how to create sparks on stage?

Can anyone suggest a good way of producing the effect of sparks on stage without
using a grinder, or by using a grinder in a safe way?

for one shot bursts of sparks, leMatire has a pyro cartridge that
shoots sparks when fired. For a long sustained burst of sparks get a
wire fed welder and a heavy brass wheel that you can spin at reasonably
high speed. Ground the spinning wheel to the welders ground lead and
position the welding gun for the weld wire to contact the spinning
wheel. Showers of sparks whenever the welder trigger is activated.

either of these does produce showers of hot sparks, so appropriate
fire prevention measures should be in play. fire retardant treatments
to sets and costumes, fire watches with extinguishers ready to go during
the effect.

Alternatively, source of moving air, like a shop vac, blowing stage
glitter through a bright beam of light can also work.
