Greetings!

I am trying to relocate a novel I read between 1991 and 1993, probably
published between 1980 and 1993. It is a spiritual journey of a young
woman to the Far East, her experiences with various lovers, ashrams
and yogis, her discovery of her "supernatural" (as in not mortal) true
love, and her eventual reunion with him. The closest I can come to
comparing this title to another is to "Child of Fortune", whereas that
title was more science fiction and hallucinogenic drugs, this is more
fantasy (or magic realism) and eastern religions. Any help you can
render is appreciated, as this book has haunted me for years!

I don't recognize the book, but if you don't get any answers here, you might
want to look at these sites, which have lists of magic realism-type books. You
might see your book on the list:

Hmmm. Sounds a bit like that 1999 Jane Campion film about Indian
mysticism and cult deprogramming that starred Kate Winslet and
Harvey Keitel, entitled "Holy Smoke!" (I haven't seen it).

Unfortunately, I don't believe it was based on a book.

Could it be "Gates of fire" by Elwyn Chamberlain published in 1978?

What I remember from it (it's atleast 10 years since I read it):

1. Woman meets guy
2. woman goes to India
3. woman takes drugs - gets spiritual and bonked by evry holy man she meets
4. woman loses guy (see 1.)
5. possibly some more (3)
6. and lastly ends with

[ spoiler space ]

She climbs up a montain and jump int a large fire

The Campion film doesn't credit this book, but then, when did she ever?

Reminds me of a joke. Guy is fed with his life, nothing
makes any sense, he can find no meaning in anything. He quits his
job, takes his savings and goes on a worldwide hunt for someone who can
explain the meaning of life to him.
After years of wandering, and talking to innumerable supposed wise men, he
finally hears of a yogi high up in the Himalayas who has the *answer.* . He
sets off to find him.
After weeks of trekking up the mountain, he arrives at a cave and finds the
yogi, stting in a lotus position.
He tells him his story, and ask him, " Tell me wise one, what is the meaning
of life."
The yogi answers, "The meaning of life. Well, you see, life is like a cup of
tea."
The guy stops him and says: "Wait a minute. I quit my job, spend all my
savings wandering the globe in search of the truth, spend weeks trekking up
this mountain and all you can tell me is that "life is like a cup of tea?"

The yogi gives him a bewildered look and answers, "You mean it *isn't*?"

BTW, supposing that this is the right book (and I currently have
placed an interlibrary loan to read it) - I evidently have good taste.
Two other readers gave the book 5 stars at Amazon, in case anybody is
interested in "flashing back"! I do recommend it if you like _Child
of Fortune_.

Speaking of spooky cults, I just learned that the only bioterrorist attack
on US soil was perpretrated by one. Maybe because there were no deaths,
it wasn't widely reported. Or maybe I was just aleep at the time.

The Rajneesh attack on the salad bars was pretty well covered at the
time, if not right away, then later, when the whole thing went to
pieces and the Bhagwan tried to flee the country.
