"Original" Musicals?

I was looking through my CDs and I began to notice a trend. The
majority of musicals are based on either previous works or historical
figures and events. Can anyone think of truly "original" musicals. 2
lists are below - First are the "based on"s and then the "original"s.
Some things may be based on more than what I have listed. Please
correct me if these are wrong. It seems pretty sad to me. (they had to
write TWO musicals about the Peanuts gang?! two about some Phantom in
an opera house?! all right I can see writing 2 things about bible
issues. but did we really need 2 wild parties and a sequel to Bye Bye
Birdie?! We liked Bye Bye Birdie. It was fun, but I don't really care
about Albert and Rose. give me a break!)

Cabaret is actually based on the Berlin stories of Christopher Isherwood and
John Van Druten's play, I AM A CAMERA.

You could also point to MUSIC MAN, PAINT YOUR WAGON, ON A CLEAR DAY... and
BRIGADOON as originals, although apparently BRIGADOON was partly inspired by
some European fable.

famed vaudeville act and starred in 2 movies.

And virtually all of the "biographical" musicals like Funny Girl, Legs
Diamond, etc. which are however loosely based upon someone's life which
I think fits your "Historical" category ... at least as well as Barnum does.

I'd also argue that Company was not originally conceived as a musical --
the short plays that were magically combined were already written,
though not produced. So as different as the musical is, it was initially
a series of short plays.

Don't see any reason why it's sad to base a musical on previously
published, performed, or whatever material.

Wasn't Best Little Whorehouse based on a magazine article about an actual event
and the musical just fictionalized it?
Mack and Mable as well as Funny Girl were as "historical" as Will Rogers and
some of the others you put into this category as they were about real people.

as "original" are based on historical events. BYE BYE BIRDIE was
based on Elvis going into the army, remember? ROMANCE, ROMANCE is
based on a play, not a book. CAROUSEL is based on a play. HELLO
DOLLY is based on a play. GRAND HOTEL is actually based on a
play. CABARET is based on a book. FUNNY GIRL is historical. MACK
AND MABEL is historical. PACIFIC OVERTURES is historical. RENT is
based on an opera. Is LEGS DIAMOND historical? And APPLAUSE is
actually based on a short story. FANTASTICKS is based on a play.

written by Friedrich Gerstacker in 1862.

I can understand why you'd take issue with musicals based on previous works,
but why does it bother you when they're based on history? I think that's one
way to a) help people relate to musicals and/or b) to teach people about
important events or figures which may have been forgotten or ignored.

If the guy is counting "Barnum" as "historical" then SS would qualify
as "historical" too based on the same logic.

So, here is an updated list. Thanks to all who have made corrections. there
have been many AMAZING musicals based on other things. I am just shocked to
see how many are not actually "Original." This does not seem to be as much the
case with plays. Just surprised.

You're right that the first part was original, although most of the songs in
the revue weren't new. But the second half was sorta kinda based on a short
play by Chekov called "The Boor", which has the Samovar-like lawyer coming to
the rich widow's house to collect a debt, etc. I forget how it ends. But as
Dick Vosburgh or Frank Lazarus, I think, said at the time, "It's based loosely
on that play, so loosely you can hear it rattle."

This is one of the shows I wish I'd seen in its day, and not just because I
adore David Garrison and Priscilla Lopez so much. I recall that my theatre
club at Bronx Science had a choice between that and Sweeney Todd at the end of
one semester for discount tickets. Now, Sweeney opened up new vistas for me,
but I wish I could have seen Priscilla's Harpo play the bicycle wheel just
once...

This phenomenom isn't confined to musical theatre though. For example
"best picture" Oscars tend to go to adapted material. (According to one
of my books from 1930 to 1990 only 9 best picture awards went to movies
with original screenplays.) Most telemovies and mini series are
adaptions of one sort or another, I think.

IMO there are two main reasons for this trend:

1. Artistically, it's more difficult to write something new than to
adapt an existing work - particularly if the work is strong to begin
with. A lot of the hard work (character creation, plot etc) is already
done and the creative team can concentrate on the aspects that make the
story a musical (words, lyrics, book etc).

2. Commercially, it's safer to adapt an existing property with audience
recognition.

Should probably be in the 'originals' column - it's an original plot
that takes up where "A Doll's House" leaves off. None of it is directly
adapted from Ibsen's play - it just uses some of the same characters.

any of the characters found in the musical (never mind any kind of
plot). This one probably technically belongs in the 'originals' column

Sort of - the first half is an adaptation of a Schnitzler short story
("Der Kleine Komodie"), and the second half is an adaptation of Jules
Renard's play "Pain de Ménage".

This one definitely belongs in the "originals" column. Act One is *not*
in any way a biography of Seurat (Dot is an invented character who is
partly inspired by Madeleine Knobloch, the mother of Seurat's child);
it's partly about the process of creating a painting, and partly about
the idea that this painting freezes a diverse and unrelated group of
characters into a single moment for all time. Act Two, of course, is
something else again. I'd call it an original work inspired by a
painting, rather than by historical events.

IIRC a lot of the ploys used by Finch are taken from the book (e. g.
refusing a promotion so you'll appear to be putting the company's good
ahead of your own, pretending to have the same alma mater as your boss).

ROMANCE/ROMANCE is actually based on two different sources, consisting as it
does of two one-act musicals. The first act, "The Little Comedy" is based on a
short story by Schnitzler - (also entitled "The Little Comedy" and pre-dating
La Chiusa's adaptation of Schnitzler's play "La Ronde" for HELLO, AGAIN). The
second act of ROMANCE is based on a play by French playwright Jules Renard,
entitled "Pain de Menage (Household Bread). Both source materials were
written at the turn of the last century but the authors of ROMANCE decided to
contemporize the second piece, setting it in the present.

If people are saying that Bye Bye Birdie is historical, then I'd put Chess in
that catagory too. I'm not too familiar with the show but isn't it based on
Bobby Fischer's chess match against the Russian?
