Well... I was just perusing over on my AOL account (gasp! heresy.) and I
noticed that there were quite a few authors o'er there. I know of atleast
one author here on the internet and have heard rumors of others. I'm
pretty sure that there are a couple on Genie and probably others in other
places.

So what I was thinking is: Is there a master list of accessible authors?

On AOL, there are:
Raymond Feist
Ru Emerson
Lawrence Watt-Evans
Jospeha Sherman

that I've seen.

J. Michael Straczinsky is on Genie and Gatewayed to the Internet.

According to her acknowledgments, Patricia Kennealy-Morrison is on Genie.

I think Mercades Lackey is out there somewhere (Genie?).

I thought I saw someone o'er is rec.arts.drwho.

Someone said that other authors hang out in the alt.fan groups (Terry
Pratchett? Others?)

Can someone add to my list?

Does a list exist?

PTerry can be found in a.f.p
Katherine Kerr has been seen in r.a.sf.w

I saw a list like this somewhere but I think it was on the generally despised
Jordan threads...now moved away :)

Myself, I'm a closet Jordanite.

There are rather more than "a couple" on GEnie. Several years ago, GEnie
made an offer to SFWA members: any SFWA member who joined GEnie would be
given a 24-hour freeflag on GEnie's Science Fiction Round Table. The idea
was to boost attendance on the SFRT, and it worked; even today, with the
original offer no longer in effect, the SFRT is very much the central online
hangout of the professional SF world. The original freeflags are still
good, and the number of professionals participating is sufficiently high
that latter-day pros are motivated to join and pay GEnie's relatively modest
hourly charges.

Having been one of the original beneficiaries of the freeflag offer, I've
been active on the SFRT for over five years, so no one needs to tell me what
a lame system GEnie is sometimes. But the SFRT is well-run and a lot of
good conversations, fan and pro, can be found there.

"a couple on GEnie"? There are over 150 SFWA members on GEnie. Ray Feist,
Jerry Pournelle, Mercedes Lackey, Judith Tarr, Steven Brust, Daniel
Pinkwater... that's right off the top of my head. Esther Friesner,
Josepha Sherman, Rick Hautala.

Patricia Kennealy-Morrison is on GEnie, but mostly hangs out in the Music
RT, rather than the SF areas.

J. Michael Straczynski is all over GEnie.

On FidoNet, there's Pamela Dean... used to be a bunch of others, but I'm
not sure they're still there. I'm not, though I used to be. (Lost my
local node.)

I don't know of any master list, though.

What Teresa didn't specifically mention is the sheer NUMBER of SF/F pro writers
on GEnie. The number fluctuates, but is well over 200 members.

Yes, I saw that one, but it's out of date. It still lists Cliff
Stoll, for instance, as being in Massachusetts, whereas he's now
back in Berkeley.

(And no, I don't have his e-mail address.)

As PNH says, GEnie is _the_ hangout for SF writers. However, there are also
quite a lot of authors here on Usenet, including right here in
rec.arts.sf.written.

The only reason I could think of there being one is if the SFWA was
organized enough to send e-mail to its members. I don't much about
the SFWA, but I'd be surprised if that was actually true.

I've noticed the following all posting to Usenet, though not necessarily
to this newsgroup:

Diane Duane
Kath Kerr
Crawford Kilian
Geoffrey A. Landis
Vonda N. McIntyre
Joel Rosenberg
Robert J. Sawyer
Sean Stewart
Lawrence Watt-Evans
Elizabeth Willey
Patricia C. Wrede

I also know Internet addresses for Gregory Benford and David Brin
(though I've never tried the latter to see if it works) and the
AoL address for Will Shetterly. As pointed out by other posters, a
lot of SF authors have Genie or AoL addresses, presumably because they
don't have day-jobs which provide them direct to the net connections.

Well, you missed the really big one: Orson Scott Card has his own very
active forum (Keyword: HATRACK). Some of the other SF authors I know on
AOL are Allen Steele, Pat Cadigan, Jack Nimersheim, and Steve Perry.
Also, when OMNI Magazine Online has SF authors in conferences, some of
them chose to keep their AOL accounts. I think Terry Bisson's is still
active.

Cliff is st...@ocf.berkeley.edu.

I saw the referenced book, and was not impressed. (As someone who
gets around the 'net quite a bit, I make some effort to check all
of these sorts of books to make sure that I'm not in them, or at least
that the address given is invalid.)

I think that there are a lot of authors out there who have access to
the 'net, but who either don't have time or don't wish to wade through
all the junk. There's got to be some sort of market out there for a
program which will kiboze a particular group or set of groups so that
this isn't as much of a problem. As it exists, it is much easier for
a fan to spot an article by his/her/its favorite author than for an
author to spot an article about his/her/its work by an interested fan.

(Now let's see if Kibo responds to this article...)

Pat Cadigan and Orson Scott Card also hang out on AOL. A number of authors
cruise rec.arts.sf.written on a regular basis, such as Lawrence Watt-Evans

Geoffrey A. Landis prefers to lurk in rec.arts.sf.science (That's a

Terry Pratchett can be found lurking in alt.fan.pratchett - suprisingly enough.

Katherine Kerr has GENIE mail access to the Net, and has been given some free
hours Internet access through AOL. She tells me she's waiting for her own
personal account at this very moment in time!

OK, OK, DAC, you made the point that there are lots of interesting folks in the
Fidonet "sister" conference to r.a.sf.w. Here's a shortened list of actual
authors who have been active (e.g., more than just a post or two here and
there) at one or more times in the last six months or so. Alphabetically, to
avoid playing favorites:

Steven Brust ... Pat Cadigan ... Pamela Dean (Dyer-Bennet) ... John DeChancie
... John M. Ford ... Michael Kube-McDowell ... Joel Rosenberg ... John Stith
... Bud Webster ... Patricia C. Wrede. You'll see a good taste of the
"Minneapolis Mafia", former Scribblies, and their friends. Half of these
people I hadn't read before I encountered them on-line, and there's not a name
on the list that I wouldn't heartily recommend. (Well, there's a few books
that I wouldn't suggest as somebody's first encounter with an author if I'm
trying to get them hooked ...)

Other folks who used to be seen around, but not much (or at all) recently:

Jack Butler ... A. Scott Archer ... Robin Wayne Bailey ... Diane Duane ...
Raymond Feist ... William Greenleaf ... Gil Lamont ... Barbara Paul ... Will
Shetterly ... Lawrence Watt-Evans ... several of which (hi, Raymond! hi,
Lawrence!) have shown up hereabouts or in other fora after losing their
connections.

And a few others that I know have published stuff, but I haven't read any of
their works.

David: The second book, to be titled ONE QUEST, HOLD THE DRAGONS is
finished and currently on the schedule for release -- sometime in 95, I
believe, though I haven't been told the month.

Yo, Greg. Last I checked, it was scheduled for May. This could still
change.

I can add a few not mentioned yet: David Langford (although better known
for his fan writing, has written _The Space Eater_ & other sf), Ken Appleby
(_The Voice of Cepheus_), Kari Nenonen (a Finnish author, not translated to
English, as far as I know).

Patricia C. Wrede is now pretty active. Joel Rosenberg still has a
presence there. Steven Brust is temporarily disconnected due to my
upgrade to Linux (his point doesn't work any more). Pat Cadigan just
turned up again. John DeChancie continues to be very active. I'm
probably forgetting somebody important, I always do when i do these
lists.

There are also a number over on the Mystery echo (which I also
moderate).

And we miss you.

There are lots and lots of authors on the 'net...

Peter David hangs out in rec.arts.comics, Dave Langford
is in a bunch of groups, Terry hangs out on alt.fan.pratchett,
I thought that Neil Gaiman was once on the 'net (don't know
whether he still is or not...), Lawrence Watt-Evans and Joel
Rosenberg hang out around here...

This was a good way to go trolling for authors, though...

I am not going to bore you with a list of names but there are at
least 20 very well known authors who are not just members, but very active

Pat Cadigan, is very active on Delphi and Genie... I think she has also
been spotted a number of other places in Cyber Space. Like the Well, etc.
That activity (and her books) are what has earned her the title of
"Cyber Goddess"
Oh, gawd, don't tell her I said that...

First a nitpick: It's not "the SFWA," it's just SFWA. Damon Knight, who
named the organization in the first place, gets really cranky about that.
No "the."

Secondly, and more to the point, the SFWA Directory ("the" here modifies
"Directory," not "SFWA") does include a list of members' e-mail addresses.
It's not very complete, and SFWA doesn't do electronic mailings, but the
list does exist.

Living proof that they are here, watching our every move, reading
our every word, errr ... sorry, got carried away.

Now I KNOW I'm going to keep reading this newsgroup! Seriously,
a lot of us are not going to subscribe to a specific service like
Delphi, GEnie, Compuserve, AOL, etc. This newsgroup, being available
to just about everybody, regardless of service provider, is a great
area for the dissemination of ideas and the discussion of various
points of view. Including hearing from authors that we read and
respect.

This contact with the authors, in a public forum (not so intrusive
as e-mail, etc.) is important to enthusiasts such as myself. I began
reading sf when I was about 8 or 9, which I will admit was in the
*very* early 60's :-). I remember reading the Heinleins, Clarkes,
Bradburys and even the earlier rocketship adventure writers of the
40's and 50's. These people influenced me tremendously but they
were figures described only by their writings and whatever I could
get from the author blurb on the back endpage of the dustjacket.

I never got to meet Heinlein, the author who had the most influence
on me. I still hope to meet Clarke or Bradbury, I still have a chance!
I met Fred Pohl just a couple of months ago, it was very educating and
served to provide an actual image to go with the picture I had built
up over the years.

This forum allows us to 'meet' authors without invading their privacy;
it allows up to realize these people are real, they exist, they are not
just names on a dust cover. Keep it up, I hope more authors will grace
us with their presence. Thanks.

BTW Pat, are you appearing at any conventions in the near future? I
would like to hear you speak. And maybe get a book or two signed! :-)
I think your writings are tremendous and I look forward to your next
book.

Now, if only J.G.Ballard were on the net!

Thanks very much for your good words about my work, David. If you're going

Fantasy Convention in New Orleans, or Orycon in Portland, Oregon, please
look me up and say hello.

My British sources tell me that there's very little chance that J.G.
Ballard will be joining us here in cyberspace. Rumor has it--or since this
is information from England, perhaps that should be *rumour* has it--that
Mr. Ballard doesn't even own a computer.

Thanks again!
