In 1986 or '87, PBS aired a docudrama series about the history of live
theater. I believe it was called, "The Stage." It was hosted and
narrated by a young American or Canadian man with a round face and
light hair. One episode I remember was about the early Roman comedy
writer Plautus. Another was about French 17th century theater. The
series showed scenes from the plays covered, intercut with the host's
narration. There were also interviews with talking-head experts. On
the latter episode, they showed a scene from Moliere's _Tartuffe_
(translated into modern English), with British actor Edward
Petherbridge (perhaps best known in the USA for playing Lord Peter
Wimsey, which aired around the same time on PBS) as the villian.
Obviously, I never saw the whole series, but I'd sure like to. I can't
find any trace of it, either on Amazon, IMDb, or
pbs.org.
