selected from 904 authors in my collection at that time. Of 4335
titles, 359 were selected, giving about a year's worth of reading.
Two numbers are given for Google search hits. The first is for the
author name in quotes as specified. The second is without quotes but
add "author" to the search string. If I saw a low hit for the name, I
tried variations and revised the author name to match that with the
most hits. There were several variants of author names found, so this
list definitely replaces the previously posted list. In a couple of
cases, the work title was corrected as well, but generally I did not
check that.

I found the problem with bad author names by doing a Google search on a
specific author, which led me to re-examine the entire list. About ten
percent of the author names needed revision. The worst was Tolkien
originally entered as Tolkein. I have no idea of how I mispelled so
many, but the Google hits were a clear indication for some authors that
something was wrong. In the case of a few authors there are multiple
spellings found. I noted one or two of them, but mis-spelling is as
common on the internet as in my original list. To be safe, try for a
Wikipedia article on an author. Generally there will be one, then links
in the article will give official web sites. The number of Google hits
is an artifact of the search engine and multiple persons with that name
on the internet rather than an absolute measure of author fame. An
author with over a half million hits is generally far better known than
one with less than ten thousand.
I am posting this from coolscifi.com because something is seriously
wrong at my Google groups. With the current rash of Sporge attacks
there is a lot of weirdness going on at Google groups.....
