Sodium hypochlorite, to be exact. Commercial bleach also contains
sodium hydroxide (lye) as a preservative.
Sodium hypochlorite will dissolve necrotic tissue (wiki suggests
diluting it down to 1%; I just put a glug into the dish water).
Old wives refer to this as "drawing out the infection".
(Note: If you try this trick, use laundry soap, *not* dishwashing
liquid. Heaven only knows what is in dishwashing liquid, and you
*don't* want to mix bleach with random chemicals.)
