Going from memory here, but see Harold Clurman's book "On Directing".
I am sure you have already read his book "The Fervent Years". Also
why not _try_ to contact him directly?

I'm formulating ideas for my thesis that I'll be writing next year for
an MA in English and American lit. The subject is Clifford Odets, the
American playwright. I'm interested in how his plays were embraced by
the 1930s and the audiences of the day and how, perhaps, the staging
of these works were indicative of the social contexts.

My question is does anyone know if there is a source where I can learn
how these plays were actually blocked, staged, and/or directed? Do
you think I can obtain notes or publications that reveal how the
particular director of the plays staged these works?

Thanks in advance for any help here.

Contact him directly? Whom exactly? Odets, who died 1963, or Clurman, who
died 1980? If you manage to do this, please let us know the trick!

I was not aware that Clurman had died. Thanks for setting me
straight, and so gently too.

I second the recommendation of "On Directing", by Clurman, if you haven't
already.

Also, I know that Hunter College, New York City, has a collection of Clurman &
Stella Adler's letters. They might have other papers as well, but I don't know
that for sure. Contact the Department of Theatre, Hunter College, 695 Park Ave
New York, NY 10021.

Contact the Theater Guild in New York City. You can get their address
from information. Also, ask them about a theater library that they have,
I think it's at one of the major Univ's maybe NYU. Get a biography of
Clif Odets and check the bibliography.... Good hunting.

There is also a GIANT book on the Group Theatre, the title is comprised
mostly of the Group Theatre but I can't remember the full title. I
believe there was some focus on Odets in there. The Group Theatre itself
would probably be a good subject to research as many of Odets plays
premiered there, and Odets plays embody much of the philosophy of the Group.

Hope that helps,

I too have read this Giant tome and also can only remember parts of the
title. Try the "Drama center". The book is wondefully written piece giving
insights into how "realism" came to us from Russia and the rise of
"Stanislavsky's" methord.
