and GH) would do the same great
job as AMC did with their anniversary!
