I'm one who believes that how the songs are used in the film should
count for something. Moon River is an impressive Andy Williams hit
single, but not a particularly stirring bit of cinema.

And I've not seen the films two of my favorites come from: You'll
Never Know and Thanks For the Memory.

So, I'll go with the Carly Simon song that's accompanied by an equally
exciting Mike Nichols visual involving the Staten Island Ferry: Let
the River Run. Music + image = magic.

I looked for Exodus on the list . . . and couldn't find it. So I ventured
online to look it up. The song did not get the Oscar, but Ernest Gold won
the Academy Award for Best Original Score at the 1960 Oscars.

I'm chiming in again (and I seem to be the only one).

Chariots of Fire from 1981 lost to Arthur's Theme, but the music overall did
win for best score. One of my favorite pieces of movie music.

I'd also have to add "Gigi" and "Lullaby of Broadway" since I got to
sing them in shows.

We could also discuss songs that should have won. For example "They
Can't Take that away from me" (by the Gershwins) lost to "Sweet
Leilani".

With the exception of "Sweet Leilani," (which I don't know) I really
like everything from the 30s to 1951's underrated "In the Cool Cool
Cool of the Evening" which may be my favorite Bing recording. After
that, the pickins get slimmer. Hilights for me include:

> •     1961 (34th) "Moon River" — Breakfast at Tiffany's • Music: Henry
> Mancini • Lyrics: Johnny Mercer

Sorry, "Robert." Hepburn singing "Moon River" on her fire escape is
one of the seminal film images of its decade.

> •     1964 (37th) "Chim Chim Cher-ee" — Mary Poppins • Music and lyrics:
> Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman

Indicative, but hardly my favorite song in the film

> •     1967 (40th) "Talk to the Animals" — Doctor Dolittle • Music and

Hardly a great pop song, let along a great song - but it is a great
time capsule

see above

And while I wouldn't call any of the passable recent efforts songs for
the ages, they deserved to win their respective years:

> •     1983 (56th) "Flashdance... What a Feeling" — Flashdance • Music:
> Giorgio Moroder (music) • Lyrics: Keith Forsey and Irene Cara

I have to go all the way back to 1991's

And there's a huge gap of songs I don't like from 1970-1988!
