First they say

it's covered with water..

Now they it's covered with diamonds.

There's no water at all, it's all diamonds.

I ask, "Why should we trust these people?"

'These people', cannot be trusted with 'information'.

The Starmaker

"planet has no water at all"

"Nearby planet made from diamond".

What does "likely" mean?

(i mean the 'martian' translation)

i don't speak martian.

Imagine if girls didn't know the difference between water and diamonds!

Hmmm.... Starmaker might manage to lose his virginity?

Well, the information they had was:

This planet was *this* heavy.
This planet was *that* hot.
This planet was *that* big.
These are the more common elements in the Universe.

And so they worked out what it would have to be made of.

Maybe lots of water? Oops: it's so hot, how would the water stay on
it?

Next choice: carbon. That hot, that big... the carbon would likely
turn into diamonds.

It's science, yes, but it's not that complicated.

It's unreasonable to expect people to be unable to distinguish water
from diamond, at least under normal conditions of temperature and
pressure on Earth, where water is usually liquid.

This, on the other hand, might work:

That would require an ugly girl with intelligence as low as Starmaker’s;
I’ve met ugly girls and stupid girls, but I’ve never met one that is both
stupid and ugly. Perhaps I haven’t lived, but they all seem to know ice
cubes from diamonds. Even the stupid ones bite.

"Water is a girls best friend."

The song doesn't quite have the same ring to it ;-)

what all this is..
is a failed attempt

What information would you have to give them? You have nothing but
stupid and envy.

The police in the Police Dept.
laugh that the public
depend on them to
protect them.

They laugh.

Till this day
people are afraid to
walk the streets at night...

People are animals,
especially at night.

Do you
Will in New Haven
trust the police to
protect you?

Why trust people
who don't know the difference
between water and a diamond?

You land on the planet
and you discover
there is no water,
who do you blame?

Not particularly. The courts have consistently maintained that the
police have no _obligation_ to protect any individual. They provide a
detterant because people worry about being caught, they apprehend some
criminals. When I was shot, the list of people who showed up before
the cops is quite long. The highlight is that my mother called from
Columbus, Ohio before the police arrived. It was nice hearing from
her.
