August 26th, after Parade has been seen in Atlanta, Memphis, Dallas, St. Paul and Pittsburgh, those of us in the vicinity of small town Green Bay will get to see this production. Season tickets will put us at the matinee on that Saturday and then that night it's off to a Packer game. It doesn't get much better than that!

Thanks very much for your descriptive and informative post.

btw when Parade leaves small town Green Bay it heads off to Denver, Seattle and Cleveland. We do realize how lucky we are to have this production in our area.

This is true. Alaexander Chaplin also changed his name. He used to be known as Alexander Gaberman.

I too got to see PARADE on opening night at THE FOX in Atlanta this past TUESDAY...I have season tix 3rd row center for THEATER OF THE STARS which produced the show here and it was a surreal experience sitting right behind Jason Robert Brown as he was conducting his music as the actors were singing about THE CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL DAY PARADE on PEACHTREE ST (which by the way is the street where THE FOX is located). Also Leo Frank was hanged about 10 minutes from my home which definately left a shadow as I travelled toward Marietta on my way home.
All the actors were incredible and there was not a weak link in the bunch. David Pittu was much more believeable as Leo Frank then Brent Carver..he just looked more like a New York Jewish man who was totally out of his place in the turn of the century Georgia. Andrea Burns could be Carolee Carmello's twin. Some detractors say her accent is false but I have many Southern Jewish relatives with that same drawl we know so well. Very funny hearing a prayer in hebrew with an accent. A friend who saw the New York production said Carolee played Lucille Frank the same way.
And why shouldn't they..In case you don't know HAROLD PRINCE directed this touring production and was here in ATLANTA Tuesday night. I got to meet him and
had him sign my Phantom poster thats been over my mantle since I saw the original NY production.(I know I know.but I had to..lol) .He was very excited about how the show went that night and had a bunch of family and friends here (including James from Spin City..dont know the actors real name or why he was in the group?).
The sound was much better than usual at the cavernous FOX THEATER. The production is touring with their own sound system. There were still a few bugs but the soundboard guy (sorry I forgot your name) said that although the cast rehearsed in NY...this was only the 2nd time they've been through the entire show..WOW..how do you actors do that!!! The system still needs some tinkering to be a little clearer but the FOX is too big for most shows. All the shows sound have echo problems and the seats are not staggered so you'll always have a head in front of you. Urgh!
Back to the show... The original sets including THE GIANT TREE from the original LINCOLN CENTER production are all here as well as the costumes. This has to be one of the biggest events for theater in our city since Elton John and Tim Rice premiered ELABORATE LIVES (later changed to AIDA) a year and 1/2 ago.
At the party I also met Alfred Uhry at the charity desert reception after the show. I asked him if he thought this production would make money. He said probably not but it didn't matter. I thanked him for bringing this gift to Atlanta! Very nice man.
Jason Robert Brown was also at this party. Very cool..Had him sign both his CDS...(I know)...Anyway I thanked him for always clarifying these RATM rumors about his shows. He said he will be conducting the show throughout the tour and then on to Chicago for new work called THE LAST FIVE YEARS. Support and nurture this incredible talent if you get a chance. Check out his SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD featuring one of the PARADE leads (Andre Burns).
Well finally...support this show if it comes to your city. Although the subject matter is dark its an very incredible night of theater. Buy the CD and get familiar with the music and themes..You'll appreciate this cast and show as a whold even more!! You may want to check out the ATLANTA JOURNAL & CONSTITUTION's web site where they've listed alot of historical articles about LEO FRANK and the trial.

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that it comes out here to Southern California. I saw the original production on Broadway and thought it was amazing.
This is true. Alaexander Chaplin also changed his name. He used to be known as Alexander Gaberman. ++++ And it's not everyday that an actor takes on his mother-in-law's maiden name [Daisy Prince's mother is Judy Chaplin, daughter of the late composer/musical director, Saul Chaplin].

Well, I wish ta hell our Civic Center would pick it up. They seem to have found room for the non-equity ANNIE. [NOT that I have anything against the show, or this production in particular----but fer cryin' out loud ANNIE was just HERE in the last two years....you'd think with few road shows available and not much new on offer, our stupid civic center in San Diego (are you people listening?) would buy a fricken CLUE and get something NEW.

Who's bitter? Certainly not Karen...

But seriously, I really do understand how you feel. I have to travel all the way to freakin' Pittsburgh to see this show. It better be damn good. ;-D I have a feeling it will be though. Keep the reviews coming!

This reminds me of Lynne Thigpen's acceptance speech when she won the Tony award for her role as Judith B. Kaufman in An American Daughter. She said something like, "In the words of Judith B. Kaufman, Shalom y'all!" I love it!

Just so listers won't be disappointed: JRB is scheduled not to conduct certain performances of the tour. But not to worry: Those performances will be in the most capable hands of Thomas Murray (who just won a Jeff Award in Chicago last week for his music direction of the US premiere of SATURDAY NIGHT -- he's been basically Chicago-based till now).

<grin> I just had to emphasize how far away that is from "freakin" livonia, Mi ;-) I'm seeing the very last performance in Pittsburgh, which I believe is August 20.

Oh, now there I agree.....I got an uncle that lives there....and the turnpike to get there is STILL probably screwed up .
[BTW, Pman, how's the work on Rte. 22 coming along? The were working on it when I was 6, and probably won't finish until long after you and I are dead....then they'll start over.]

Karen,
Route 22 is now open with NO DELAYS!!!!!! They still need to work on it beyond Airport Road. Airport Road is a mess itself right now. But you are right, if they EVER really get done, they'll start over.

ah! the turnpike! totally screwed up from New Stanton and points east! up to four hour delays!!!! my cousin is one of the construction workers, and the tales he tells of the hell drivers put the crews through...it's odd that no one has pulled guns yet...they're still sticking to spit and name-calling.

And the patrons certainly don't have any problems hearing during the rock concerts that the Fox hosts. I always cringed at the thought of Widespread Panic fans being unleashed on one of our National Historical Buildings, but they are big cash cows for the theatre.
The worst acoustics for a particular show that I saw at the Fox has to go to Victor Borge. I'm sure that Victor put on a wonderful show, but I barely understood a word he said.
Another problem for touring shows coming to the Fox is the dimensions of the stage. The distance from the front of the stage to the back wall is quite small (especially compared to the huge proscenium arch). Miss Saigon and Riverdance have to go to the Civic Center while Phantom just barely fits.
Imagine theatre in Radio City Music Hall. It is nearly just like the Fox in scope, only the Fox stage is very shallow, as Amanda says. But the size of the houses are nearly the same, though the architecture is quite different.
Don't get me wrong, the Fox is a fabulous space. I grew up there, lookiing at those stars and clouds moving on the ceiling. Heaven. Heaven!

Actually Pa and a few other states have one "traffic ticket" that should be applied everywhere: "speed" or something like that in a construction zone and you get fined triple or whatever.
I'm sure the drivers just assume the road crews are armed too. It's like "do you stay in DC, Md, or Va" when travelling to the Washington area. The obvious answer is Va.

Yeah, well, they had planned to bring it to Boston but that fell through! ARRRGGHH! I have a whole bunch of friends who would love it!
