In fact, we got precious little old footage at all, and mostly without
accompanying audio. Honestly, I think I would have preferred an hour (or
even two!) of old footage with limited commentary over it rather than this
faux lifestyle show about "The Best Town in America."
They do get cute points, though, for the Brooke/Erica sniping.
You know, I'd completely forgotten that Julia was dead until they showed
Maria and Mateo getting weepy over her.
All in all, I give it a big, fat 'meh.'
If I were TPTB, I might have given over a whole week to the anniversary. You
could have done an entire hour on Erica's history, an hour on the Chandlers
and the Cortlandts, an hour on the Martin family, an hour on villains, and an
hour of fan favorite moments (probably mostly weddings).
Just some random comments:
All the crap about that Mona Kane creature and almost NO PHOEBE TYLER
WALLINGFORD? No Benny and Donna? No Linc, no Kitty/Kelly.
epic FAIL.
And while seeing Nina was coolish, no Janet (other than that stupid
looking at the Moon mention from Amanda) or Natalie in the well in the
pink pantsuit or Dmitri? No Trevor except a few mentions from Hailey
and, really, no Hailey with black hair and motorcycle jacket? No
Gautama and his little mysterious fortune cookie?
I guess this was for people who watched the first 10 and the last 10
years. Just skip the middle 20. I'm glad Marion showed up a couple
months ago. Bringing her back would really liven things up. Anyone but
mopey Brooke and/or wimpy Cudahy. Would've liked me some Skye, too.
A shame Hailey's show isn't in HD.
I love how much JR loves little A. Enough to have him actually get 30
seconds (maybe) of screen time.
They are putting WAY too much on Emma.
Guess we'll have to wait for the 50th when she'll be a 17 year old
stripper with severe Daddy issues.
And I guess Opal's feelin' is going to have to wait a few days before
they strike the sets with some disaster. I kin just tell somethin' bad
is a-gonna happen.
Maybe then it really will be "Todos Mis Hijos," from Valle de los Pinos,
California. "?La Mejor Ciudad en Estados Unidos!"
What a big disappointment. I thought today would be a real treat for
those of us who go way back, but no such luck. It was a tedious chore
to watch and once I saw Marissa I realized there's no hope of this
being what it was promoted as, and I tuned out. I didn't even make it
through the first half. I would have been happy with a random series
of clips from the last 40 years, but instead we got the occasional
still photo, and very few at that. Maybe they were afraid to remind
us of how good it used to be. Time to follow Joe and Ruth to
Florida.
I missed Phoebe -- and Janet -- too, but I also missed people like Cecily,
Julie, Mark, Ellen, Charlie Brent, Sean Cudahy, Will Cortlandt, Leo,
Daisy/Monique, Myra and Jasper... They played it as an actual lifestyle
program within the fictional AMC universe, rather than an anniversary show
_for the benefit of the viewers_.
Disappionting!

Mark and Ellen! Daisy! Yeah, I hear ya. I loved hearing Palmer
referred to (by Adam, of course) as Pete Cooney. That always makes me
laugh. The old Pigeon Holler days. And Billy Clyde Tuggle!
Oh, we could do a show!

It was, but you know, they are a little busy. This must have felt like
"In The Middle Of Everything" we have to do an effing 40th anniversary,
too?
Looking forward to the disaster and the new sets. I wonder if this
catastrophe will run all the way to Gloucester.

I think meh is a good summary. I did enjoy seeing Nina and was saddened by
what appears to be Palmer's deteriorating health. I also agree that I would
have preferred a retrospective with clips of days gone by. I've been
watching from day 1 (I was in high school, not just born) and am amazed by
the hair, clothes, etc. And you know what? They showed Nick in the
commercial, but not in the show (or did I miss him?). Kelly, Link, Jeff,
Mary, Billy Clyde....sigh.

No -- she was WAY worse at times. WAAAAY worse. Now she's just phoning
her judgmentalness in. I was put off by her return, actually. They
made a point of saying she phoned sometimes, but she was never there for
anything IMPORTANT. They explained her being away when Stuart died, but
what about the many times her own FATHER almost died? JAR is her
brother, but she was never there for anything having to do with Babe's
death and JAR's other struggles. I know it's unrealistic to expect
anything given that Kelly Ripa has moved on to bigger and better things,
and that's fine, but it kind of clanged for me to have her come back
now. It's like she wouldn't even have been there if she didn't HAVE to
be for work, so why come back at all?

Nick was seen VERY briefly in a still of all of Erica's men dressed in tuxes
and holding her up on a stage somewhere (was this from the dream sequences
that led to "Raising Kane" maybe?). She was talking about how she truly
loved all of her husbands (despite the fact that Nick wasn't one of her
husbands).
I'm sorry, but that dog don't hunt.
It's not like they didn't know it was coming up. Either they didn't
plan ahead or they did... and failed in either case.
It was TERRIBLE.

which seemed very Thingish inside you is quite different when it gets out into the open and has
other people looking at it.

I can hear the discussion in the Consuelo's household now, if either
of them even bothered to watch.
"For this we showed up?"

I'm with you, Christine. I recorded it, and it seemed like the "Ryan
and Erica" show to me. It was very disappointing, and they didn't have
to cover very many years to please me. Of course, as you noted David is
the only villain in town... that is getting so old. <sigh>

Yeah, it was just stupid. Although, it didn't look like their house to me.
I thought they made a point of having it look like they were somewhere else,
maybe a hotel or their new rental or whatever.

The funny thing is that the documentary is about how great a town Pine
Valley
is, and here's an interview with a couple who couldn't wait to leave.
