[Episode 3] "Parallax"

This review is based upon the work of Phil Farrand. I do not want
much credit here; I just like to do this and I hope someone else out there
in NetLand does to. And Phil, if you're reading this, thanks!

Obviously, there are plenty of SPOILERS ahead.....

##PLOT OVERSIGHTS##

--Neelix suggests to the Captain that she go to a nearby star system
for help in freeing the distressed ship. He says that they are "less
than three light years away." We can presume that means "more than
two but not quite three light years away." After the sub-space
tractor beam fails, she decides to head for this system. Yet she
orders Mr. Paris to proceed at full impulse (which is less than the
speed of light). And a later shot shows Voyager travelling at
sub-light speeds. A light year is the distance light travels in one
(Earth) year's time. At full impulse, it would have been a long
trip!

--After they realize the other ship is the Voyager, they have a
meeting. Tom recaps the action by saying they were investigating a
distress call. However, they didn't receive the transmission until
after hitting the singularity. They weren't investigating, they
just stumbled onto it.

##CHANGED PREMISES##

--Chief Seska, the Bajoran Maquis woman seen here and in several
other shows, is seen wearing a blue outfit. Blue outfits are worn by
science officers. In her other appearances, she has worn yellow.
Yellow outfits are worn by engineering and security officers. Did she
change her major or something?

--When the bridge crew decides to search for "a hole in the ice,"
Tom Paris has a lot of dialogue and is instrumental in locating the
fracture. Why is the navigator conducting this search? Shouldn't Mr.
Kim, who is assigned to Ops, be doing this? Or perhaps Mr. Tuvok,
who is on Tactical? But not the pilot!

##EQUIPMENT ODDITIES##

--Tuvok tells Chakotay that B'Elanna was confined to her quarters.
Chakotay rings her doorbell, and the door opens without her asking
him in. Does confinement to quarters not allow you any privacy?

##CONTINUITY AND PRODUCTION PROBLEMS##

--When the shuttlecraft is first shaken, the footage of the
actresses shaking is played at a reduced speed.

--The captain orders full impulse speed to the fracture. The model
shot shows the Voyager flash its nacelles. Why? Those nacelles are
for the warp enignes; the impulse drive has always been separate.

--When Lt. Carey shakes B'Elanna's hand, he has his left hand behind
his back. When the camera changes to the long shot, his hand is at
his side.

--After B'Elanna is chosen as Chief Engineer, her first task is to
get the warp engines back on line. She complains about the amount of
time she has to do this. Yet the closing model shot shows Voyager
travelling at warp speed. Hmmm, Chakotay was right....she is good!
