Mid 1980's. A girl is born who is a bit better than normal humans
(intelligence, can see into IR, etc. Then the War happens and a plague
kills off all the normals. She travels over the deserted US with a rich
spoiled boy and her pet parrot, and saves the day on a space station
using mystical karate trick taught her by her kindly teacher (who is
also a "super").

Again, thank you for the kind words that we are sure are in your e-mail
but we didn't have the time to confirm by reading it in detail.

_Emergence_, by David R. Palmer, I think. I can't put my hands on my
copy right now to confirm it though.

And it turns out she has a telepathic link to her macaw, also.

David Palmer, EMERGENCE

Yep. Most people seem to think Emergence was much better
than his other novel, Threshold, but I think the opposite is true.
I never felt like I was supposed to take Threshold seriously,
but reading Emergence it seemed that Palmer thought he
was writing about a reasonable character instead of a
ridiculously unrealistic uber-hero.

Ah, thanks.

If only I still have it around, sure would like to read it and Threshold
again.

Yeah. Lots of people say that Emergence was him doing Heinlien, but
Threshold was him doing Smith -- I enoyed it.

No corporate agreement can change who your next of kin is. Taxation
law vis a vis corporations and marriages is quite different.

The author can hardly be blamed for this coincidence; I presume that
_Emergence_ predates the Honor Harrington series.

There was a sequel to Emergence recently serialized in Analog.

Dunno about that, but apparently _Emergence_ was originally a novella

novel, thought it was good, but don't find that world interesting

In the _Emergence_ world the AA's in multiple marriages still have to

problematic for today's gays (not to mention that the "normals"
haven't died off yet).
