I thought Opie's first movie (as a director) was _Grand
Theft Auto_. I could be wrong, though.

According to the IMDB, Ron Howard appeared in _EmD_, but didn't direct it. I
thought I saw a copy at Suncoast video which said he did direct it.
Still according to the IMDB, Ronnie's first movie as a director was _Deed of
Derring-Do_ (1969). _Grand Theft Auto_ (1977) was his second. I suspect
_DoDD_ was directed by a different Ron Howard ("our" Ron Howard would have
been 15 in 1969).

Corman told Opie that if he made Eat My Dust, he could direct his own
movie. I don't know if he ever got to do the movie he originally wanted
to do, but Corman, after seeing how successful he was in the first one,
wanted him to make a movie and name it 'Grand Theft Auto'. He did and
the movie made over 6 million in rentals and sold to a network for a
million. Cormans movies were made for 50 grand and usually made 350
thousand.
Corman knew his movies weren't art, or films, or whatever, but he had a
system that allowed him to control distribution and pretty much
guarantee a profit. That's why he was able to take chances and give so
many people, like Coppola, Scorsese, and Ron Howard, their first
chance, knowing that if they were any good they'd move on. His
autobiography "How I Made a Hundred Movies in Hollywood and Never Lost
a Dime" is classic stuff.
Oh, and he told Ron Howard, before he made 'Grand Theft Auto', that
"Conditions are rough, not much money. But if you do a really good job
on this picture, you will never work for me again."
Corman is one of my heroes.
